glosssy surface

I had a problem recently when I was finishing my self-portrait. I pressed the Rembrandt pastel too tard and some lines got a glossy surface, so that the paper could not keep the pastel any longer. And I wet these spots with hot water and put the pastel later when they were dry. I sort of worked it out, but could you please help and recommend me something to remove this glossy surfaces?

I've had this happen,too, and it's very frustrating. That shiny, slick paper just refuses to accept pastel. Here is how I have handled it in the past: I sprayed some fixative onto a piece of waxed paper, then used a small "sable" soft brush, and brushed this liquid fixative onto the shiny place. Let dry, and you can come back again over it very carefully. If anyone else has another solution, I'd love to hear it! Good luck!

What kind of surface was this? Canson...Fabriano? One of the things I have done in the past when "locked out" was to slightly scrape some of the pastel from the surface, then "touch" it with a little fixative to give it a little tooth and then reapply the pastel correction. Usually if you start with harder pastels then work up to the softer ones, you will save the tooth of the paper. 4vincent
