One of the only things I dislike about shopping on the internet is the fact that you have to rely totally on visual rather than actual touch. Not to mention the fact that your visual range is limited to the picture posted and how bad/good it is.

Anyhow, to the matter at hand. I use those "cheapo" pine wood pastel boxes that come with 1, 2 or 3 drawers. The first two I bought at the Pearl Paint store in VA. The next two I bought at Dick Blick and they were the same as the Pearl box. I'd seen them at ASW Express as well, but for $4 more, so I passed them up.

Anyhow, my Schminckes barely fit in the box. You have to be REAL careful about closing the drawer or they get "caught". Forget about trying to put a Unison in there. So, I like them, but it would be REAL nice if they made them just a little deeper and of a better quality.

Two weeks ago I placed an order with ASW for a 96 box of Nupastels and noticed they had the boxes on sale for $29.99 -- now comparable with Pearl and Dick Blick. I needed another one and I was already placing an order, so I ordered it. I received it yesterday.

I can't tell the difference between the pictures in the catalogs and on the web. They all look like the same box. It is NOT the same box that Pearl and Dick Blick sell! ARGH!

The boxes I bought from Pearl and Dick Blick are crudely put together, unsanded and rough as all get-out, and not very deep.

The box I got from ASW Express was nicely sanded, well-made, sturdy, and MY UNISONS EVEN FIT IN IT WITH NO PROBLEM!

Sorry for yelling :P

Anyhooooooooo, my point is that if you are going to buy a pine box, get it from ASW Express, on sale or no. It's a better box!

Thankfully, my husband has offered to replace my other four boxes with ASW ones. Not that the others will go to waste, they're still great for storing things and I already have an idea of how I will use a couple in the kitchen :P

Here are my boxes:

The unfinished top one is the new one from ASW. The other four are the crappy ones. I color-coded them with very bright paint :P

Thanks for the info Roan....I agree about the internet...you really can't tell what you are getting. Those boxes you showed on Artistry's site about the pastel set ups....they have dividers in them....does the ASW come with dividers or did you have to make some to fit in the boxes????

Thanks for all your help!!

They have dividers all right.

The shot at the bottom on Diane's site -- the one that has the drawer out and chamois in it -- that's the new one I got from ASW Express.

How many pastels does this box hold? How many Unison? How many Schmincke for example? Somehow I have collected over 300 pastels in the last month.

ROFL! You go, Shari!

Before I purchased my Schmincke, I had Rembrandts and Winsor & Newtons in there. I had it estimated at approximately 72 per drawer. So, the 1 drawer held 72, 2 drawers 144, 3 drawers 216.

Now my pastels are a huge mix of Rembrandt, Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Rowney, Unison and Sennelier. The Rembrandt, Winsor & Newton and Schmincke are similar in diameter. Schmincke are a tad rounder, tho, and do take up a bit more room. Unison are even more rounder in the very middle. Lemme see if I can work out a formula for this.

Okay, now, this is for the ASW box, not the other ones:

The inside of the drawer has space for 7.75 inches of pastel -- pastel width, not length. Length isn't an issue. 1 Unison takes up about .75 inches of space. Schmincke about .625 inches. Rembrandt and Winsor & Newton are .5, Sennelier are .375 and Rowney are thinner still. I'd say about .35 or so.

Schmincke: 12.4 per row * 4 rows = approximately 49.6 per drawer, 148.8 per 3 drawer cabinet

Unison: 10.3 per row * 4 rows = approximately 41.2 per drawer, 123.6 per 3 drawer cabinet

Here's an actual count with brands for one of my full drawers (not crammed, tho. I don't pack them in tightly):

12 Rembrandt
3 Unison
27 Schmincke
9 Winsor & Newton
5 Rowney
7 Sennelier
+6 Unisons in the small middle section, sitting lengthwise
----------
69 Total for one drawer

Keep in mind that you can often fit 3/4 and 1/2 bits and pieces lengthwise in places where you've used up half a stick. There's a lot of width in each row to work with.

Assuming that's a good mix and all the drawers are full, let's say -10 per drawer for the rest (although it's probably a lot more, not less. I have more Rowneys in the other drawers), 69 + 59 + 59 = approximately 187 in that entire cabinet. That's a good conservative estimate

If your pastels are all Unison or Schmincke, then it will be easier for you to figure out exactly what you would need. Just use the numbers up top . . .

Let's say you have 180 Schmincke and 120 Unison. You'd need 180 x .625 = 112.5 inches + 120x.75=90. 90+112.5=202.5 inches total. One drawer has 7.75*4 =31 inches of space. So, 112.5 /31 = 3.6 drawers.

Hope this helps, Shari!

Well, the Visa bill just came today for my spending spree last month and OH MY GOD! How did I do it? I am in shock but I have all these beautiful pastels. I feel guilty though, I have only done 4 paintings . . . which leads me to another question, how often do you paint?

Anyway, I truly want to thank you for doing all that complicated math. Wow, did you do that all yourself? I am totally right brain, can you tell? My husband is the mathematician in our house. It sure seems like those boxes will work for me, I am going to order two of them (after I pay the visa bill)! My husband says I can't spend another penny on pastels (if only he knew)). Thanks again so much for all your help.

ROFL! I said the same thing after my first couple of spending sprees. Once you get a good grip on things you tend to slow down a lot. I did.

Anyway, I truly want to thank you for doing all that complicated math. Wow, did you do that all yourself? I am totally right brain, can you tell? My husband is the mathematician in our house.

I wasn't sure if I should or not -- I mean, I didn't want to imply that you or anyone else couldn't figure it out on their own.

Anyhoooooo, it wasn't a big deal, really. It's not complicated math -- in my former life I was a Production Planner/Project Leader for 5 years and a Network Admin for 3. That was my coporate career and all with the same company. After I moved to the states and got married we both decided I'd take a break for a while. Heh, some break. It's been 6 years :P

Glad to help. Let me know if the boxes work out or no.
