View Full Version : Hello - New Artist and pastels
09-15-2012, 01:17 PM
I'm Dee. I'm a late blooming artist :). Anyway
For reasons that no longer themselves seem important
I decided about a month and a half ago to draw
Every day. I was hoping to improve my ability to draw cats and
felt I wasn't too good. On this 'journey' I am finding a new passion.
I'm sort of on overload.
I started in pencils but know a good pastel artist who
I inspires me to try pastels. I need some good
basics though as just trying to paint what I see is
proving to be a challenge without any knowledge of pastel
technique. I am keeping my eye out for courses in my
area but was hoping people could suggest
A) good books
B) good video or online video resources
C) good tutorials
D) anything else I could have missed in A-C
This community is obviously a great resource
itself. If it makes a difference I have started primarily
doing portraits but have also been agonizing
Thanks in advance!!!

hi Theo welcome to the pastel forum. I found that as far as videos go I used artists network.com. you can either buy out right or you can purchase the right to view all of there Videos for 6 months or you can buy all there pastel videos for 6 months they do offer deals at certain times. I would recommend that you demo first as it is important that you have a fast internet connection at least 10 mbs.download speed. there are loads of good books out there also, others will give better info on them. there is also a good tutorial section in here.

Hello Dee, So nice to meet you! Congratulations on drawing every day and finding a new passion! You'll love pastels. I am also starting to love it more and more.
Sooo many amazing pastel artists here on WC! Deborah Secor, the famous and excellent pastel artist, has a blog and free book at http://landscapesinpastel.blogspot.ca/
Also I discovered a few months ago, perhaps you know already, the "Spotlight" in this forum every month, by DAK723 or Don. An excellent and impressive lesson every month written by him, he's the best! I love coming here every day to admire others' works and learn.
Hope to see more of your new art works soon!

Welcome to the dusty area of WC. There is quite a bit of free information out there and a good place to start is ArtistNetwork.tv. You can watch previews of all of their videos and you can see how the pastels are being applied. I subscribe and watch the full length videos quite often. Here is a link to the pastel videos. https://artistsnetwork.tv/c-2-workshops.aspx?fcat=medium&Medium=Pastel
Deborah Secor has a free online book that will be very helpful to you. http://landscapesinpastel.blogspot.ca/ Just scroll down and you will see all the chapters on the left hand side. Deborah has been very generous in sharing her knowledge with us and is very good at explaining things. I highly recommend this book.
There is also a thread started here titled How to Get Started in Soft Pastels. http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392571 There is a lot of info in this thread.
Have you checked out the WC Soft Pastel Learning Center? http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=439 There are pages and pages of demos here. You can paint them step by step.
I hope this helps you out. Have fun learning and painting.

Pastels for the Serious Beginner
The Pastel Book
The Pastelist's Year
Painting with Pastel
If you are willing to do some searching, it's easy enough to find each of these superb books on a used book site, but then, the authors don't receive royalties for their hard work. New, with a discount, is also nice. These are my favorite books about pastel, and the first three were the ones that got me started.
