I came across some catalogues (catalogs in American English!) on eBay today and wondered if some of them were viewable online. I checked Christie's website and they do have a page where you can access the current catalogs.

Christie's Online Catalogues (https://www.christies.com/services/publications/browse-ecatalogues.aspx)

If you specifically want to look at watercolor paintings, type in "watercolour" (be sure to add the u) and it will give you an index.

Most of the paintings are late 1800s and early 1900s, and almost all contained bodycolor (watercolor with white gouache).

It's fun to look through the different styles and compositions from that time period. Usually you only see artists like Sargent, Homer or Wyeth.

Thanks Jan. Not sure whether it is available in the US but there is a massive database of UK painting collections on the BBC Your Paintings site (http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/)..

What a great site! Too bad they excluded watercolors. Maybe they'll add them later.

We have something similar from the Smithsonian:
American Art (http://americanart.si.edu/)

If you do a search for watercolor, over 2000 paintings are inventoried but it's just their own collection. Google Art Project has a lot of art from museums across the US (and the world).
