View Full Version : Holiday Cafe Michaelangelo-Dec 2012
12-03-2012, 10:04 AM
We are taking a rest this month to think up some good stuff for 2013. All ideas welcome.
You can work on previous projects this month. I didn't get to do a few of them, so I'll try to make some time to contribute.
The Holiday Cafe is open for winter thoughts, recipes, poems, photos, drawings and cards (any hand-made ones, out there?) even a few New Years resolutions are OK.
Anyway have a happy holiday, season or whatever....love, janet:heart:

Hi janet. Hope you are feeling better. I am into making some ATC's at the moment..which is enjoyable and easy to fit around the Christmas bustle of organizing gifts, food, cards etc.
12-03-2012, 11:53 AM
I found a friendly forum dedictated to trading ATCs. Its at
Here's one I made today.
The princess and the parrot. Pen and watercolours, ATC.
12-03-2012, 05:22 PM
Janet I want to go back and contribute to a few I have missed. Wanting to spend some art time for me again.
June ATCs are fun. I did get a bit addicted at one point... lol I used to be active on that site. They are very friendly.
12-04-2012, 01:36 AM
Hi Jacqui, maybe we could trade sometime if you get into ATCs again!!
12-04-2012, 07:20 AM
Janet, I agree. A month of rest sounds good. There's so much I want to go back to to post more.
It's so nice to see card size creations that are so loose and yet together.
12-04-2012, 12:47 PM
great idea for the month....i have a couple of catchups to do...june, that is so cute!!!! tyree:wave:
12-04-2012, 07:38 PM
Sounds good June
12-08-2012, 10:15 AM
For the first time, I made Christmas cards. This year, I finally am giving presents away - 3 of my paintings, and so these are cards.
This is the first time I understood what the Daniel Smith Pearlescent Shimmer paint is for. It's really just a layer to add shimmer. I love it. Then these have all kinds of Holbein gouache irisdiscents and Daniel Smith irisdiscents too.
I'll write on top of the design of these cards.
Strathmore precut 5x7 inch waercolor cards
This one is Raffine 6x6 sketchbook with neocolor II and wash too.
12-09-2012, 10:07 AM
Nice idea for cards...I like the idea of writing on top of the print....Please show us one. Shimmer paint? I'll have to look that up. You always find the most interesting art supplies Sandra

One practicing Smooth Bristol with pencil with a kids' book pix of giraffe. Love how eraser erases completely.
0.9 mm mechanical pencil
12-10-2012, 12:11 PM
sandra....those cards are especially lovely...i love the first one.....dont you love working with smooth bristol!!!! tyree:wave:
12-10-2012, 04:11 PM
Love the giraffes Sandra. More of you are working on ATC's.... they are really starting to call to me. If I only knew where my blanks are.
12-12-2012, 06:05 PM
They are really fun to play with. I think I'm going to revisit all the STAR WARS creatures on ATC cards this time rather than odd sized ones.
12-13-2012, 06:54 AM
I love those giraffes. So huggable. I am enjoying making and trading ATC's. I got 3 from USA which are just so spectacular. And one from Holland which is so delicate and lovely. I sent some of mine's off in return.
Maybe we could arrange an ATC exchange project here in classical for January, if you are keen. We could have a topic or we could just do swaps of cards on any subject.
What do you think - all??
12-14-2012, 11:43 AM
That sounds like fun. Any subject will do. But doesn't the Miniature forum run something like that already?
12-14-2012, 06:32 PM
Sandra I think in the miniature forum it is just projects that they swap not the monthly challenges thing. I think.
June I would be up for a swap in Jan, would be fun. I'd like a topic to go with it too :)
12-15-2012, 05:16 PM
These were done on ATC size with Strathmore 140 lb cold press and Dr. PH Martin Bombay India ink, and then Chinese india ink layered on top for half an hour and then wash it water to rid the black from the colored areas. *In real life, the colors look dull. *If I use photoshop, it would be prettier but I don't have the program in this new computer so it'll stay as such now. *These would make cute gift cards.
12-15-2012, 06:22 PM
Loving your atc's esp the first in this new batch.
12-17-2012, 12:45 PM
sandra...quite lovely....especially the poppies....they caught my attention right away....!!!! tyree
12-17-2012, 02:34 PM
Love the atc's. Sandra. Its a good way to do something fun and try new techniques.
We will have an atc project here in january. Topic ideas welcomed.
We will make it an exchange, so if you are interested you can sign up on the classical forum project thread and do trading within that thread.

An ATC of a dog from the WDE this weekend.
12-18-2012, 09:41 AM
Love all the work everyone did this month. My fingers are somewhat better,so hope to contribute more next month.
Did these collage angels in Sept. or no one would have gotten any cards this year.
Happy Holidays to you and I hope you all get $2000. gift certificates to an art store in your stocking.
12-18-2012, 10:38 AM
Janet, I wouldn't even know what to buy if I do get $2000 gift certificate from my art store. I have so much already.
Yesterday I gave away all my oil paint to a fellow cancer stage 4 survivor and saved a small 6 tube water mixable oil set for myself. I can't stand the smell of chemical at all.
Lovely collages. They blend so well together you can't tell it's a collage.
June, is your ATC acrylic or watercolor? So pretty!!! Your skills on drawing small is so good with a brush - something I'm struggling with still.
Can't find the link to project ATC.
12-18-2012, 10:39 AM
Hi ya'll - it is soooo good to see everyone's art.
I took off since october to get some old projects done.

Robin, welcome back. I am looking forward to seeing your new work. You must have got tons done!!
Janet, the angel cards are beautiful. So reminiscent of medieval art!
12-18-2012, 05:10 PM
Sandra your work is free and those giraffee's are sooooo cuddle adorable.
Yes, I think an ATC exchange project would be fun. I'm thinking of doing icon's.
June the dog is wonderful. Love that background. How did you get the little flecks and straight lines? looks like a cross between carpet and linoleum tiles.....really nice
12-18-2012, 05:30 PM
getting into sacred geometry lately.
well, this is soooo small. ...I'll keep trying
12-18-2012, 06:29 PM
June great dog ATC
Love the angel cards Janet
Great to see you Robin, pic is a bit hard to see but still looks good.
I"ve been playing and trying to get back into my watercolours, mixed results so far.
12-19-2012, 03:54 AM
Hey Robin, the little flecks are a neat trick I learned from a watercolour book. When your paint is wet, you take a watercolour pencil and a piece of sandpaper (or emery board) and scrape the colour from the pencil onto the wet paint. It falls in little flecks onto the paint. Like fine stippling.
I like the idea of a medieval or icon type of theme for the atc project. Any other ideas?
We could do nursery rhymes since we've had lots of practise with our book illustrators such as Rackham.
12-28-2012, 07:54 AM
Well, I hope you all had a lovely holiday. Looking forward to the new year!! :D
12-30-2012, 07:39 PM
jacqui - how is the schooling ? Watercolors are fun.
June - thanks for the fleck secret. Hope to try it soon. I'm working on some drawings for a story my husband wrote and plan to use frontage.
hope I can figure out how to resize my stuff to post soon..
I think nursery rhyme ATC's would be fun....or how about reptiles
12-30-2012, 07:43 PM

12-30-2012, 10:40 PM
i have one more rackman im finishing up....wasnt sure whether to put them in this thread...or the rackmans.... hope this was okidoke......i was thinking some gothic churches, or romanesque churches, maybe not the whole churches but parts that we find interesting in the churches...the columns, gargoyles, the tricept, windows etc....perhaps even more of the dot theme.....pointilism paintings.....anything of these sound good??? for the new year???? i hopefully will finish this last rackman by tomorrow......tyree:wave:
12-31-2012, 04:16 AM
Lovely image June. I really like that tip of using shavings from the watercolour pencils, must try it out soon.
Hey Robin, finished school for the year, am half way through my course, wish it could just keep going. Love the sacred geometry's esp the first one.
Tyree great Rackman pic. Like your churches idea, and find pointillism very addictive, both great ideas.
Happy New Year everyone, looking forward to a great year ahead in art. :)
12-31-2012, 06:03 AM
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU
Robin's geometrics, June's lovely dog. Sandra's poppies and cards, Tyree's Rackhams and Jacqui's boots...if fact all the contributors to footwear. Wishing you all a very HAPPY 2013. You have taught me a lot over the year and allowed me to enjoy your art work.
01-01-2013, 12:18 AM
Yes, Happy New Year Ya'll
Susan = I like the gothic church idea and pointillism. Love the Alice piece. That's what life feels like sometimes.
I think my reptile suggestion is a little strange not very classical.
