View Full Version : How to draw propellers?
11-15-2012, 11:49 PM
I'm working on a Spitfire using Prismacolors->http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1297398
I'd like to know how to draw the propellers. NeilF92 (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/member.php?u=95311) gave a few suggestions. What method have folks here used? Any pointers on how to get the ellipse right?

Welcome aboard scifi .
I hope some of the others will be along soon to give their advice .
I'll dig out an article (or two) from a magazine I get from The Manchester aviation art society where this debate is perennial!
Wade Meyers in the E-Hangar forum also demonstrated ellipse drawing I think - worth a look in there as well if you can get to it.

Sorry - the articles I'm thinking of must be in the hard copy versions I ditched when we moved house .
Here are some links which may help steer you .

Check out this link
- E-mail Pete nield - you'll see his address at the bottom of that page -. He now has charge of the APM programme .
But he also knows a lot about ellipses and propellors !! Well worth dropping him an e- mail - he probably has a tutorial somewhere.
Apart from APM - look at Joes GP Geometric projection method - a simple way of getting a 3D view from plan drawings.
If you enquire about APM be s ure to get the latest info about which version of Excel you need or if there is any way of using Open Office spreadsheet . (Not at the last enquiry I made but things may have progressed. )
The MACRO facility in Excel was dropped some years back so it may still be the case that you need an older version of Excel e.g. 2003 or so.
I'm sure there is also plenty of info about the correct drawing of ellipses to be found on the net though .

I was also interested in Joe DeMarco's APM program as well and had a nice email discussion with Peter. I will be purchasing it soon. He even sent me a generated sample for a drawing of a Spitfire I am working on. I actually found out we had a lot in common as I am a retired Aerospace Engineer as well.

I was checking out E-Hangar and there doesn't seem to be a way to join or contact the admin? do you belong to that site?
