Wow!! Excellent entry, SouthernSun!!!
I so admire people who have the guts and imagination to create differently, like a palm tree in reds and blues!!! Amazing!! I always like these types of compositions when I see them, but never, ever able to strike out like that myself!!
Just beautiful!!

Even so, it is beautiful already, just as it is. You've been goin' to town, Girl!! : )

I guess I have a couple of questions re this project.

1. Do you wet your whole paper and do a wet-in-wet technique?

2. If so do you just lay colors in and see where they got and then improvise from there?

3. If doing on a dry piece of paper, then do you just use a large brush (e.g., 1" or 1-1/2") and lay in colors?

Just wondered. Thought I might try it but wasn't sure how to go about it.

How is this different from pouring or do you just use brush?

Also, do you just do one shot and leave it, in other words do you load your brush with more paint than water or a variation?

Just trying to learn. thanks for answers.

Hi Judy and thanks for asking all those questions...its helps everyone as some people are afraid to ask questions....here goes....
1. yes not one the whole sheet but both sides gives me about 30 minutes to work....

2. yes pick colors I like and turn them loose...

3.I never paint on dry paper....I spray water on always then use a big brush....

4. I don't like to pour as I like a bit more control over the water and paint....

5. never a one shot....load the brush then load it again with a different color and keep going let them blend and see what happens...

6. Now you are ready !!! Give it a try I will be here to help you aloing the way...

Alan :)

This was my first watercolor painting done at my first watercolor art class in June this year. Only got 3 lessons in then they packed up for summer. Start back mid Sept. This is suppose to be a swamp with moss on trees in a sunlit fog.

I kinda like it. I think actually its probably one of the better paintings I have done. Only been at it since June this year and really enjoying myself. Thats all that matters to me.

Hope you like it. Some have seen it before. Just trying to add to your project.

Hi

Thanks Alan, Holly, and Kathy for the comments.

Kathy: Yes post your picture. Cant be as bad as some of mine are!! ;) ;)

I had painted a bit 14 years ago when I had a stretch in the hospital but never continued it once I got home.

I had a lot of help from my teacher at the lessons.
Its also only two colors. Lemon Yellow and Paynes grey. The mix of paynes grey and lemon yellow made a great green but it comes out dark in the lower right corner.

I was shaking like crazy tho doing this with Molly hanging over me. lol. Nervous I was !! ;)

Thanks for the kind words.

Hi Kathy you could have uploaded it to the in progress files but thats ok....it looks like you painted right over the birds....it will be hard to make them stand out now unless you pull some of the color then darken the background and paint in the birds....how does that sound.

Alan, Iris, Dave,

Thanks for your comments on my latest entries.

Yes, Alan, I got the hang of it on the 'Petals' painting, at least. I did have a lot of fun with that one!!!

I am taking your advice on the Shabby Chic painting Alan, and i believe its going to be a keeper, but I need to also figure out what to put on that negative space on the wall.

Thanks all of you for your encouragement!

Oh really nice Alan. I'm a boat and ship fan by the way. I sail radio control 1 meter sailboats. Wife has one too. I have also been known to build them. Radio control type that is. I use to build and fly remote aircraft but they kept turning into Lawn Darts lol :) So switched to boats. They last longer. Great fun.

Really nice clear painting.. Good stuf. I sent you email to addy on your web page about PSP

Thanks Johnnie for your comments that sounds like fun!!

Worked on this off and on all day. Painted almost all of it with a big size 16 brush wet into wet and added a few details at the end with a smaller brush. It was a struggle for me to stay "loose" and I'm not sure I succeeded. I'm afraid my colors aren't as bold as I wanted them to be. (I was hoping for really vibrant colors like Alan gets, guess I was too timid though.)

Anyway, it was fun because it was a new experience for me to paint this way.

Thanks Alan. When you put in your first washes, do you use a light wash to establish color positioning or do you just go in with a strong, mid-range depth of color?

I usually start with about a #3 value wash and try to build up to a #6 or 7. Should I be starting with a stronger first wash?

Am I making any sense to you with this question?

Yes it makes sense I usually go midrange first then add lots of darks to set the tone...not to often people tell me to add more darks lol.....as the darks dry I can even go darker if need be....that way it all blends in nicly...

Coming along nicly....with your tooth brush you can spray a bit of white just where the whale is coming out of the water to look more like mist....make sure the whale is done though....some fine spray would look good with your bigger spray....

Thanks Alan. I will dig through my art supplies and look for my trusted toothbrush. I also dabbled some cobalt blue where the trees will be. I will loosely apply more color to indicate trees. I also added a light wash of whale olor to the water to indicate the part of him beneath the water.

Hey, Alan!

You are so great!
Make me DOOOO things :)
I get it toooo wet and had to use paper towel so that not to "bleed it" all in one color :) Can I leave halo as is on this still life and better try another one?

I love all that you do and you convinced me ?somehow? to try things as you do :)

Alan Cross
08-29-2003, 12:06 AM
Tatjana sure leave that one and do another thats one of the ways I learn do the same thing over till I get it them move on...it would be fun to see the same one done again....go for it! one easy way to improve that one is to deepen the shadows around the fruit so they look like they are sitting on something right now they look like they might float away....or remember that for next time....
Alan :)

kuraga
08-29-2003, 12:20 AM
I wanted to make fruits to float this time - decorative but not completely flat. I canda tired of shadows. It is always easy to do them. I was consentrated on working the fruits themselves. Will try tomorrrow anyway. thanks, see ya :)

Fits the project perfectly, nice bold colors and loosely painted. I especially like that little area at the bottom where the vase and the table meet. Perfect watercolor moment.

This is so loose and swirling in the petals. If it were mine, I would leave it as is. I think the yellow, unless very pale, would be distracting.

Love this YUPO madness-inspired painting! Great abstract feel to it. Yes, YUPO is craze-producing, but look how loosely you have to paint on it! I really like the composition with the smaller shapes at the bottom and the waves emitting from it and rising on a diagonal toward the top.

First, My daily, :D THANK YOU!!! :D too ALL that have commented on my paintings. They've been fun to do. I like this project, its very fun.

Kathy- I love your fish painting, I agree they look like they are a tad ticked (who ate my shirmp?) I like IT!!!

MChew- Oh my! what wonders, You are sooo good.

Kuraga- Colors are bold, some darks slid in around the fruit would look nice, but is good just the way it is. I would have had a mud puddle if I used those colors.

Sue- I like all of your entries, but especially the Yupo one, flower is great too.

Fagan- Nice arrangment, boldness of the roses lends to the soft loosness of the vase.

I am overwhelmed and delighted with the amount of talent that graces this site. Makes everyday a joy to sign on early (and stay all day) and see what new masterpeices you all will create.
