View Full Version : My first art journal

MartinaL

I love painting landscapes in pastel and watercolour, but I need much more practice in drawing other things.
My husband gave me some Stillman and Birn Sketchbooks for Christmas and I started my first Art Journal.
I will try to draw a lot of things from my live, even if they turn out not very well, maybe this will help improving my drawing and painting skills.

Showing you some journal pages maybe will help me keep going.
Advice, comments and critic is always welcome

I use a Stillman & Birn Alpha Sketchbook, Pigma Microns, Windsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor and some Derwent Inktense Pencils.

Hello Martina,

Those are great pages. . . I love your layouts. I need to work more on that aspect of my own journals as I tend to just draw and plop a word or two! Yours are pulled together so nicely. Love the page with the doggie prints and the one with the rainy window.

BTW, what size is your Alpha book?

Hi Rainy Sea, I believe Martina is using an A4 (8.25" x 11.75") size which we manufacture primarily for export. There are a few U.S. outlets that do carry this size.

MartinaL

Thank you all for your nice comments :)

RainySea: my Alpha Sketchbook is 5 x 8 in.
friesin: You should really try thermo glasses, they are perfect!
sketchbookbinder: I love my Alpha Sketchbook! unfortunately it is very difficult to find a dealer in germany where you can buy the S&B Sketchbooks

So here is my next journal entry:

No, this is not chicken soup :wink2: It is potato soup with lentils. The hen is one of our four hens, her name is "Bommel" and she is really cute with her face-feathers. I found the first egg since autumn this morning, but it is not as crooked as the one I have painted :wink2:

Martina that chicken is just too cute, love her. Oh my look at all that chocolate. How could you wait to sketch them all before eating. I would sketch one eat it, move onto the next. I love chocolate.... lol Your coffee cup is good you just need to match the top curve with the bottom. The bottom is a bit straight, very nice shading on it.

Thank you Michelle, Debby, Margo and Jacqui :)

After days with grey clouds, we hat little bit blue sky yesterday and snowfall in the evening.
I was so excited and started to do three little sky paintings.
They turned out awful and I wiped them away with a towel while they were wet and tried to paint new. I really tortured my Alpha Sketchbook!
The paintings are still terrible. I love painting clouds in pastel, but I have to learn how to do in watercolors, it is so difficult!

Maybe I should not show this ugly page, but so we all have something to laugh about
Now I will turn over to the next blank page and do something new...

Today was a beautiful day, sun and snow and wonderful colors in the evening sky. I had to paint it!
On the top left side I tried to paint a snow covered tree branch. I didn't like it. So I painted another evening sky on Fabriano watercolor paper, cut it out and pasted it over the failed branch.

Hello Yako!

My favorite books about Art Journals/Sketching are:

- The Art of Urban Sketching, Gabriel Campanario
- Artists Journal Workshop, Cathy Johnson
- An Illustrated Life, Creative License, Everyday matters, Danny Gregory
- Keeping a nature journal, Clare Walker Leslie
and two German books:
- Mut zum Skizzenbuch, Wasserfarben fur Gestalter, Felix Scheinberger

I have a lot more books about art journaling, but these are my favorites.

Today I decided to draw my watercolor palette.

I know, the perspective is not correct.

Weeks ago I would never have shown my drawing mistakes, but since I have my art journal, I have learned that is has not to be perfect.
I take it easy and I am not frustrated about my "mistakes". Maybe my next palette drawing will be correct, who knows ;)

Michelle, John, Jacqui, Debby and Joan: thanks a lot :)

I think I will sketch a lot during our vacation :)
Yesterday I made a quick sketch of some grapes:

Thank you all

Today the sun is shining, but it is cold.
While driving home from the grocery, I stopped the car and made a photo with my cellphone camera, because I forgot my sketchbook. At home I sketched from the photo. The fields are green, but still covered with a thin layer of snow.

So what have tulips and a gray heron in common? Both have pleased me yesterday: I got the tulips for valentine and the gray heron was sitting on a field near my house. I had to sketch both :wink2:

Wonderful pages Martina. Aren't those herons a blast to sketch, there were a pair that frequented a swimming pool at the house across the street from me and used to perch in the life oak over my deck. Always fun to sketch. I like your landscapes quite a bit too.

I live near a small airport and I like to walk my dogs in the fields opposite and watch the small planes take off or land. Sometimes there are parachutist.
In April the airport will be closed, because a few kilometers away a new, much modern and bigger airport is built.
I sketched the "old" airport very quickly, because it was cold and my dogs were impatient. They are are not the best sketching companions

Thank you Jennifer, Joan, Debby and John!

Yes, my dogs are impatient sketching companions and so are my two kids (sometimes). We visited an old monastery which is now a farm. I had not much time for my sketch, because our kids wanted to walk around (understandable, because there is so much to see and explore). This is the reason my sketch is not finished.
(like always I had problems with the perspective. If anyone of you knows a good book about architecture sketching, let me know  )

This is a quick sketch of the "Sababurg" castle, it is a 30 minute drive away from our home and it lies in the middle of a wonderful, large forest with lots of old oaks.

This is my yesterday entry:
A feeder for roe deer in a forest near my home. I sketched quickly in Pen and added watercolor at home, because it was cold and my dogs wanted to continue the walk.
First time the perspective was not a desaster for me (but I failed with the background trees  )

These are all so wonderful!! I love the deer feeder-it turned out beautifully, and look, the perspective is just right! :)

Here are the names of a couple of perspective books I have that you might like: Perspective Without Pain, & The Art of Perspective, both by Phil Metzger. I think the second one better (and more recent). He actually has another book, Pencil Magic, that's focused more on pencil drawing but includes basic instruction on perspective as well. It has some great drawings in it, too.

It's such a joy to see your sketchbook progress! Thanks for sharing it with us (I love the castle sketch, by the way!).

Thank you Hilary for your comment and the book recommendation.
Finally I found a german book about perspective sketching. Maybe it will help...

Yesterday I did the landscape sketch very, very quickly on location in the field while walking my dogs. I was so happy, because the sun was shining all day and the snow has melted.
In the evening I saw the cranes flying back in the northern territories. Now spring is coming :)

A few days ago I bought a new, small bag for my sketchbook and my supplies. It is actually a gundog-training bag, but it is perfect for my sketching supplies.

After three sunny and warm days last week, snow is back. Lots of snow :(
This Winter is the cloudiest since 60 years here in Germany.

My Alpha Sketchbook is nearly complete, only 5 pages... In my drawer is already the next, a Stillman and Birn Epsilon. Can`t wait to start it, it will be my "Spring-Sketchbook"

It was fun catching up with your sketches. Talk of perspective made me get out my books, no to read them and put them to use.

Your blue page is grand and your marbles are just fine. I have a box of old cat eyes somewhere, they probably haven't been played with in a hundred years.

Joan T

I think you did the shading inside the marble really well. I used to have a few of them but for the life of me I don't know where they are any more. They would be fun to paint.
