View Full Version : Belated Christmas Gift - Scratchboard WIP

Hi all!

This is a portrait of my best friend's Arabian, Jet. It was supposed to be a birthday present (in August ), but I got too busy with school and life to finish it in time, so now it's going to be a belated Christmas gift. No more delays :crossfingers:.

This is scratchboard 8.5x11". I've only done one other scratchboard piece and loved the medium. I'm finding this one to be a bit more of a challenge though, especially the mane, which I haven't started to tackle yet. I'm kind of dreading it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to render the mane?

C&C welcome

This is beautiful and looks tedious, one stroke/cut at a time. Looks like you already did the mane and know what you have to do. Looking great so,far.

Thanks everyone.

Nelvia, thank you! It is VERY tedious, which is partly why I have been putting off getting back to work. I haven't actually started on the mane yet. I've only drawn a few lines with chalk to outline the direction of the hair. I need to just suck it up and get back to work though b/c my deadline is fast approaching.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but the last few days I haven't done anything. I finally put in a bit of time on this piece. I wish I could find some motivation 'cuz my deadline is tomorrow!

Anyways, here it is. Still a bit more to do on the neck, and I've hardly touched the mane.

Finally finished! I'm not exactly pleased with the end product, especially the neck and mane on the left. I just decided that I needed to put it down and let it be called done, because I was afraid of over working it and ruining all my hard work. Plus my blade started getting really dull and I didn't want to buy a new one.

Comments and critique welcome!
