View Full Version : WDE 8th March: Red Danube

Red anyway, the Danube is somewhere nearby. The new bride leaves with that nice Count Vlad from up on the hill.
I may have cheated a bit by bringing in two refs of my own, the well known portrait of the original Vlad and a photo of a Roumanian doll.
Oil on paper glued to cardboard 12 x 16 inches. Started off as a pen and ink sketch which I was going to watercolour. I decided I'd get more intense reds with oils. About three hours in total.

Very nice use of the red and green. I can see this as a wonderful storybook illustration.

Yes, agree. I can see people are going to have a lot of fun this week at ol' Vlad's expense. Love the red underpainting Harry. Very effective and fun.
wow, this definitely takes the challenge to another level!!! I just love everything about this creative painting! The strange thing about this painting is that although it might give the feeling of fun and hilarious, it has so much "Romanian" character. Little bits like the crowd in the background, the green mountain, architectural bits, the horse (which are still used as a transportation mean in the villages), all mixed together give me the "home" feeling! Thank you so much for joining the challenge!

Old Vlad would be feeling right at home in this clever scene. Red is certainly his colour. What a great answer to the challenge.
