View Full Version : My very first mixed media journal page

I have wanted to try doing a mixed media journal for a while. I have several books and have seen some really neat journals. I thought this quote was appropriate for my first page. I used white Gesso to cover the entire page, then let it dry. Then I did the yellow, orange, and red watercolors and let them dry. Then I added the quote in a red Crayola marker (I haven't invested yet in any really good markers since I don't use markers very much). Hope you like it. :)

Thank you RainySea! A compliment from you makes my day! I have one of your visual journal posts marked as one of my favorites! Your art is awesome!

Lovely page, love that quote. The colouring is awesome. I've never tried watercolour over gesso, must give it a go.

Thanks all!
Jacqui, I had never tried watercolor over Gesso either but I read about it somewhere (sorry can't remember the source or maybe I watched a youTube video, who knows) and it seems to work pretty well. It lets you create a little bit more texture on the page and seems to make it less likely for bleedthrough.

So, I didn't read the guidelines for posting here before my first post. Anyway, the sketchbook I am using is a Canson XL Series for Mixed Media, 98 lb paper, 7" x 10". Here are the next two pages that I did. I always liked cutting things out of magazines as a child, so I cut out letters from magazines. Again, I used a white gesso background, let it dry, then painted watercolor over it and let it dry. Then I glued the letters on and wrote a phrase beneath each word. Then I used a round cork and dipped in watercolors to make the surrounding circles.

A very inventive use of materials!! Nicely done, looks like bubbles and I like the alternating collage and then lettered text.

A nice journal, Leeann.
Very inspiring sayings.

Love your quote, very nice page. Cool idea using the cork for the circles, I was wondering what you had used.

Delightful pages. The cork as stamp did indeed make it look like bubbles. Fun.

Thanks! Yes, I thought the cork turned out pretty good. At first, I was not pleased because it was a synthetic cork so the full circle didn't show up, just the edges. But the more I did it, the more it looked like bubbles and I liked how it turned out.

Here was the page from a couple of nights ago. I struggled to come up with anything. My husband was watching the news and the background "noise" was very distracting. So, this is my internal random thoughts and discussion with myself. Not sure it's art worth sharing but figured I'd share anyway. Anybody else have nights like that?

That is why I have an agreement with my hubby that when I'm doing something that I have to concentrate on, I let him know. He doesn't watch TV or pull up videos on the computer during that time. But, I give him the same courtesy when he needs the quiet. I feel your frustration.

Debby, that's a great idea. I usually try to get my art done before he turns the TV on. Just didn't work the other night.... :-)

Nice group of pages. Your lettering is really nice. I like the look the gesso gives to the page.
