View Full Version : My sketchbook drawings with digital coloring

01-05-2013, 08:18 PM

Hello! I'd like to post work from my sketchbooks here. I've been keeping a sketchbook for years now and would like to share my recent work. These would be from a regular 9x12 inch sketchbook. I really like the recycled paper sketchbooks too, those are the grainy images. Then I usually spend a half hour adding color to each page.

I've got lots of other art journals to check out now!

Welcome! You'll find this a fun and friendly forum, with a wide variety of styles and interests. Nice sketches here of a perenially fun subject.

This is a huge website, it'd be cool to pick up a new medium like photography or sculpting even, so much cool stuff on here.

01-05-2013, 08:33 PM
Hey thanks John! There sure is a lot to check out here.

01-05-2013, 09:03 PM
Great to see another new face and journal. Really like your sketches. As John said we are a friendly bunch so hope you settle in and feel at home. Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome to WC

Welcome to Art Journals. Fun sketches going on here.

Thanks everyone! This is a pencil sketch of some trees I saw in the park one day and some photoshop coloring applied later. I'm trying to use photoshop in a more direct way, pretending it's paint, or at least thinking about how I use the program differently. So far it's been fun, I guess focusing more on the 'shop' part and less on the 'photo' part of that program.

01-07-2013, 04:54 PM
Very nice. Beautiful tree

01-07-2013, 06:44 PM
Great tree, love the effect you have got with the colour. Awesome page.

01-07-2013, 08:22 PM
Marvelous trees. The color and sketch parts work well on the page.

Thanks, I hope to blend the pencils and the digital colors more. I like treating the digital stuff in a more traditional manner. Things like in paint you can over-do colors, lose transparency and things, in digital there are so many ways of working to get the color you want. I'm hoping to come up with an interesting approach through sketching more like this.

A pen and marker sketch of the corner of a building in the city. I've always enjoyed sketching outside during the day. One of the pitfalls of the old office job for me is certainly being stuck inside while all the day happens without you, all the light changes and color changes.

01-11-2013, 02:34 PM
Glad you could get outside. Great rendering of the building.

01-13-2013, 02:52 PM

Thanks, DrDebby!

The lines got away from me on this one, but it's such fun to draw and great practice.

01-13-2013, 04:14 PM
Cool work :)

01-13-2013, 04:40 PM
Another great urban sketch.

01-15-2013, 12:30 AM

Thanks eyepaint and Dr Debby! These are sketches of some of many of my own characters that I hope to put into comic stories someday. Pencil with a little photoshop.

01-15-2013, 01:10 AM
Another great page. The coloured section is such an integral part of the layout. Awesome.

01-15-2013, 06:00 PM
Seeing that page, I am looking forward to reading your comic.

01-16-2013, 12:56 AM

Thanks!! I'm glad you saw the color pull it together that way. My sketch pages get overdrawn but I feel adding color you can control a focal point. I'm probably going to be sketching characters a lot in here as I learn to draw them. I have trouble with maintaining consistency from drawing to drawing with characters, not to mention learning outfits and such.

01-16-2013, 04:19 PM
Beautiful landscape. Keep practicing and you will get the characteristics down on your characters.

01-17-2013, 12:29 AM

Thanks, that's my goal, practice and get it down.

Spent longer coloring these, but the sketches had a lot of character so I thought I'd do my best to shine them up.

01-17-2013, 12:58 AM
These are fantastic, all such great characters. The 2nd on top row is my fav.

01-17-2013, 01:04 AM
The 2nd on top row is my fav.
Mine too. Nice caricatures.
Keep it up.

01-17-2013, 04:32 PM
Fantastic bunch of characters.

01-19-2013, 03:02 AM
Thanks guys!!

This one is one of my favorites, it just turned out well without much effort, those are the best sketches, ha.

01-19-2013, 01:51 PM
very nice sketches. . . the marker pen buildings are amazing. I like you pencil drawings a lot. So you are scanning them and adding color with computer? What program do you use on the computer. These are very nice!

01-19-2013, 05:38 PM
That last one looks very surreal with the head coming out of the landscape. Cool.

01-20-2013, 02:22 PM
great fun, love all the characatures, good luck with the comic production

01-20-2013, 03:44 PM
Cool sketches! You have a great imagination.

01-23-2013, 12:01 AM

Thanks everyone!! I'm very happy to be sharing my sketchbooks, I've been drawing in them for years and I've always just kept them to myself or on the shelf, I'm happy you like my stuff!!

RainySea - Yes these are mostly all pencil on paper, one of my many different types of sketchbooks and then scanned into my computer and colored with photoshop. My day job is 100% photoshop and has been for years so I really enjoy every moment I get with a pencil.

DrDebby - Yeah ha, these pages are mostly random sketching so things just end up where ever there's white space left. Fun way to fill a page for me.

01-23-2013, 03:44 PM
I like this one with a bit of cloudy sky in the background.

01-24-2013, 12:11 AM
Thanks DrDebby! These are cartoon characters from another comic I plan to draw, hopefully very soon.

01-24-2013, 12:58 AM
Really like the columns. This last page looks like lots of fun.

01-24-2013, 01:45 PM
Thanks everyone!! I'm very happy to be sharing my sketchbooks...
We're glad you are sharing them, too.
That's the nice thing about art journals. Every style and medium is acceptable and welcome.
Thanks for sharing.

Very cool comic characters. The one eating through the helmet is hilarious.

01-30-2013, 11:46 PM

Thanks guys! This is another sketch and color. Exploration and ideas for settings for my comic.

01-31-2013, 04:02 PM
Cool cloud city/castle.

01-31-2013, 09:51 PM
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/31-Jan-2013/1171344-CA.org_SK_009.jpg Thank you! Here are sketches of characters that may someday find themselves in that castle, except Mickey, ha!

01-31-2013, 09:57 PM
Really like these faces and characters. Mickey isnt too bad either.. lol The sky tower is cool.

02-01-2013, 04:00 PM
Super characters. Nice job on Mickey.

I love the interesting characters you've done! Your pages are really great! Thanks for sharing all of them.

02-20-2013, 12:19 AM

Good to get back to sketching again! Thanks everyone!

02-20-2013, 02:42 AM
I absolutely adore your characters, each of them has such a unique look. And the cloud castle looks great, I'm sure there is an interesting story behind it.

02-20-2013, 10:26 AM
Great stuff!

Do you use a full version of Photoshop or the express version to do this? Mouse or tablet?

02-20-2013, 03:17 PM
Wonderful character sketches.

02-20-2013, 09:24 PM
Great job on these...very different!

02-21-2013, 01:14 AM
Thanks, I use Photoshop cs4 and an intuos 3 tablet to color. So far everything has been drawn in pencil or ink. Though I do sketch digitally a bit as well, it's much easier to draw on paper.

03-01-2013, 05:53 PM
And yet another pencil sketch with a little digital color. Someday I'll get some real paint out I hope.

03-01-2013, 06:15 PM
Just caught up on your thread, and am really impressed with your sketches. The caricatures are great, but so is everything here.

03-09-2013, 08:49 PM

I really like how this guy came out.

And some photoshop still life attempt, trying to capture the color and light with simple shapes.

03-10-2013, 02:27 PM
More great characters. Like the squared off apples. They certainly stack nicer that way. :)

03-12-2013, 02:04 PM
It was fun coloring those apples because after an hour they were a different color, so I had to stop, ha.

Some more cartoon face sketching.

03-12-2013, 04:21 PM
Great expressions on that fellow.
