View Full Version : Pastel Portraiture Palette help!

Hi guys,

I need to put together a (reasonably limited) selection of soft pastels to do portraits for a uni project tomorrow.

Our uni Drawing class is off to the local hospital tomorrow to do portraits of some of the hospital staff - extremely daunting for someone who's only just started trying to do portraits!!

I have the full set of Winsor & Newton soft pastels, and a set of 60 Rembrandts (landscape set)...

So, if anybody has a favourite selection of colours they prefer for portraits, I'd love to hear them! Very much appreciated :D

Thank you!

I think I'll cross-post this in the portraiture forum too :cat:

Wow, thrown in at the deep end, eh? Good luck. However, I'm sure you'll do fine!
I don't have any Windsor and newton, but I did pick up a color chart the other day, and on the back are their own recommendations for colors for specific subjects. I'll copy it for you..
Here goes:

Figure Painting:
Permanent Rose Tint 1
Yellow ochre Tint 1, 2
Gold ochre 2
Burnt umber 1, 2

Hookers green 5
Oxide of chromium 5
Add burnt Sienna 4 or
Raw Sienna 4

Indantrene Blue 2
Indian Red 3

Burnt Umber 4
Raw Umber 4
Yellow ochre 5
Darken with Cobalt blue 5

I guess you can try them out beforehand and see if you agree.
Good luck! Tell us how you got on!

Thankyou very very much Madder :)
I should have thought to look for the WN web site, etc.
I appreciate this very much :)
I will try these out and see how they work for me and maybe add/subtract other colours.
