Superb - I know this is about feathers - but that eye is fantastic - and looks deceptively simple to paint - one question - how did you get the white highlight back in the eye? It seems to disappear and then its back - or is it just the photo's?

07-30-2003, 08:03 AM
Dang Barb!! Great WIP! Did you use dry brush for the darker colors of his feathers? Looking great...am anxiously watching! :)

07-30-2003, 08:07 AM
Thank you Ceiliog for looking and commenting......yes the highlight in the eye dissapeared on me so I used my exacto knive to pick it in again.......lol

Thank you Patty for your kind words.....and for looking in.......

This is a pretty impressive demo and if you don't mind, I'd like to use it with my students ( grade 10 ). I always have someone who wants to do birds, often eagles and this would be a great image for them to work through as a learning process.

Thank you Artman and Sue.....

Sue thats fine with me.....go for it....glad it's something you can use.........

WOW !!!

All the accolades have said it better than I can, so I'll merely agree that this is superb.

I don't know whether to be inspired by seeing this, or depressed by realizing that it's orders of magnitude beyond what I can do.

But no matter - thank you for sharing this with us.

Ditto. Enviable value shifts--the 'key' to an excellent work, whether value in color, or value in tone.

Thanks in advance

01-06-2006, 08:58 AM
Beautiful............this is a wonderful painting and I really enjoyed following your progress too.Thank you.

01-06-2006, 09:20 AM
Excellent. Well done. Good likeness but I think you also captured the soul of the bird.

05-27-2006, 10:36 AM
Fantastic eagle my friend. The eye is so realistic...you make it look easy & that is the secret of true skill...making something quite intricate look simple. This is my first ever post in Wet Canvas so hope it comes thru ok. Look forward to viewing more of yr WIP in the future...keep up the good work. ttfn

I'm glad this wonderful demo has been pulled up again so the newcomers since Barb posted this back in 2003 could see it and learn from it. Unfortunately, although Barb checks in now and then, she has begun a business and it pretty much takes up most of her time. I'm sure she will be happy that people are still learning from her demo.

Poodle, since Barb posted this as a demo and used a reference from the Image Library, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to post your painting if you do one.

I absolutely love yr eagle!!! Thanx for showing it stage by stage...yr a very talented lady. Look forward to seeing more of yr work.

This is terrific Barbara the eye of a raptor, completely captivating, a magnificent bird---------------well done-----------Alan

10-30-2006, 09:16 PM
Thank you Barb,
I am a new member glancing through the postings and this really caught my eye. I especially love the third step when the head was still loosely painted but the eye was rivetingly detailed. Wonderful contrast.

11-03-2006, 05:46 AM
i love the painting, but i'd like to know more about your technique, type of brushes you used, etc. is this mostly dry brush, wet on dry, or what? i'd really like to know more about what you did and how you did it.

11-03-2006, 08:32 AM
OH my this is an old thread and for some reason I have not been receiving the responses.....so sorry, not avoiding any of you nice people but haven't been at WC much lately.....But a big THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND WORDS AND FOR LOOKING IN AT AN OLD THREAD.......LOL

And Mudslinger, I just used mostly flat watercolor brushes, sizes 6 and 9 if my memory serves me......and some of it was done wet on wet and there is also some dry brush work. I tend to mix techniques alot in my paintings..... and as always try to finish the eyes in all of my paintings at that give it life so that I can continue on. Hope this helps. Really had to dig deep, as I haven't painted in quite awhile........:crying:

Hi Mohit, glad you like the painting. This is a very old thread, glad to see that people are still looking.

I really have been busy with my grooming buiness, but am trying to find some free time to get back into painting. I really do miss it.

07-20-2010, 05:37 PM
Wow, outstanding, both eye and feathers!

07-20-2010, 08:09 PM
very inspiring WIP! I like how you suggested feathers without getting bogged down in each feather... doing it with washes! I wish i could do that....maybe someday...! :) and of course that eye is amazing! Thanks for showing us the steps

07-26-2010, 02:30 AM
Wonderful! Thanks for the WIP!

Thank you ruffledcat, Kayelny, wtrclrgrl, pjartwc and Scattykat for commenting on my old thread. Haven't had a lot of time to do much painting lately. But trying to get back into it.
