Could someone please explain in non-glass maker terms what etching is. I have a few quesses but would like to be able to explain it to my customers. (I sell jewelry I make from all your wonderful beads) Thanks!

Suzy,

Etching is simply applying an acid creme on glass to produce a matte finish.

I'm sure you have seen glassware (ex. Pier One) that had a decorative matte finish in a certain design. Well, we apply it to beads to achieve the same effect.

You could say that etching gives the glass a frosted look where the etching cream is applied.

Technical version:
Acid etching glass is technically using acid to eat away at the silicates in glass, which produces a slightly uneven surface that appears matte. It renders the glass sligthly porous on the surface.
