This is a painting, (a bit rough) of the' Lily Experiment', which consisted of a series of hexagonal 'cans' connected by articulated connections and covered wit tarpaulin type material to form a landing strip. The experiment took place in Lamlash bay in Scotland.
It had arrestor wires at one end , and the Swordfish used RATOG assist takeoff at full operational weight

I can imagine no end of mishaps with that idea!
First bit of a swell would make take off or landing very interesting indeed.

Hi Neil, it worked very well, they even had a high speed launch running up and down creating the swell. It was about 500 ft long and 60ft wide , smaller than a MAC ship. There were plans to make a longer one and have ago with the 'Heavies', but the war ended and stopped it all. I believe they are developing something similar in Japan and elsewhere

Interesting Jim - a heavy on one of those would have been something to see.
