View Full Version : Sailing by the Needles (Versions 1 and 2)

Hello again. These are the distinctive chalk "Needles" at the western entrance to the Solent - the stretch of water separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight (on left).
I painted two versions. In the first I used masking fluid on the sea so I could easily whip a wash of blues and greens across but I didn't like the result which looked too "photographic" to me. So in Version 2 I dispensed with masking fluid and painted the sea with more obvious waves and I think it looks better and more "painterly". Also darkened the sky to show the Needles to more effect.
A few rain trails from the sky and it looks as if a squall is coming in. So the yachtsmen need to head for Yarmouth harbour....pronto!
The paintings are 14x11 in. on Bockingford paper. All crits welcome.

Hi Mike

The sea in your second version is far more convincing to me and just beautifully painted - colours are better too. (I'd chuck the masking fluid!!)

Love the drama in the sky.

'Painterly' is a very apt description of this work. It's a beauty!

I agree - 2nd is much more interesting. Arnie

I agree Mike! They are both lovely but the 2nd one has your trademark freedom that is somewhat missing in the first. You are such a talented water colorist. I love your work. Cheers =)) Debs.

Hi Round, Arnie and Debzy. Thank you for your kind comments. I wasn't at all happy with version 1 but didn't realise how ordinary it was until I had painted version 2.

Round - I agree about the masking fluid - don't like the stuff. I will not use
it again for seas. The only time I think it is useful is when I am
painting a harbour scene with a myriad of masts sticking up into
the sky. Then you can concentrate on the sky wash and know that
your masts will be left white to be painted whatever colour you

Debzy - Good to see you "up and running" again. Hope you now feel fully fit.
You are always more than generous in your comments. From what I
have seen of your watercolours over the past few months, you
should give YOURSELF a pat on the back!
