Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=521)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hey Sassy, I signed up for this, but I am not familiar with how this goes, since I've never done a card project before. Do we just post them here or do we actually mail them out to someone here (I think I've seen where on some card projects they do that, right?)

Hi all, I signed up as well. But like Sharon, I haven't participated in this kind of project before, so don't understand the mechanics for how this works.

Have a great day!

I always "intend" to make a Christmas card ... perhaps this is the year to actually do it !! I would like to join. Sounds neat! But I am curious too about the rules. Do we create a different card for everyone? Or can we make copies?

How pretty Joyce:) It has such a wonderful winter feel to it. I love the way that you have put the wreath around the door of the bird house:D I would never have thought of that. Your birds appear to be on the lookout for the great gift giver. Ummmmmmm I wonder what they are wishing for. Maybe a nice juicy worm, or a sprinkling of seeds? Great job, gal:)

I need all participants to give me their names and addresses so that I can get the list going for the exchange. Please type out exactly how your address is written if you live outside the states. I always mess that up.....lol Send the message via pm with the heading Holiday Card Exchange.

sassybird
09-06-2003, 01:33 PM
Make your cards, and then post them in the project. This is a bit different from the way the postcard exchange goes. Don't say who the card is for though. When a particpant receives their card in the mail they can post to let us know which one they received. That is why I need everyones name and address, we do mail them out. I have given everyone 3 months to do the cards so that they can be mailed out by the beginning of Dec, in time for most holidays for folks. This is why I started the project so early. It will give people time to get their cards done before the holidays set in, and everyone gets busy:)

Sassy, thanks for explaining how this works:) A PM is on its way to you with my address.

sassybird

I got it, Cindy. When everyone has given me their address I will send out the list to everyone participating. You can mail them out at your leisure, or wait unitl the beginning of December.

Some may want to spread them out due to the higher cost of postage, and that is fine. We can just begin the holidays early with little gifts of art along the way:) The 90 day grace period was for everyone to prepare and get their work posted.

Hey Chrissa. I'm still a little confused. When you send out the list do we each send a card to everyone on the list or do you pick out someone for us to send it to randomly or do we pick out someone ourselves? If we pick someone out ourselves, how do we know we won't all send to the same person (or couple of people) and them some people won't get one.

Hi Sharon,

Each person will send out 19 cards - one fort everyone else on the list. ( 20 if you want to send one to yourself. LOL )

That's why Sassy gave us 3 months to complete the project. Just wait til you start receiving them ! It really is like Christmas. I love these exchange projects !

Hi lisilk. Another stupid question...LOL.. Do we make 19 of the same one (originals or copies?), or 19 different cards? (I had better get really busy either way) LOL

lisilk
09-07-2003, 10:37 PM
Sharon

It's not a stupid question if you don't know the answer ! In most exchange projects, you send all original pieces. ( Thus the 3 months and limited members.) Looking forward to seeing ( and receiving  ) your work Sharon.

I don't know if Charissa ( Sassybird ) set a rule for that or not. Sassy ? Originals or copies ?

Cheers,

Li

All cards are to be original, and mailed out to each participant on the list.

Speaking of mailing. I need everyone to get their addresses to me, so that I can pass them on to the rest of the members. You won't get any cards if I don't have your addresses......lol

I noticed with the postcard project that some members were not aware of the discussion thread, even near the end so you might need to nudge a few with p.m.'s

Can't wait to get started !

Man was I misunderstanding!

I thought it was a card sent to one person, and that it would be a copy. I started me idea on a 8 x 10 size!!

So it is one card to each person, original work (so obviously it is not extremely detailed) .

But is it 19 different designs?

Whether they are different or the same, because it is 19 originals, I will be drawing my fingers to the bone!

Please clarify.

sassybird

Come on folks, let's get this project on the road. I know that many of you can crank out one card a day:D

You may not be familar with the postcard exchange projects. One differnt card for each person on the list. They can be as simple or detailed as you would like them to be. My works will be simple this time around due to time constraints. You can also work in any medium or style that you want to. Maybe use just swatches of color to represent what makes you feel good about your holiday season. You can do it, I know you can:) If it is more than your time permits then you can drop out of the project with not problem. No harm in that. I have done it several times myself when something came up:)

Oh! Put that 8x10 paper away. You can work as small as you like to. I am doing minatures for this project.

Sassy,

Best of luck with your show. Is it in Idaho ? I would love to see etchings on satin. Have you posted them in the printmaking forum ?

To the group,

If there is anyone who celebrates a holiday other than Christmas, such as Hannaka ( yikes, I can't remember the spelling- SORRY,) or Kwanza, etc. Can you p.m. me ? I would be happy to gear your card to your beliefs.

Cheers,

Li

Hi All, Does anyone use actual blank cards like the ones Strathmore puts out or is it just a more like a postcard with the artwork on one side and greetings on the back?

jjsangel
09-14-2003, 10:49 PM
I use the blank cards like Strathmore puts out or just fold my paper and make my own depending on the size I want and whether I actually have any premade on hand.

I'm posting my first card over in the project forum, but from now on they will have to be a little simpler than this one to do that many......lol

Ok, here's the scoop. When putting restrictions on this project I did not take into account all the fall shows that people would be involved in. So......................................... everyone get to work.

I'm leaving the deadline open ended.

I found myself short of time also, but I am going to get all my pieces done by the end of the year. Hopefully all you busy people will feel better without a deadline to meet:)

Is anyone else working on this project????

I've added my second card to the list and am working on my third. Is anyone else drawing out there.

Please let me know if we are still working on this. If no one is going to make all 19 cards there is no need for me to keep going. Well, I will make them anyway, I'll just use them for family...lol

Thank you very much Cindy. I just hope I can come up with 16 more.......

Hi Lydia. It was my understanding to post them all, unless I misunderstood. You will have seen them, but you won't know which one you will get.

Thanks Carolyn. Don't be scared.... You can DO it!!! I just work on them a little at a time. When I come up with an idea, (at work, when I go to bed, whenever) I sketch it out so I won't forget it, and then I can have them on hand so when I get time I work on it on the card. Friday, I took the "holly" one to work and worked on it for a while at lunch and finished it when I got home. Yea, it really sounds a lot easier than it is though....LOL

chatfieldstudios
09-20-2003, 06:54 PM
Or you can do like I am doing, Carolyn....I have a tole-painting book that I had from the '90's and the copyright allows me to use them for selling at a craft show or bazaar. Since these are gifts and I won't be selling them I feel comfortable using the designs without infringing on someone's copyright. Then I don't have to come up with all 19 original designs. I have a few that will be original at this point...but I might feel alot of pressure to come up with 19 ideas (along with my regular work).

lyd
09-20-2003, 07:36 PM
cindy, I'm glad you mentioned that, cause I was wondering about your designs. I had seen other names attributed to them and was confused.

chatfieldstudios
09-20-2003, 08:44 PM
Yes, Lyd...If you go to the project posting itself, I have given credit to the artist and publisher. They are line drawings that I then transfer to watercolor paper to paint with watercolor and pen/ink.

I try to be very vigilant in NOT infringing on anyone's copyright.

jjsangel
09-21-2003, 12:34 AM
Hi everyone. Well, I finished #4 and got it posted.

Wow, it's going to be hard to think up that many different ideas. I think the book idea is a good one as long as they give you permission to use them to sell. (even though we aren't selling these). I think I'll go thru some of my old painting books and see what's there. I won't use the exact image but it may trigger some ideas for something in my head.

Well, on to the next one.

Yep, but they won't know which one is theirs:D Just a little tease for everyone.......lol I had that idea when I set a deadline, but since I have changed that to open ended due to time contraints for a lot of folks you can either show it now, or wait until you hear from the receipent. I figure a lot of people will be offline more during the holidays with parties, travel, and family around, so may not pm the person that send them a card so that they can post it.

Hey Sassy. Thank you for all your wonderful comments on my cards. Yes they are all cp and ink with a little pastel chalk thrown in for the backgrounds in some. Sorry to hear about your mom's ornaments. They would have been a wonderful memory. I would hate to be allergic to evergreens. They smell so wonderful. Well off to create some more..

Hey Sarah, Naked fairies in holly...lol That will be too cute... Can't wait to see them..

Thanks Sarah, Glad you like it. The background is done with those little plastic pots of pastel chalks that rubber stampers use. After I inked in the outlines, I just took a kleenex and rubbed on some colors and then I wadded up a piece and kindof dabbed it on for some texture and then sprayed it with fixitive. I also used these chalks on the background of the rest (except the holly) I just didn't add the texture part. I LOVE those chalks for backgrounds. I don't know why I didn't remember I had them before now and try it earlier...

Thank you and Yes I love to (do) draw animals. I only wish that I could paint as well as the rest of the group. In high school I painted some but drawing remained my true passion. The owl is pen and ink on graphite and the other is graphite. They are on a 5"x5" card which will require extra postage (I hope that is okay).

It's a watercolor Li. But it's from a photo I took last winter at my feeder :D
I struggle every year with deciding on subjects for Christmas cards! Probably why I've never designed my own before! I really feel Christmas is about Christ ... and I'm so tired of the normal Nativity scenes! I'm searching for the "right" thought and picture to depict my best message for Christmas! How about the rest of you? Is it a struggle too?

Avie
09-29-2003, 10:06 PM
I am struggling too Carolyn!!! That is kinda why I have put it off this long... 20 is a lot of ideas! Some of the ideas that I had I just could't get them right so I gave them up.

I agree Carolyn. It's hard to come up with just the right idea. I'm just doing some generic designs that have come to my mind. 20 cards is a lot of different ideas to come up with so I'm just trying to wrack my brain and come up with anything Holiday looking. Generally when I make my Christmas cards I use colored papers and some rubber stamps along with my drawings to make it quicker but for here I'm just drawing them all. I haven't come up with the right thought to portray "Christ"mas either.

After I got this one put in the project I went back and gave it more dark high lights for more depth. Mine all look so much better in reality than on the computer!!!!

You can all wag your fingers at me since I put a time limit on the project, forgetting that I had commitments to. So the sass is scatterbrained too:D I won't deny that...lol

I have been busy with my upcoming show, but I have looked at every piece posted. Everyone is doing such a great job! I will have time to post my own submissions after the 16th.

Hey everyone, got to make this fast, my computer is giving me fits and cuts me off about as soon as I get on.

Avie I love your deer, very nice. My poinsetta took me about a day and a half. Lot of work on that one.

Thanks Li, Marilyn, and Chatfield . Glad you all like it. That one took a lot of layering.

Hey Sassy. Looking forward to seeing your pictures.. Good luck on the show.

Hey Li. Glad you like the Santa. It was a weird idea that came to me after seeing a shirt on a girl with masks on it. One of them was made kinda like the one Santa has on. I sat in the restaurant and sketched it out. Who knew. Ideas come from the strangest places.....lol............Love those colored pencils!!!

You really do a great job with the colored pencils! And your constant being open to ideas ...even in a restaurant! LOL! is so neat to consider! I have always looked at nature with an eye to see things I find interesting to paint but don't always think about that out in public. Guess I need to keep my mind open to ideas more! Thanks for sharing that!

Hey Carolyn. Glad to inspire you...lol

Thanks Marilyn. It's funny what will trigger an idea. Sometimes something totaly unrelated to what you are trying to come up with. Who knew a t-shirt with masks on it would give me the idea for a santa....lol Kinda weird huh...:D

Thank you, thank you:D I just LOVE Christmas! I got lucky with that little tree, or maybe it was just Christmas MAGIC;) Seriously though, I tried to remember that nature is not perfect, hence my trees' shape isn't perfect, and the needles were made using a Pigma Micron .005 pen that got a teeny-bit damaged by using it too roughly on watercolor paper. The tip's pushed in, and rather than throwing it away, I've found it's perfect for making nice, light little strokes. Great for scribbling tiny pine needles, don't you think?

I had a look at the Xmas card project, and they plan sending out on November 26th or overseas / Early december for neighbouring countries. Is the planning the same in here? By the way, we are only 19, so 18 cards are needed so far!

As all of you have probably noticed I have not been participating in the project so far. I apolgize for that. There have been some unforeseen personal matters that developed, so I have not been online that much, and have not felt up to completing the projects I am involved in.

I am not going to drop out of this project, but I am not going to be able to complete different cards for everyone. I am, however, going to be doing a fine art print that I can send to everyone on the list. I have not included my address on the list, because I do not feel it is fair to receive work when I have not been able to follow the project as everyone else has.

By now most of you have received the address for all that have sent them to me, and those that have not sent their address I have pm'd.

I have been browsing the project when I have the oppurtunity, and I have to say that everyone is doing some great creative work:) I appreciate the involvement in this project, and once again apologize for my abscense.

Your work is beautiful Marilyn ! Hard to pick a favorite !

**** We've a had a rough couple of weeks. I haven't gotten much done but am back on track.

I also sort of went off on a folk- art wooden ornaments rampage. Would anyone object to getting an ornament from me instead of a card ? I will scan some of the critters when they are dry ( another hour or so ? )

Let me know once you see them.

Cheers.

Hi Everyone. As I said above, I have been on some psycho folk- art ornament making tangent.

Would it be kosher if I send ornaments instead of cards ? If that's not okay, or if you prefer a card let me know. I have NOT put these in the project gallery because I wasn't sure if it would be okay.

Cards? Nyah... I figure the ornaments are - - - um... 'ornamental' enough. I was just going to stick them on the front of a plain piece of cardstock with the thought that the ornaments are decorative enough for a card, right? Add a simple greeting and a signature, and WHA-LA! You're done!

Works for me anyway.:D

Oh Charissa, I'm so sorry to hear you're going through a rough time! I hope things improve for you soon. As far as not including your address on the list, I understand you're not wanting to do that because of the way the rules were set up, but I for one would like to request your address, as I have a special card I'm working on just for you, and I'd like you to get it.

In my personal opinion, I wouldn't mind making an exception to the rules for you. I've been in some tough situations myself, and seeing as you went to all the trouble, not to mention the work involved in setting this exchange project up, it doesn't seem quite fair NOT to make an exception in your case. But as I said, that's just my opinion, and I can't speak for everyone here. I will be thrilled to recieve a work of art from you, and it doesn't bother me one bit that 18 other people will get the same card. To me, it will be an 'ORIGINAL WORK OF ART', just like YOU!

Please, pm it if you will, but please let me have your address so I can send your card to you.

I'll keep thinking healing thoughts and sending them your way!

Here is my 2 cents! Sassy ... please include your address! I would like to send you a card too. My problems aren't as time consuming this year .... but they are problems just the same! I know we all experience those set-backs and some just opt to drop out unannounced. I'm glad you are hanging in there and being honest! That honesty is so freeing! To me as well, as I have struggled with creating cards since the beginning when I misunderstood and thought we could do one card and print them! I am glad to hear others are opting to doing their "thing" with ornaments, etc! This whole project is shaping up to something do-able for me!!
I will be praying for you and whatever is hard in your life just now.
