View Full Version : Pirate of the Caribbean~ Johnny Depp
I'm practising here for portraiture work... need to get my hand back in... This is as it stood this afternoon, but I've progressed a lot more since these pics, but didn't want to take a flash pic and it's too big to scan... about 16x12 inches black Art Spectrum Oil pastels... I'm really enjoying this one and excited about how it's turning out.

Oooh those eyeballs look stark don't they.... but I assure you they are not that white... no white used there at all...Darn dig cams :)
those lips!!! pursed just so!!!! ohh, look over here, Capitan....oh, er, um...where am I????
Geez, Mo...you made him look GOOD! The close up gives me little chill bumps! I like Johnny Depp all right but you've got me looking harder lol! Durn those digicams too for messing with your whites!
Seriously...you do a good portrait...did you do turps at all???
Using a color shaper??? You know I thrive on details! The scarf and beads came out great too!
Hope to see LOTS more portraits!

whites or no, this is absolutely gorgeous.
And I don't even LIKE Johnny Depp!
Jen
Sue... not a lot of turps used here, only the intial laying on of colour.. to fix the colours so to speak...I don't like the colour shapers, I find they lift the pastel rather than blend .. I mostly use kitchen roll folded, paintbrushes a sharp pointed torchon for details ... by that I mean I pick up some pastel colour on the tip of the torchon and then apply it ..... and of course my fingers. ... love using my fingers and getting messy :)...... will post an update tomorrow as it's looking much better now :)

Hi Mo:
WOW excellent work here! My first thought was geez I love this, but maybe a little more pinky color in the whites of the eye balls. I know sometimes these camera don't catch all the color we put into our paintings.
Good Work!
Best,
Kathy:)
Hi Mo, I love this! Wonderful work! I am very curious about how it has turned out! For some reason I love what you have done with the bandana and the beads.
Great job.......hmmmmm.....makes me miss my pastels.....it's been aages....!

Mmmmm....yummy! :D What a great job you are doing....and since I am a fabric freak I can't help but commenting on how beautifully you are handling that turban thingy on his head. WOnderful!
Sandy
Tasty Hubba Bubba morsel Hey? :D:D.... Glad you like him. :)
Thanks everyone for the great compliments.... this is as it stands now... still a fair bit to do, hopefully finish later today... Done some more work on the beads altered his mouth line just a little ....still some more work to do in face area, but mostly it's the hair and all those beads and such to finish... hopefully those eyeballs don't show up so white now, as they don't look that stark for real.... so far about 8 hours work.

Wow Mo! I love this one - I saw the movie and he was yummy in it too. You have caught those lips of his so well - the eyes still look a little white here, but I am sure they are just right on the original.
Won't it be fun doing all those beads!

Mo - thanks for sharing the progression - Loving each and every step I have to say. You really are capturing the feeling of his expression in this piece.
I'll just watch some more and see what magic you reveal.
Now tell me the truth... do you really think you need practice on portraits? I'm not so sure.

This is excellent Mo! You have really become an oil pastel master. I love Johnny Depp ... a great actor and delightfully easy on the eye :)

Amazing, I have no control over pastels, and this makes me babble incoherently in awe.(and not only because it's Johnny Depp!!) Your portraits are amazing, and I hope to see more, even if they are just practice!
Hi folks...Kat.. not seen the movie.. but it's on my shopping list.:)as for the beads.. fun? Yeah:D
Barb.:) Practice yes... I need to know I can paint portraits with oil pastels... this is my first, hopefully not my last:) Thanks for your confidence in me my friend:)
Dawn... Hmmmm I wish I was a bit younger. I'd make him run... think I'd make him run now :D
Hayley... sight for tired eyes:D Thankyou girl:)
Sue... Yes Art spcrum will take a wash, but I'm not that pleased with it... I prefer Sanfix, it has lots of tooth but Sanfix is much better for Op's, that's what I used for my swan.... took loads and loads of layers... far better than Art Spectrum, but this was all I had at this time.
E-J Thanks so much.
Nancy.. thankyou .. hope to make the jewellry better than shown here.:)
banquitania.. Thanks :D
Kathy.. thank you... I will add it, but unframed and not for sale, because of copyright issues. I'm thinking of letting it stand on an easel.
gillyvu.. Thankyou... I've never had that effect on folks before... :D:D
As you can guess I've no update for you... I have done more but it's not finished, I've been so busy today finalising things for Friday, so hopefully tomorrow will finish this and post... thank you everyone for all the wonderful comments, for me and Cap'n Jack too. :D
Mo.:)
Well here he is folks... all done.. Cap'n Jack Sparrow :D
He's off to be displayed on an easel at my exhibition tomorrow and next week. Thank you all for looking and for all the encouragement and good wishes for my first ever exhibiton.

WOW. Usually lurk in the Pastels forum, but had to come out and tell you how much this rocks. Truly is the Cap'n!

Ok, quickie caus' I am not supposed to be here.....This is STUNNING!!! Mo, I don't care any bit for Johnny Depp, but the atmosphere and expression you put in this!! Wonderful. Boy, please do more portraits! At least I can learn from them!
I am totally in love with the way you did those beads. They look stunning. Have you ever thought of doing costume paintings? I once had a 'thing' with Tibetan culture (very interesting and sad history) and the costumes of those people are amazing. I find it too complicated (for now :D) to paint, as it has loads of beads and colours in it. Somehow, the Depp costume reminds me of it. Just a thought.
Mo, all the best at you show.
Gorgeous, Mo (Johnny AND your picture of him, hehe)
Well thank you all ..... Last night I finally went to see the film.....LOL!
Well what a pretty fellow/pirate he is. :D I giggled all the way through the film.... a bit camp?...okay I'm ducking from all you Johnny Depp fans here, but he is sort of pretty.:D.
Seriously... he acted out the part superbly and I fully understand that the limp and wavy arms was the part he was acting.... the other pirates were so ugly and as pirates should be I suppose....... a great film, I thoroughly enjoyed it..... have to say too he was the star at my exhibition... one young girl just gasped, and then sat down for a full ten minutes ogling him... :D
Well I'll lay him to rest now......err... his painting that is. :D
Thanks you all once again.

Hothothot!
Actually you've made him look even better than the movie- he was so silly in that movie! Now in "Chocolat".............grrrr
Seriously, that is one awesome oil pastel!
I am late to the party here. First of all I am in awe of your use of OPs. And being a portrait person myself, I love the skin tones. My favorite part is the scarf. If you think of it let us know how you managed it. It's really really scarf-y for lack of a better word.

HUBBA HUBBA!! I do love a man in long hair!!:D:D:D
Ill take this Pirate anyday,Excellent work MO!!!!!;)
Oh I quite agree, I loved Johnny Depp in that movie - and the picture is wonderful that you painted of him- you don't need the practice- I learned that the hair was a wig by my daughter- left me heartbroken  Of course she thinks 'old people like me' going hubba hubba is sick...my husband wants to know why I am printing this out- why I have to have it in hardcopy. I said it is great pastel work- he says he will go out and look for art in return- see what you started!!!
