I saw these in my Dick Blick catalog some time ago and had an idea of using them to frame pastels:

The clips look like they protrude about 1/4" into the viewing area. Now, if you take a 1/2" spacer, fix it to an extremely narrow matboard -- a tad wider than the clips --

Sort of like this:

and make sure your painting is the exact width of the glass so that it's held back by the spacers, do you think this would work?

Anyone tried anything like this?

Dan,

Yes, those are spacers I'm referring to, however I'm talking about using Swiss Clips instead of a frame.

There'd actually be about a 1/4"- 1/2" mat border around the painting instead of a frame.

When framing with clips, make sure the edges of the glass have been sanded with fine emery cloth or something similar so they won't be sharp.

Personally, I like to see a wide mat around my pastels - usually 2-1/2" - 3" on the top and sides and about 1/4" more than that at the bottom. Also, I like to use 8-ply mat board. The extra depth is a very nice look.

Right you are, Barry!

I was thinking of this method based on the Joe Plaskett artwork we were discussing in another thread -- as a possible way of framing that type of work.

Joe Plaskett artwork is usually huge and composed by two or four full size Canson sheets of paper.
I seen them individually framed and shown side by side with plexiglass held at the corners with some kind of round brass screws.....Not a thing that can be home made, I think...
Joe is Canadian and me and Dan are very lucky to have been able to see some of his work in Galleries and public buildings.

I am framing with the material called frame space...a self adhesive(sp?) clear 1/8"
plexi... I stick frame space to glass then trim pastel and backing to the same size as glass then tape all together..the pieces then store well and drop in and out of gallery frames regards Dan
