First of a new series on kids.

Sketched this up last night, it's charcoal (for now) on canvas, 116x73 cm (about 46x29 inches). Might call it "mischief", we'll see. Will throw some oils on this tonight.

The teeth aren't right but I'll worry about that when I get to it with the brush. See anything else that looks a bit wonky???

Nicely laid out drawing. Other than the teeth, I don't see any more wonkies. It's good to watch you work; this will be interesting.

No Damn you! :D
Looking good so far.

I LOVE it, James. Of course, I love children and can see the horns forming on this one even in the WIP.

You know, James, had you not mentioned that the teeth were off, I would've assumed he was biting his lower lip - you know how children do that (especially little boys), when they are "up to something" ;)

I look forward to watching this grow up. :) Thanks for sharing.

The only thing wonky - and this is subjective of course - is the top of the head cut off so abruptly.

May be intentional but often, especially with portraits/head shots, it tends to look like the artist failed to "guage", started at the bottom and ran out of space at the top of the head.

Take with a grain of salt and a quick morning dip in the pristine Seine.

I like the way you map out the drawing before painting. Look forward to seeing the finished work :D:)

Heheh Artdude, it's really just a case of a guy knowing his limitations... whenever I don't plan out the composition and the forms, and just try to wing it, it turns into a major disaster!! :D Anyway, I have a lot of fun with the line drawing, I love all those curves and shapes that turn into something bigger...

Aurora... thank you. I think I get as many kicks out of working out the line drawing as I do actually painting... it certainly comes easier :D

Keith heheh, praise indeed, thank you :)

Tam... oh yeah, this one's definitely earned his horns! Actually I think he was biting his lip, but it's gonna be hard to get it to look just right; I'll have to get him to pose for me when I get to the mouth...

Mame, thanks for your comment, I probably still don't take enough care in choosing how to "frame" my subject. For better or for worse it was a deliberate choice on my part to close in on the face and, um, chop off the scalp of my youngest born! Actually, originally I was in even closer, but decided he really looked a bit odd without a chin. ;)

Had a bit of time this afternoon to get started...

I think photoshop has fuffed up the yellows, but I'll look at that later. Must run now make dinner for the boys. See ya!

love that yellow: it looks like the sun hitting the grass after a hard rain - all emeraldy. This is going to be fun to watch.

You say he has earned his horns...your son?

With the boys here and it being hols 'n all, there doesn't seem to be any time for painting. Managed to get a couple of hours in this afternoon though...

Yep, Tam, this is son number two, Norman. :)

I had wondered what happened. This is going to be terrific, James. So is son no. one jealous at all?!

(has two children albeit they are almost 19 & 21 now, but are STILL jealous of one another re: parental attention)

Hiya, well there was already one of Piers (son number one) a few years ago. I can't find a proper photo of it, but in this pic it's the purple-y one top-right.

And anyway the next one's going to be of Piers...

Funny thing is though, they're both in a bit of a self-concious phase, and have been actively vetting what they do and don't want painted! *sigh* Norman is currently not too keen on this one, and has decided it isn't him!

Norman is 8, Piers is nearly 12.

I got in a little extra painting time after the kids went to bed...

... but now it's v late and I'm off to bed too! Tomorrow I think we're going to the Pompidou Centre, see the Jacques Henri Lartigue exhibition.......

I really like the light/shadows on Piers. Not sure if it's moonlight or sunlight. But I prefer to think the former.

Norman is at 'that' age. He will be fine just don't stop!! lol

It's looking great James!! Watching and waiting.

Your worried about teeth?!
