I have a friend who is encouraging me to paint a Tengu (from the MMORPG Eve Online) in a nebula. I want the nebula to be thick, expansive, multi-layered, and multi-colored. I will be painting it on a 16"x20" canvas I have added a few extra coats of gesso to. I blocked in a ground and attached a sketch of the spaceship to reference it's location in the painting.

A few things I could really use help with:

1. When do I add the spaceship? Should I wait till I have my nebula in place or paint the nebula around the spaceship?

2. Sgraffito stars? painted stars? combination? Anyone have experience painting cosmos?

3. General inputs that may help would be welcomed too.

Thanks.

greensyster (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=953501) has had some success with hubble images

what's the focus, the center of interest going to be? the spaceship or the nebula? one is really intricate detail and one is really intricate depths so i think you'd probably want to lay them both out if they're sharing the stage

Hey La,

They will both be sharing the stage. By "lay them both out" do you mean I should also sketch in my nebula? Also, any suggestion for putting in the stars? I am thinking about attaching small pieces of painters tape with tails that I can grab onto and pull off. Paint a good deal of the painting then pull these off before the paint dries so the ground comes through as the star.

Thanks again!

think of them both as three dimensional
i'd 'sketch' in the space ship
and place the main shape of the nebula with important stars, like a connect the dot thing.
once dry i'd get as many of the loose nebula stuff in, all the wispy
then detail the ship into the nebula

post as you go, sounds fun

I tried transfering the ship today and failed miserably... I will be trying again this weekend using willow charcoal. If that fails, I will be trying to freehand/sketch it in. The nebula I can sketch with willow fairly easy I believe, I will probably have that laid out this weekend too.
