This is from a reference photo by A. V. Zawl in Siena, Italy. The statue in the photo is of stone, rather boring color. I have used Daniel Smith Duochrome color to make the statue look metallic. Sorry that it doesn't show the glow in the scan.
I used Em's (mustcreate) underpainting technique.
Am I done? Comments and critiques welcome.
9 x 12 Arches CP W&N and Daniel Smith paints
Underpainted with Winsor Violet--Em told me I had used too much violet and told me to scrub some out for highlights--lightest places reserved by Masquepen

Started adding color--didn't like it--New Gamboge

Decided to put Duochrome over all the colors on the statue.
Put FUB over pigeon

Duochrome over all of statue--Winsor Green (blue shade) and Alizarin Crimson to make the black on the pigeon

I remember that statue and the pigeons all have learned the trick of drinking from the fountain just like yours is doing! Wish I had thought to take a photo of it.
This looks very good, Lyn. A few highlights on the statue would be good, as Alan suggested.
I really like the way you painted the flowing water and the pigeon. Very nice.

JJ, Duochrome color is a watercolor (or oil) paint put out by Daniel Smith. You can find an explanation of it on the Daniel Smith website. I ordered the desert group. Thanks for looking and commenting!
Alan, Ta!:D
TY, MA!:)
Thank you, Jim, for taking time to look and comment!
Sylvia!:) I thought several people would have seen it-- I'm very pleased with the pigeon and water. On the other hand, I couldn't get the statue to look like the image in my head! LOL But, I enjoyed painting this, and will try it again someday.
Barb, thanks! Your feather demo and your bird paintings helped me with the pigeon.
SouthernSun, TY for looking and commenting! Sorry, I don't have your "real" name down, yet! LOL
I don't exactly know how to put highlights in the statue now that the duochrome is on there. I guess I'll try painting some of the duochrome on a sample piece and play around with that. Of course, in the original the light reflecting off of the metallic copper paint provides highlights.
Thanks, all, for taking time from YOUR painting to look at mine.:)

This is a great composition Lyn. Those duochrome colors are great! I feel the bricks need to be varied in color so the water from the fountain will show up more or some shading on the bricks might work.

Sylvielu, thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I like these duochromes for certain subjects. I thought they would work great w/the statue as I couldn't get the effect I wanted with transparent wc.:)

Great one, Lyn!
I'm not familiar with duochrome either--is it not transparent? Because if it's not, the underpainting won't be as useful....
I LOVE THE WATER!!How did you to it!!!

Great painting, Lyn! I agree about adding a little variety in the brick to bring out the water - at least as far as the scan goes. However, after having seen your work up close and personal, I know you lose a lot in the digital format. Now to find out about that paint.....

Great painting, Lyn. The more I see this underpainting technique, the more I think I should give it a try.
The pigeon turned out really well, and I love the composition! I like the colours that you ended up with.

Kate, the Duochrome is not transparent--I used it because I screwed up the transparent colors!! LOL I did the water with a squiggly (artistic word) line of masquepen to reserve the white, then laid in a watery mix of FUB and BU at angled intervals after removing the mask.:)
TY, Erin, for looking in!! And, you are right, the Duochrome looks much better IRL.
Sylvi, TY for looking in. I had used the underpainting technique once before, and it turned out well with transparent washes of color over it. I just messed the colors up on this, and so hid the underpainting to a degree under the duochrome. The composition is the photographers--I only changed the background by putting in the stonework and plastered wall. The actual fountain sits in a square and the backdrop was a wall of statues, which I think would have been overpowering in a painting.:)

Hi Lyn Excellent! it really looks very nice and very well done. I love the pigeon, one thing maybe i would ad some darks on the statue, just my opinion .
artmom
08-05-2003, 12:01 PM
Thank you, Javier! Darks, hmmmmm. Maybe that's the way to get the highlights mentioned by the others--put some darks in the statue. Good suggestion.:)
BTW, Kate--I've done some experimenting, and the Duochrome is transparent, if you use enough water--LOL Now I find out!

Yes, a **few** well-placed darks will add some highlights. Not familiar w/properties of that Duro paint either, but take your word on it. Pigeon strength doesn't bother me as if overall lighter it would pale w/the statue. Like the brick wall as is. Good job, Artmommy.

Hi Lyn, I love that pigeon!
On the statue yes, some darks will help with form and contrast. Another option is to carefully scrape back a few highlights with the side of a sharp blade. Only problem with that is you can't paint after you scratch the paper surface.

Alan, yes, it was fun! I'm sort of disappointed that I couldn't make it work just with transparent washes--but there's always a next time! TY for looking and commenting.
Fookie-Lyn, thanks for looking and commenting. I learned a lot more than it looks like doing this!! LOL

Lyn, you've done a beautiful job with Em's technique! Congratulations, sis... As I'm late getting to this thread, you already know how to finish it off... I will say that I've lost my highlights many times and end up darkening my darks even more to compensate... I really wish there was a way to show us your paint, because IRL, it's probably stunning!

Char-Sis, :D !
Jan, thank you for looking and commenting!
Well, folk--I scrubbed off the last layer of paint that I put on--tried to add darks, but paper was too absorbent:( . So put much thinner layer of the Duochrome paint on, in three colors instead of just the one. Then, I inked and I am now quite pleased with the result. It is very metallic IRL but much more transparent feeling--I think I have now learned how to utilize the Duochrome paint.
What do you think now?? Critiques and comments always welcome.
BTW, IRL the water shows up much better than on the scan.

Christie, what a compliment! :o I admire Flattwo's work very much. Yes, now that I have learned to use lots of water with the Duochrome I'm going to use it much more. It really looks metallic IRL.
Thanks, JJ, you snuck in while I was posting!:D

Pam, happy you didn't miss the finale--I think I've pulled off a "Pampe save." I very happy with the outcome. BTW, the Duochrome is a Daniel Smith paint and there is a full explanation of it on the Daniel Smith website. I bought the Desert set, and Lapis Lazuli. :)
Em, I didn't get to Siena on my trip to Italy, but I thought you might have seen this fellow.:) Yes, the Duochrome will look good over your underpainting technique now that I've learned the trick to it! Thanks for looking.:)

Hi Artmom
Great painting. I like it both ways. Final tho punches out more to me.
Nice inking there too. I never knew ink and watercolor went together till I messed with the driftwood thing.
Quite pleasing actually.

I really like the ink on this, but I especially like those bricks, too.
Every time I look through the DS catalogue, those duochromes intrigue me. Now, I'll *have* to order some to try.
And I'm going to have to try this purple underpainting too! See what you've done to me? :D

Oh, my, Lyn! What a difference! I can't wait to see this in person. I love the ink - and I bet this just sparkles. There must be something in the water in Scotland.
Now I'm inspired to dig some things out and try inking........
