View Full Version : Uh oh, Wabbitt got SMASHed

10-09-2012, 12:29 AM
I really didn't need to start another journal, I've got over 10 that I've got on the go, but I got this book on impluse. SMASH is a marketing gimmick to sell the scrapbooking hobby at another level. I'm not a scrapbooker, nor do I want to accumulate all the components for scrapbooking. Lord knows I'm fully stocked with art supplies. However, what this book has done is help pull me out of a little "artist block" compounded by too much work the first half of the year.

Whoops, I painted over the whole page.

I learned that Sharpies don't bleed through. Watercolor, even Inktense is too transparent. Goache just beads up on the page. Seems the paper really is meant to glues stuff on (collage). Acrylic gesso is the winner.

10-09-2012, 12:43 AM
I did try some collage, but without gesso, sometimes my acrylics are too transparent on darker pages. I learned that glue stick isn't strong enough. My rubber cement shrunk and concentrated ick. Nori paste makes the page buckle. Mod Podge is a winner!

The two page spread doesn't fit in my scanner. But I learned how to stitch it together in GIMP2.

I pasted some blank ACEO size watercolor paper then did a couple weeks of WDE references. I had to redo one, which was a pain to pull out. I've since gotten photo corners, but I suppose I could have just pasted another blank on top of it.

Most of the written part of the journals are personal. I'm sharing the art.

From scavenger hunt #286: acrylics, collage, inktense, ink, watersoluble graphite.

Thanks for looking. There will be more.

A fun journal Wabbit :)

I enjoyed your art journal! Fave is the mummy catching the Lorax. So the SMASH book is made of all different scrapbooking papers? How neat- yes I see that can be good for artist block. Please keep posting- this is a great type or artist journal & gets the brain going for new ideas.

10-09-2012, 02:41 PM
Great book. very interesting. My fav is the mummy and the lorax too:)

Candace - a smash book is where you put everyday things - the stickers, wrappers of things, anything really. Smash them into a book the way I understand it.

I like that you are using so many different ideas in this!!! Cool! I guess now I have my answer about the design on the paper you used in the hunt thread. Nice journal!

Wonderful playful art journal. It made me smile. Glad it got you out of your slump. I like the zip-line people having a conversation about "live" trees.

What fun these are! I like the collages, and your hand drawn/painted art, and how you combined them. Really cool!

Barbie was once my fashion model. I made clothes for her when I was in junior high. When I moved out of the house after college, Mom packed her up until I moved back to Cali. All her clothes & accessories were missing, along with her RV & her ex, Ken.

yaye, love it....go to the top of the class, nice to see someone with more journals than me  - can never have too many journals...

Poor Barbie. Wonderful journal spread.

What fun!

Thanks, everyone for your comments. Like I said in my first post of the thread, this sketchbook pulled me out of a little artist block, but WOW! I can't say I'm flooded but I've got plenty of ideas rolling around in my head now and it's got me working in several of my other sketchbooks.

I was in an art store tonight and next to the Smash books, Strathmore now has a version of their own in similar sizes to the Smash journals.

Oil pastel ACEOs, now glued into the Smash journal.

Full page, acrylics, from this week's WDE invitation. I'd like to have been able to do more texture on the donkey fur but I've run out of weekend.

Thanks for looking.

I was starting to struggle again and I found inspiration in Roger's journal title "nothing has to make sense." I'm such a logical person, those words were like a window to freedom.

Which got me sketching again!

12-11-2012, 01:59 AM
Which got me painting...

bonus...more grumpiness

12-11-2012, 09:34 AM
lol, fun kitty! I really like the jeans page :) it made me smile.

12-11-2012, 01:28 PM
Hey I love your "nothing has to make sense" pages! They add a touch of daily diary to the mix, with a bunch of bits from your life, fave eateries, things you enjoy.

12-13-2012, 06:06 PM
Gotta love the grumpy cat paintings. :)

12-14-2012, 05:13 AM
The rabbit is lovely and the grumpy cat made me laugh

Thanks Candice, Debby, & bookscorpion.

I had unexpected free time this weekend so after I finished off and filed away Sketchbook #15, I took stock of my acrylic paints and sketchbooks I've already started. Additionally, I was able to repurpose/recycle two notebooks into sketchbooks. I'll continue smashing in the ringbound one.

That's another use for journals, lists of stuff to do. Great. I really like how you made your lists on colored backgrounds with collage involved.

You are right...nothing has to make sense...life is like that! lol I'm enjoying your pages.

12-19-2012, 05:50 PM
Really creative and lots of fun. Love all the colour. Would be a great journal to look back on.

Some souvenirs from the Christmas activities. OMG, I'm getting bolder. No, I didn't win anything from all these raffle tickets.

12-29-2012, 05:39 PM
Very creative use of all the little bits and pieces.

12-29-2012, 07:56 PM
Very creative use of the journal pages! I sometimes do material inventory and tests on journal pages and think its a great use for them. Collage is fun, too! And a great way to keep small things

I love these journal pages...they are so fun!

Haven't been very active sketching or smashing lately. I caught the cruddy cold that's going around and it's been too chilly down at my computer to work/surf into the night so I've been cuddled up in bed with my iPad.

It was warmer today. I got new material over the weekend, I found $1 duct tape, as opposed the $5+ rolls. It's really fun, I made two skechbooks with the original roll. But GAH, this fake stuff stinks! I can even smell it through my cold.

01-17-2013, 01:01 AM
Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. I iTunes cards look really good on this page. Stinky duct tape... ewwww, not good.

01-17-2013, 01:08 AM
You can fix anything with duct tape... even a cold.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

I always enjoy seeing you pages.

01-17-2013, 04:30 PM
Sorry about your cold and stinky duct tape. Lively pages you've made tho'.

Been spending time on the iPad lately and in a new sketchbook. The spiderman page was done for a couple weeks, just waiting for something on the facing page. Rather than using my ol' scanner, I tried the iPad camera today. I still had to copy it to the PC to crop it and adjust the file size. Any iPad app suggestions to do that?

Thanks for looking.

01-27-2013, 07:17 PM
I'm going to say the first thing I thought of when I saw this spread. Spiderman is thinking about flowers? Great pages.

Love the color and compositions of your pages! Too bad the cheap duct tape is so smelly!

I've been busy with lots of work, wanted to do something loose. I found inspiration at Ross (store). Acrylics w/ some pen.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Mar-2013/76057-13-03smash001.jpg
Thanks for looking.

Beautiful! I like the butterfly!

Damn, I never intended to buy another SMASH book because I made a couple of my own mixed media books by recycling a couple of my half-used wirebound notebooks. But I was at Michaels yesterday looking for something small to buy so I can get a 40% off coupon for a larger purchase. There in the bargain racks was another SMASH book of the same size for $5, wow! There is no plastic cover or pen--so what? New one has photo pockets.

This is the last page I'll post from SMASH#1. I did fill up all the pages but they're more personal.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement.

Great dino pages.

What lovely cheerful creative work, it really made me smile to look at all your great pics. Thanks for sharing a good way to beat that creative block.
