View Full Version : Different Gloss Varnish Effect

Hello there,

I was reading the thread about varnish. I just varnished
two acrylic paintings with gloss varnish, and somehow,
the effect on them is different. One of them looks shiny,
and the other one doesn't. Wonder why? Could it be
because one of them is painted somewhat thicker? I
don't mind the different effects, but it is puzzling me.

Couple of possibilities off the top of my head. If one painting is smoother than than another (less brushmarks, more canvas texture covered by paint etc.) then it can look shinier when varnished since the texture underneath will break up the reflection somewhat.

Another possible cause is if the varnish is slightly thicker on one compared to the other. Up to a point a thinner coat will look slightly less glossy than a thicker coat.

I agree with Einion.
