A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Trading Art Cards
Project Leader: judithj
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Would you like to trade art cards with your WetCanvas buddies? Here is your chance. You can trade prints and originals, prints or originals - what ever you like.

Suggested size for art cards: 2 3/8" x 5" on 4" x 6"...paper, card stock or what ever. Please note: this is a suggestion only - you can trade what ever size you like.

Also, please consider putting some information about the art and the artist on the back of your cards just like real trading cards would have. Again, this is just a suggestion.

Any medium is fine so long as you can mail it.

If you are trading prints, please create limited editions. Sign and number each one, and let everyone know how many prints will be made.

PROCESS

Post your Art Trading Cards that are avaliable in the Final Entries section. Or if you prefer, you can just post links that point to the cards you would like to trade in the project discussion forum so we can see what you have.

If someone else has a card that you like, you can trade the one you made for the one you want - you know the way it worked when we were kids - if a trade is agreed upon - the traders can PM each other to exchange addresses, then just mail the cards to each other...

It will be fun to see how many cards we can collect.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=504)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Judith,

I was very excited to participate in trading when it was being discussed on the other thread. I looked forward to this project and promised you that I would participate, however, due to the restrictions placed, I cannot participate after all.

The main problem for me is your requirement that I create limited editions for this project since I am a digital artist and digital art does not produce originals. If I made little cards out of my art work and made them into limited editions, it would ruin all of my current plans for the paintings, as well as my future plans for them, and I would have to turn down the galleries that are interested in them, stop my business in its tracks, and end everything I've been working on, and toward.

I won't do that.

Also, you are very specific as to form and function. I was hoping it would be more informal than that. Sort of like people sitting around at a picnic and trading whatever they had. One person has an antique radio and offers it to the his friend in exchange for a refurbished power saw. The things exchanged aren't alike, but the fun and good will and friendship are what trades like that are all about.

But what you are proposing is very cool too: art cards, sort of like baseball cards, etc. But for the reasons stated above, I won't be able to participate.

I'm sorry that I can't fit into your parameters. I was very much looking forward to it.

:crying:

Adrienne Dear Heart

I wasn't intending to make requirements - just suggestions - you can trade what ever you like - just let folks know the scoop on what you are trading.

I will review what I have written - I thought I called everything suggestions - suggestions for me means they are just suggestions and that you can do what ever you like cause there are no firm and fast requirements...:D

I will review the description and try to figure out how to make it more clear.

Do you have any suggestions (not requirements) on how I can re-word the description to make this more clear?;)

Hope you do decide to participate.

-Judith

Hi Judith,

Thanks for your reply :)

Here's the part from your project description that stopped me in my tracks:

If you are trading prints, please create limited editions. Sign and number each one, and let everyone know how many prints will be made.

That's the part I won't do, but which appears to be a requirement in my case, since no originals exist of my work.

What do you think? Is there a way around this?

What da ya say we change it to:

If you are trading prints, please create either open edition or limited editions. If you are creating limited editions, please sign and number each one, and let everyone know how many prints will be made. If you are creating open edition prints, please let it be known that your print run is unlimited and open.

I will ask a moderator to let me edit the project description.

Adrienne, I am just thinking here - you could do limited editions if you choose to - originals are not required to make a limited # of prints.

For instance, if you made a file and decided to print off only 3 copies and never print any more - that would definitely be a limited edition.

It is all up to you:D

Night Night

PS Mars was amazing this evening.

Cool! I'll go do up a page layout and try to post something to trade soon. New prints take a week to dry, but I can post before then and just include a ready-by date. I'll make it to your specifications size-wize.

Hey, my very fist "baseball" card page layout!!! This is going to be fun :)

No way am I going to ruin the future of any of my paintings that way. Judith, honest, I'm not willing to do limited editions of any kind whatsoever for this trade. :)

Tell me more about Mars. Do you have a telescope? (I have one that I haven't learned to use yet :crying: )

I don't know what it is about night. I seem to work better at night. The mysteries of quantum physics and our existence seem close enough to touch (and paint), even if I don't understand them, when the sun is resting.

Are you a night owl too?

Ok, I've signed up. I've no idea when I'll have something to trade though, so I hope it'll run for a while :)

Hi to all,
Project sounds fun, have to get some card stock and then I'm on it. I have several older drawings and paintings that I will never redo or sell. There just for me and my folder. They range from dragons to landscapes. Pencils to oils. I will also do some new ones for this project.

Hey Adrienne!

I am looking into getting the requirements changed officially - hopefully we can edit projects:D

I am so glad you have joined!

I don't have a telescope but my sweetie has one - a BIG one - we were looking at the ice caps on Mars - it was so cool - I wish I was a night hawk - I say awake as long as I can and nap in the car - it get really cold and damp - but last night was STELLAR - the milky way was very clear and the sky was quite dark. I think that perhaps the fact that we are being urged to conserve power here has helped cut a little light pollution.

If you would like to learn about using your telescope, the best place would be to join an astronomy club - both Eric and I belong to our local astronomy club and all the folks in the club are very enthusiastic and many are VERY knowledgeable and they love helping people learn about the night sky - one of the things on my to do list is to see if I can get some of our astro photographers to donate photos to the wet canvas image library - hope to get that sorted out some time soon - I have a few clients who really need some attention so it may take a little while for me to get my cards up for trade.

Eric and I are playing Civilization again :D We have made it all the way into the middle ages and have not had a war yet!

Looking forward to seeing your stuff up for trade.

Hey there!

We have 7 folks signed up to trade art trading cards - welcome everyone!!!!

Marc - I am really looking forward to seeing your first sparse gesture up here for trade - a quickie... :D

Ksar - welcome - I love dragons and that is something I would love to see about trading for. I had a peek at your profile and we have the same birthday!

Now I got to go get busy getting myself sorted out and making a few cards for trade.

Warmest Regards, judith

Judith: "but last night was STELLAR - the milky way was very clear and the sky was quite dark. I think that perhaps the fact that we are being urged to conserve power here has helped cut a little light pollution."
This reminds me of decades ago. When I was a kid, I used to lie on the grass at night and watch the stars. There were billions and billions of stars, and the sky was like black ink in between.

Now... we not only have major light pollution, but some of the worst air pollution in the United States. Some nights, I can see one star. Probably Venus actually. Most nights, nothing at all. :(

the best place would be to join an astronomy club
That's a good idea. I bet they go up in the mountains to see the stars...

Eric and I are playing Civilization again We have made it all the way into the middle ages and have not had a war yet!
Nicely done! Judith and Eric for pres! :D

Edit: OOPS!!! I forgot you are from Canada. Prime Minister maybe? (Not sure of your gov structure  )

Hey Judith,

I got looking at my packaging, and at some baseball trading cards a friend of mine has, and it got me thinking. I'd prefer not to buy new packaging (which I have to buy in quantity) for this endeavor, but I have packaging that would be ideal for standard size trading cards. Here is a web page for "Topps" where they mention the size. So I've decided that I'll make my cards that size, if that's okay???

http://www.topps.com/SportsCollect/spc_history.html

Let me know if this would be okay with you...

I put my cards in the sleeves that they make for a photo album - I just cut the sleeves up into individuals and I get a nice little package for a 4" x 6"

This is So beautiful Adrienne! I have to get my cards sorted out - I am just going a little bug eyed - had to do a lot of work this weekend - hope to have a card up soon for trads.

You must have a thing for hearts - I will have to do another heart for you to trade with.

Suuurrreee... I could probably go on far longer than you would care to listen.. :D ... I can get obsessed at times.. the card is 4x6 with the inside dimensions following the guidline of 2 3/8x5. There will be information on the back, but currently I'm reading over some of my boy's game and collector cards to see just what I ought to put there... could prove interesting, and might leave that for a surprise....

Thankee!... I spent the day yesterday literally running up and down the stairs from drawing table to computer, waving my little trading card in the air as I went trying to make it dry faster so I could put it in the scanner without it sticking! I will probably spend today working on the strawberries... cross your fingers for me and hope that the gold leaf came out good and I don't have to do another layer... and I will most certainly let you know when it's finished...

I'd love to trade with you Trin!!! I feel that because mine are prints, and yours are originals, I should offer more than one in trade for one of yours. I'll be adding some more in the next few days; please let me know if you like any of them. Also, I'm eager to see your second one... I have a feeling I might like it even better than the first! Today though, I'm about 3/4 of the way done with a Trading Card carrying a detail from "Grace" which was that flower I did with the same sparse liquid ink that you liked. (When you saw it as a WIP it was called "Bendy's Weed.") So it'll be up this afternoon, if I can stay awake. Otherwise, later tonight. I think you liked that one, but I can't remember for sure???

Yes, that's Windy. (Good job to figure out what the image was :) ) Here's a link to the full pic. It's down at the very bottom, 2nd to last I think:

Absolutely! As long as I can have the detail from "Hope"... and I don't have a problem with trading one for one, even if yours is a print... to be honest, I've used that wren and the strawberries in several different manuscripts in the past, so it's kinda like a print...:cat:

... and thank you for the kudos... I do so enjoy the odd form of painting I do, and it's always nice to hear that someone else likes it too.

Yippers!!! :D :D :D

Now for the details. My prints take a LONG time to dry. I give all of them at least a week. But this one, because of the large dark area, will need longer. Therefore, I can't cut it and mail it until September 6 or 7. Is that okay? If that's okay with you, then we can PM each other with our addies.

Thank you Trin. :D I'm a happy camper, and really looking forward to receiving your strawberries and bird!!!

Well now.. that is an interesting question.. I went to your website and had a little looksee.... what wonderful things you have there!... I really liked "Heart's Content", and "Dragon's Joy" and all the colored pencils...  I think I'll more than likely like just about anything you put on a card!

Then it's a deal!.. coolness... I have no problem waiting for the print at all... Does anyone know if we can mark the cards as already traded?... I will PM you with my mailing details!

Thanks! ::bounces in her chair trying to wait patiently for the middle of September::

I'm sorry about the wait Trin

Actually, it is a good thing. Deskjet prints are notorious for fading, but I have a printer that not only has a wider gamut (prints more shades and colors) but has lightfastness that outlasts traditional photo processing methods. So it shouldn't fade in a week like deskjet prints usually start to do :o

As always though, keep out of direct sunlight which will fade pretty much anything. And for longest life, store in a cool, dry, dark place.

Also, the ink is NOT waterproof. (Waterproof inks tend to be duller and have a narrower range of printable colors. Since my artwork is often completely out of gamut (out of range) anyway, I don't use waterproof inks. They don't print my work very well at all.)

So you'll be getting a very good print of "Hope" with high quality and very saturated inks, but it takes longer to dry as a result. I'm excited to be sending it to you!

Trin: "Does anyone know if we can mark the cards as already traded?"
I don't know about this, but I have the opposite problem. I need to mark mine "Still Available! - Open Edition."

Maybe it's like people sitting around trading their baseball cards and schmoozing... someone'll ask Trin if "Strawberries" is still available, and she'll say "no," but offer something else, like she did with Judith earlier. Or they'll ask me if "Hope" is available and I'll say "yes," as long as they're okay with the fact that others have it too.

I can't think of any other way...

Hi folks, I've posted a "Lamentation" Trading Card. This is the painting Marc referred to as the golden tree awhile back. Emotionally, it was very difficult to finish, but I'm glad I did, and it was fun to turn it into a Trading Card. As I mention with the painting, it has surprised me by becoming the most universal among my paintings, at least with my friends, family and acquaintances. I hope you can find yourself in it as well. :)

Good afternoon campers! I worked on this Trading Card part of the day yesterday, and all morning today. Then, just now as I logged on to upload it, I got a breaking news from ABC that relates to it:

Authorities Release Transcripts of Emergency Crews' Final Words on Sept. 11, 2001

I hope, though, that you read my comments about the painting, and see within the lines, the persistence of healing that the title of the image refers to...

Gee Adrienne

I think that the project is going very well. I don't know what that watercolour project is about - perhaps it is a more chatty type of thing....

What type of feedback would you like? About the art? About trading?

When I want to start a conversation I start asking questions.

So how about these questions...

Do you presently have an art collection?
Have you ever thought of art collection as a act of self expression?
What sort of art would you like to collect/trade for?
How/where are you going to exhibit the art trading cards that you collect?
What type of art 'speaks to you' the most profoundly?
Have you ever had a chance to talk to art collectors and find out what motivates them?

OK - here are a few of my answers:

Do you presently have an art collection?
I have a collection of my own paintings - I have them up all over my home. they engage me on a daily basis - I am learning about the life of a work of art - the inspiration and energy it gives to those it lives with.

Have you ever thought of art collection as a act of self expression?
Not till recently. I never thought of it at all till I was trying to develop an understanding of art collectors so I could understand what motivates them. I thought that if I became an art collector, I would understand them better.

Now I am much more aware of the life a work of art has after I am finished creating it. Previously, once a work was done, I lost interest - now a work is continually speaking to me even when I am done making it. I am learning to listen - and like a good book - the art keeps on developing in meaning for me - as I am able to understand stuff more fully from learning from the process of living.

What sort of art would you like to collect/trade for?

I would like to collect stuff that speaks to me in a special way - not something intellectual that I can explain. I am learning that collecting is very personal.

How/where are you going to exhibit the art trading cards that you collect?

Well the 4 x 6 size I suggested is very convenient to exhibit cause you can use all the stuff on the market for exhibiting 4 x 6 photos - you can use photo albums and I have that beautiful little photo box. I cut a photo album sleeve up into individual packets and I have put my little drawings in the packets. I also like this size cause there are so many frames for 4 x 6 on the market - I will be likely framing and exhibiting my art cards in their own little wall space.

What type of art 'speaks to you' the most profoundly?

I want birds cause I have birds - I want dragons cause I am inspired to paint dragons. I am coming to realize how whimsical and even silly things will inspire me to want a work of art. I think that I also like stuff that is spiritual too.

Have you ever had a chance to talk to art collectors and find out what motivates them?

Nope - only had the chance to read about it - I have offered to write a series of article for my local art council celebrating local collectors so I hope to get more insight into the process soon.

Any ways - here are a few cents from me - looking forward to reading your answers.

Warmest Regards, Judith

Judith J: "I think that the project is going very well."
Yes, I think so too. It's been a lot of fun and is challenging me to look at my paintings in new ways. I've especially enjoyed seeing the art from the other participants. This project is bringing together people that wouldn't necessarily meet on Wet Canvas because it is gathering people from all the different forums. I like that, and am inspired by their work.

Judith J: "I have a collection of my own paintings - I have them up all over my home.
I was just talking on another forum about the photographer Eliot Porter. I have a collection of many of his books that I cherish. His work is so evocative of the richness of nature...

Hi u 2

Ya the watercolor forum is a busy place. I've posted there a lot.
It only takes a few minutes for your post to fall off the board. The bold and loose project is hot, everyone is trying to get loosey goosey. Its fun I have a few up in there too.

As far as having an art collection, are you kidding. I have years of it all over the place. Some framed most not.

I have some I will not part with, they are parts of me I can not get rid of, so answer is yes.

I would like to collect the ones that I feel connected with. Cant really describe it.

I have a nice spot that needs some art in it(LOL thats not mine). cards would fit nicely.

Hmm that's a hard one I really have no favorite.

WC is the about as close or as much as I have talked to any kind of artist, much less a collector.

Short and sweet straight to the point, thats me.

Maybe the lack of particpation is due to some not being able to or willing to get paper to print on. I know I dont have the best materials to print high quality cards. I think if we keep at it and get more variety in the entries it will pick up. Holidays are coming.. These mini works of art would be nice to give to co- workers and such.

Adrienne is right about it gathering from different forums, just taking a lil longer than expected maybe.

Ksar, unless you're a digital artist like me, you don't have to worry about printing up a run of your work (unless you want to!). Trin is trading originals of her work. It's all up to each participant whether they want to trade originals or prints. (In my case, I only have the choice to trade prints.) I look forward to seeing your artwork!!!

I would rather print from the original, that way more can have the choice of having a favored card. Like the Clown, it is a second practice painting. The Orig to IT is done on VERY cheap paper in fact a kids sketch book not much thicker than printer paper. The final finished one will be on a quality paper in a lager size and will be sold. It will be very close to the one I have posted but not exactly the same.

I have been planning to get some card stock paper to paint on but finances are limited right now, so I have to wait a lil bit on that.
Sent you a PM about trading

Fort Meyer, what you've offered to do is what has moved me and touched my heart. The result is not important in the greater scheme of things...

Perhaps if it is too difficult right now because of your wrist, it will become possible at a later date -- or perhaps not. Either way, your thoughts and intent and good will have touched Windy's spirit and reminded me of wonderful memories with Windy, spooking each other in the field and watching him graze for dandelions and milk thistles.

"Maybe you should wait?"
I was thinking I'd just send along a little care package for your wrist that just by coincidence would have the Adrift cards in it (when they're both dry). That's all it has to be is a care package, like I'd send anyone under the weather... nothing required in return...

Would that be all right?

You don't know how much I appreciate your offer of time to accommodate my mending wrist. I will use it only if I am not satisfied with results. This one has to be as perfect as I can make it.

Spirit, is a lot of help to me. I very occasionally go out into the pasture and beat up on a golf ball. Spirit always puts her nose down and sniffs the ball, and noses it to a different position. She will keep snorting at it, keeping her head in the way of my hitting it with the club. Sometimes I can hit a ball a ways out to the side, and when she goes after it, I can get a practice shot off!

It sounds like you and Windy had a special relationship. How long were you privileged to have him?

She sounds like an incredible friend; true blue. And a wonderful sense of joy and humor :) And, hey, I bet she has a bit of shaman in her. I've never met a horse that didn't. If anyone can help your wrist gradually mend and flex, it's Spirit.

Unfortunately, Strawberries is already gone, and all my cards are originals. I do, however have more on the drawing table and will be posting them hopefully soon... perhaps there will be something there you will like as well as Strawberries, and we can make a trade then?

Sincerely,
Trin

Hiya Ksar,

Thanks for your generous words :)

"Of course I will trade, when will it be dry? I have to get more photo paper too. Oh pick 1 other, besides the Flag."
Which of mine would you like? I added a "Status" line at the top of my comments on every trading card. All but three of them are dry (two will be dry tomorrow and the last one on Monday).

I look forward to trading with you again and I'm very grateful that you have more than one of the flags available :) :D :) It is very special.

This project is a lot of fun :)

Oh my!!! You're here :) :) :)

I'd love to trade you for this incredible image, if there's anything of mine that interests you...

I'm so glad you entered the project, even if you don't wish to trade with me. Your work is very compelling. I wish you great success with your birds of prey.

Actually, I think this is wonderful and fits really well with this project. The only thing that puts me off a little is the color of his hair -- kinda green. And maybe the length of her index finger. But I love their expressions together, and her hair is incredible. I think her hair could be a stand-alone abstract painting it is so gorgeous.

I hope you'll make a bunch more of these and post them for us to choose from :)

Oh Adrienne nice to see you again! ;)

Thank you so much, you're always so nice to me :) I was rather nervous for a time on reactions, but so far so good, eh? And now that you mention it, i do see those flaws, thank you for your guidance

Hi,
I joined the art trading cards forum and have just gotten around to getting some cards printed off to the degree that I like them. I have uploaded a progress image in the files and need to write the artist profile for the back.

I will be ready to trade these in the next few days.
(Barring no more interference from children, sickness and general life!!!!) These are a first try for me.

I have printed off the main image onto a flecked paper which I feel captures the spirit of the original that is on a very rough grainey paper.
