Quick sketch I did, 16 x 20 inches on canvas. C and C welcome. I find the oil stick works well for big marks. Learning how to get detail with it. With these I enjoy the gesture quality to them.

They are great for sketching and getting gestures down quickly. Welcome to our forum Shaun.... Are you using the big oil sticks or regular oil pastels?

I like the colors you used in your sketch. Just a hint of light in the eyes would bring him to life. You captured a lot of detail for a quick sketch. Welcome to the forum!

I am using the big oil sticks. I hope they qualify for oil pastels. I am not sure. Thank you everyone.

Shaun, The warm colors you used in the first portrait rendered it not so somber. You did well with the facial features proportions and it's good for a quick study. However, the second one you did could be called somber. In fact, it may be down right frightening.
