View Full Version : Purple cat - Erengi experiment
02-23-2013, 07:07 PM
I recently purchased a set of Erengi Art Aspirer oil pastels. I thought I'd share a painting I've started mostly with the blues and purples.
I'm posting pictures of the WIP and the model.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/23-Feb-2013/1118562-image.jpeg
And Theo, whose name I've borrowed for my wetcanvas name :)

How fun to paint your kitty in purples! The tones are coming out well. Nice beginning.

Very nice painting, I like your cat's pose - being lazy. Painting is looking good w/your range of values.
Looking forward to seeing your final painting. How do you like the Erengi's?

What a fun painting and I like your choice of color. Yes, what do you think of the Erengis?

I think that the Erengis are harder than the other sticks I've tried. I also had a piece crumble off when i was using it - never experienced that before. I bought these less expensive sets to experiment with. At first I was totally turned off by these but I was trying them on artist trading cards which wasn't fair- I've never tried something so small!! I think I will enjoy using them. However the more I use these inexpensive sticks the more I appreciate the Holbeins for the richness of pigment and creaminess. So I am planning now on expanding my palette of Holbeins.
I don't know when I will get over my fear of using my higher quality pastels. I guess I should just make a resolution to try another cat using them!!
Here is an update to the WIP. I was planning on having a background in the lower half as he's laying on a blanket. Any advice on backgrounds would be appreciated as right now it detracts for me.

One other comment about the Erengis - I could get the majority of the pigment off with kneaded rubber. This is my second attempt at adding blanket colors in the lower left corner.

I think the color is fine, a complement to the cat, but I think it has too much chroma and needs to be greyer.

Okay, sounds good. I will think about how to implement that . I might need more advice!!

I use the Erengis on location sometimes and like them.
I agree about the purple being so saturated...you might try a turquoise to soften the color somewhat...a light value.
Are you using MiTientes? I see a pattern in the substrate that makes me think that's what you're working on.

Yes I'm using Mi Tientes paper.

Playing with the background. :). Sorry for the bad lighting and low resolution!
