View Full Version : My own iPad foray using "Paper by 53"

I had sworn a few years back that I would never consider digital art "true" art. I had seen a piece on display, though it was very appealing to the eye, my trained eye recognized the digital strokes. The gentleman carried his iPad with him and he was continuously demonstrating his art, much to everyone's amusement.

I grumbled as my piece sat two spaces over, with no fanfare. At least mine was "true" art! Constructed with my hands, with no "undo" and the stains still showing under my fingernails. I would never be such a hack!

Fast forward to today. Working full time, mother of a 2 1/2 yo, trying to squeeze in time for the gym and dinner. All of a sudden that hour before I go to bed with the lights out and under the covers became a new ideal time for doodling.

I had never journaled much before... I'm not very consistent at anything due to the limitations of time, but this has allowed me some more opportunities where I would never have been creating before. So here I am, hack and all!

I thought I would share some of my digital creations continuously here as I create them. I have a few I have already done to start, but would encourage anyone to share in their explorations in digital.

To ponder this question...are any of them worth printing and framing?

Hello. . . cool. I'm eager to see. Welcome!!!

I started using Paper last week and am having such fun with it. Are you on Tumblr? I am following someone name shippeeshots. Is that yours? I'm new to Tumblr and paper but having a great time and set up a page there few days ago.

Wow, now I can see the bird but when I posted the last post, could not. Stange how wetcanvas works sometimes. Anyway, I would have recognized that. Awesome. Love that one! The colors are just beautiful.

Cheeky little bird. Thanks for sharing.

Here was my first attempt getting down and dirty and really figuring out how far I could take it. Even could go further but I am notorious for doing "good enough"...

This is my true first. I of course just looked up from the couch and drew what was in front of me. This was just learning how the tools worked, the watercolor texture and layering. A nice quick first test of the Paper app.

These are really good Jess. Welcome btw :) I have been playing with my iPad for sketching too, but am following the "quick and good enough" approach. I really like your couch but that bird is a winner for me. I look forward to seeing more.

One of my fav. The luminosity is one thing I love about digital.

Wow, you are really great with Paper. It's my favorite drawing app, too. What stylus do you use?

I'm at the point where you were previously - wanting to stick with 'traditional' art, though I understand the attraction of digital. I've even been leery of following the digital journal threads here for fear of getting sucked into yet another 'medium' :( :wink2: . But I've decided to follow along anyway and test my fortitude in avoiding the temptation. I don't want digital art to become like art supplies, which have definitely progressed to the addiction phase. Oh, yes, great work here as well! I'm a bird nerd, so I love the side view of the Barn Owl, and the small bird by the window.

My stylus is just a generic non name special. Rocket fish, I think. Would love to get my hands on a pressure sensitive one as there is support for them.

Thank you all for your kind words. Have another to upload after work.

My tumblr is under shippeeshots, for those wanting to know!

If you are uploading from the iPad you can only do one per day or it overwrites your first image :( done that twice!

These are very good and I obviously need to revisit paper. If the owl prints well, then yes, certainly frame it. I'll follow with interest. I have to look at Tumblr.

I do like the virtual sketchbooks.

More wonderful work. Go for it. Printing out the owl and framing it.

I have found a way to circumvent the one per day issue. I have the Photobucket app on my iPad. I have it autoupload every night when I plug in the tablet (or when I do a force push). All photos ever are backed up.

In Paper, where you can share, there is an option to put it in your iPad albums. I push it to there, upload to Photobucket, save to my Art Portfolio folder on Photobucket then copy the IMG link and use it to be an offsite provider. I paste the IMG link directly in the post (don't even need the uploader). As long as I don't move the photo from it's original link, I can upload and share multiple photos.

Some forums don't like you to do that but I'm not sure about this one. I have a photo bucket account too. If they don't object I will do that. Can't remember which one got ratty about it now.

Tumblr is very fun. . . I set up an account last week and have been posting my newest items there rather than on wetcanvas. I am following Jess there! If you set one up Viv, please let me know so I can follow you! Mine is http://seawindart.tumblr.com if you want to follow me also.

IMHO, you really need to buy the in-app parts of Paper to get the full use of that program. With the free version, which is pen only, its fun but not nearly what it CAN be. :)

That is very true, Rainy. The Tumblr app also lets you sort all posts that are creations by Paper so you can see how people are using it all over. Some stuff is just amazing! I think it is all tagged #paperbyfiftythree and #madewithpaper

Also, the in-app purchases are neglible... it was like 4.99 to unleash the rest of the tools, then you can purchase the mixer later, but that is it... no other purchases... I do like that you are a little limited to you can just bury yourself in the creative process. Your muscle memory works you through it rather than looking in menus for tools, brushes, etc.

Another doodle one night from a magazine ad in a photography magazine of mine... I do love how the handwriting seems nicer than my real handwriting with use of the calligraphy pen tool.

I don't believe they object, as a matter of fact, Yorky, who is one of the main site Admins had posted this about this exact subject:

http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1225822

If he is telling us how, I imagine it is ok. I believe they are worried about the broken links but he references that possibility as well.

I agree about having less options. . . in fact, that was what I blogged about last week! I also quite like having it all on one layer as well.

Yes, we do ask people not to use off site hosted pictures. They disappear when the site is moved which happens every couple of years. I understand the ipad problem, lets hpoe the next ios update willinclude filenames.
