i use to walk my dog Chico across the street from my apartment in the bronx. the deeper we got into those woods, the more it seemed like a whole other world.

no matter the season, he and i would explore every hill, sing songs no one would ever hear or that i cared to admit that i knew. it must have seemed like his own private world if i were his size, never ending, always something new, and me beside him.

i should explain that Chico was a mexican poodle mix, we'd flown to new york to be ours... do you think dogs speak different languages? if so Chico knew spanish, english and filipino. i guess "up" is universal? or maybe he knew when we'd go back to "his world", because he never minded the leash i put around his neck. well not in anyway i knew...

not that he never didn't try to scare me to death. does anyone know the velocity of a dog that has to pee vs. a 4 lane cross of speeding cars? let me tell you, that dog was not obedient if he knew he could run across to that park, inside the park he never left my side, but to get there was a whole other story.

i miss him which i guess you can tell, that was a whole other life ago, some 23 years and he's been gone at least a dozen years. if i had my way i would have buried him back there, he would have liked being back... i think he thought my backyard in long island was too small, much too small for a dog his size...

What a beautiful tribute to a good friend.........makes me want to cry :( There is no better love in the world as that unconditional adoration of a pet friend.

Thank you everyone for your kindness... I should tell you that I haven't thought of him in years, but yesterday Diane and I were talking about "woods" in general, and that park came back to my memory, and ofcourse my best friend who always took me there... this is Chico :D

I've often wondered if dogs are angels without wings. :)

This was lovely. Thank you for sharing it.
