Seven Moleskines and counting. What can I say? I just can't get enough of them. :D

My medium for this watercolor 8.25 x 5.25 moleskine sketchbook is gouache. I picked gouache for it's oil paint like properties I'd heard of but I think I'm using it more like watercolor. I'm just starting out and hoping to learn a lot! I'd have to say this Art Journal Forum is my favorite on the site.

These first two were copied from alansam's wonderful sketches. I so love his style.

Perspective is a bit off on this one. Must not have had the camera straight. I like my building and the right tree trunk, the rest needs a lot of help. If you don't screw up you never learn, right?

Besides the big green blob in the lower left, I'm pretty stoked about this one. I've found that copying alansam's paintings is a lot easier than doing my own.

This next one I did from a photo I took ages ago in Grand Teton National Park of a one standing charred tree trunk. It was tough to simplify and I think I could have done even more. I see a few things I wish I would have done different. The sky.. too uniform. I also think I could have done without the mountains. I'll probably do some more work to it. The charred tree needs some depth and needs grounded. The bushes could use some trunks and branches.

Any critique on any of these is more than welcome!

Thanks for the kind responses. These next ones are actually older but I just got around to getting them in a digital format.

This first one is the day I got my sketchbook. I was so excited!

This one was done the day I found out I was going to be a new aunt.

Here is the latest sketch. I did this one while sitting in the driveway in a lawn chair, sipping a vodka tonic, soaking in our first Springy weekend.

Welcome to the forum! Nice job on the sketches - I like gouache for sketching as well, but having done watercolor first, it does sometimes tend to get used thinly, as watercolor washes would be done.

Nice sketches. Like the last one. The advantage of gouache however you use it is you can paint over and keep adding paint to get the depth of color you want. Changes are easy also:)

Thanks for the positive comments!

One thing I tried to do in that last one was lift out some rock shapes and nothing was lifting. I thought gouache was praised (or damned) for it's lifting abilities. Perhaps it's the paper or maybe it didn't have enough paint on the paper to lift? Anyway, the rocks didn't make it in the sketch.

Nice landscape!!! You seem to know how to sit down and paint...did you do what I often do and put your brush in the drink? lol

Thanks, Joan. And yes, the brush went into the drink a few times. hahaha!

Did this one a week ago while sitting next to String Lake in Grand Teton National Park. A nice way to spend my birthday.
