This is a view of a very small barrier reef island in Belize where I had the pleasure to "work" for the equivalent of about two months, spread out over several years. Just thinking about it warms me up in this cold NY February. I did some island details last night, but now that I look at it, I will have to tweak the palm trees a bit. The things that remain to be done is to try to develop more mass in the clouds, even-out the sky shading, and add light and life to the water. Each image represents work for an hour or so on four nights. I'm using Senns on 8.6"x11.5" Strathmore Bristol vellum. Oil pencils helped with the hoizon line and a few island details. C&C welcome. Thanks for looking.

Way to go Ed! I love what I'm seeing already, as you know I would. Looking forward to seeing the finished painting. Love the deep blues for the water, the little island and large fluffy clouds - this is going to be awesome!

I think its more than a painting, its kind of a portal, or a gateway to an escape. So lovely of you to share this vista with us - thanks!

Thank you for your comments and interest Lara, Mary, Roy, Helen, Sammy, Pat, Carly, Graham, and Michelle. This painting has been fun to do and I think it's pretty much finished. I'll call it "Carrie Bow", the name of the Cay. Given the weather outside today, it looks more like a fantasy painting then my attempt at reality.

Wow, beautiful, and the sky is so great looking. I just started OP and I so far failed to be able to do smooth sky with clouds ( it always looks chunky as if clouds are painted on top). Is there any special sequence how you lay pastels and blend them? How many layers did you put onto the sky and which colours went first?
Thanks!

Thanks for the comments on the finished painting Pat, Michelle, Mary, Rainy, Rudra and OS2013. The structures on the island are old wooden building which served as a research laboratory for the Smithsonian. Sadly, they burned down several years ago and were replaced with less interesting and more modern facilities.

I'm not sure I can give a better explanation of the development of the sky then the steps I already posted. I blocked out the position of the clouds, painted a gradient sky and then used white as the first approximation of the clouds. Blending with my finger worked well for the blues (three of four colors plus white). After that it was a matter of adding darks (greys and purple) to add volume to the clouds and then white/yellow/pink highlights. Unfortunately the digital reproduction does not do justice to the subtle colors on the original. Hope this helps. Ed
