A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Creepy Crawlies
Project Leader: harmony
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This project has been designed to acknowledge all the less important creatures in the world that are often forgotten. The kind that we often don't even notice of as they fly by, or the ones that make our skin crawl and invoke a fearful response. From beautiful butterflies, to creepy spiders. There are no restrictions on this project, so you can draw them. paint them, sculpt them... anything you like. They can be realistic, abstract.. whatever. The only complusary part of this project is that you have fun and maybe even overcome a phobia or two :P

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=478)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

dude this is my fav or the 3, its soo well done and i can feel the gravity from being upside down... i think its the tones seperating the lower left parts of the wings that really make it feel right.... the other 2 are sweet too... your doing really well at this hard stuff and the one with the asymmetrical wings is still great.. he prolly just flies in circles is all :)

i'll do some pics in the next few days aight.. cya!

Erm, harmony? I don't know if it's possible, but I might need to withdraw from the project... we're packing up to move (getting the key this week!) and I lost track of my sketchbook around 2 am... I think it's in the bottom of... dun dun dun! The big box. -_-;

I'm gonna try and find it, though.

harmony
07-23-2003, 06:43 AM
Hey Meloncollie, it is possible to withdraw but also theres no time limit on when you have to have your work submitted by. The project is unlimited therefore you can submit this week, next week, next month, whatever. If you do decide to withdraw thats fine. Just gotta go to projects and find your projects feature and quit the project, but it would be great if after you move and sort everything out again if you submitted something then :)

Theres no hurry. Do some after you've moved :)

Meloncollie

Oh! Well that's good to know! Thanks! I'll most definitely stay in, and submit something when I unbury my sketchbook. :D

Thanks all for the compliments. As for pouring the background, I first applied frisket to the butterfly and flower, then wet the background area and poured the paint from small squirt type bottles, let it dry, then removed the frisket and painted the flower and butterfly. One of my first wc's but still my favorite !

Sorry it took so long to reply! I had shoulder surgery and am on the mend.
The click beetles were on a tree in my yard that my son cut down for me as it had died ... white birch. We were surprised at the size of these buggers! But he was interesting and posed for me! I have an Olympus C-700 UZ camera.
Thanks for the encouragement! I like creepy crawlies ... at a distance!

Thanks Harmony,

I don't know..... Something just isn't right. Maybe the shape of the wings??? I am going to work the background some more (it is a bit inconsistent near the bug) and see if that helps.

Talk to you later

harmony
07-29-2003, 08:03 AM
I think the wings are good... realistically shaped. The background looks great but possibly the fact that its darker near the bug than elsewhere could be bothering you.

I guess this is what an artist does at a paint on location event when she can't draw!! We visited the Woodcock Dam area in Pennsylvania and while others painted ... I photographed! But I took a zillion digital photos trying to get this and the next entry to be still enough to keep! It was interesting to see how God designed the spider here to camoflage so the little pine satyr butterfly didn't see it until it was too late! Poor thing! But spiders have to eat too ... I have to remind myself of this!

harmony
07-29-2003, 08:56 AM
aww no.... that mean spider. Its gonna kill the butterfly. Probably too late. It would have gone to insect heaven by now. But what a great shot that is. Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

I found this cute little moth flitting all over the pink bee-balm and was so excited to have him stick around long enough to get any photos of him ... let alone the 100+ I took! But as you can imagine ...HE IS FAST!!! I have some others that are clearer but you can't see his wings at all! So this is the one I chose to share. The first time I saw one of these little guys I was thinking I had seen the world's smallest hummingbird! LOL! I was mesmerized! This is the first time I had a camera in hand! I don't have a book to give his proper name but I know he is a moth!

Petdevils and Harmony, Sorry to take so long. Thanks for the interest in my entry even though I cheated since the butterfly is not really the subject. Here's the whole thing (17"x22"). It started as just a watercolor of barrels. I was working on an acrylic at the same time and had just wiped some freshly placed paint from my acrylic (as one can do). Without thinking I tried the same with my watercolor and made a large, cat-shaped, smear... and so the (pastel) cat was born. I added the butterfly to give the cat something to do.

Thank you lisilk and Harmony for your comments on my photos! I felt I "was" at the right place at the right time! Kinda has me excited still! I went to the book store to find a book on moths and I cannot find one that looks just like my little hummer! The closest comes to looking like one that is found only in a small area in Austrailia! I am supposing he is really a "Hummingbird Moth" or "Common Clearwing" (Hemaris thysbe) and their pictures are just not as definitive! ti was fun!

These are both very cool renditions of spiderwebs PD, and I dunno if maybe I'm the only one, but I really like the one with a bit of colour best. Don't be so hard on yourself either... I've never attempted a spider web in my life but I'm pretty sure yours are far better than any attempt i do have :P Which reminds me... I really need to do some new entries of my own.

Thanks for your entry Scarlett and this is quite an unusual bug to have come out of your garden ;) I've never seen one of these before. Do you have any idea what it is?

Just want to thank everyone so far for their wonderful entries. I have been ill lately and havent been feeling too creative for that reason. I am certainly behind in my own artistic creations but as soon as I'm feeling 100%, I certainly must produce a few more creepy crawlies of my own :) Keep them coming everyone

Harmony ... I hope you are feeling better soon! I know how hard it is to function normally when you are ill. Get well!

Ok, finally an entry that really does make my skin crawl and I don't even have a spider phobia. I pity anyone who does that looks at this. This photo is way too close for comfort lol But how spectacular the spider and the web look against the black night sky.

lol Well I'm glad you did manage to get both these photos to share with us. Maybe someone will be able to identify the orange critter for us. Seeing all these fantastic photos makes me want to go outside with my crappy camera and try my luck with some close ups. I can't wait till I can afford a really good camera but thats a long time coming :cat:

I have seen some great art with old cameras. I mean really old and pin hole cameras. I worked with some kids and we made pin hole cameras and some of their stuff was awesome. So get that crappy camera out and tell it who is boss. LOL.:D :D :cat:

I have no idea what a pin hole camera is (me= totally clueless) but you've certainly inspired me. Theres a friendly peacock wondering through my yard most days waiting for a free feed... he's sure to be my prime target first up ;) Then maybe some bugs for this thread :D

Harmony, I'm glad you liked it! ;) I spent the better part of 30 minutes trying to get a good shot of this guy, fiddling around with the lighting. Then I scared him, and had to turn ALL the lights off for a few minutes to get him to come out of his protective crouch....I had to finally get right up close and personal with him, and pray he didn't have a taste for people...lol.

lol Well you certainly were brave. I dont think I'd go into my backyard at night if I had creatures like that floating around in the air. I hate running into cobwebs at the best of times, but usually they don't have something that big sitting in them around here :o

Ok Harmony you said you were going to take a picture of that peacock you know he is proably after some bugs and creepy crawlers so if you follow him around you might get some I want to see both Hope you are feeling better

Karen, I think I am finally well again and the painters have finished painting our house. I've been hiding inside for about 2 weeks for that reason, but I'll now be free to go take some peacock photos and hopefully he will find me some bugs that are willing to pose also ;)

I love the slug photo! My SIL is deathly afraid of slugs, and I love to torment her with them..lol. This photo would probably cause a fainting spell..

I recently bought a ceramic snail for my garden ... all one color ... and my grandaughter was appalled at the thought that someone might think a slug as she called it , neat! But my daughter informs me that they carry disease in Central America and are thought of as very dirty bugs ... as bad as cockroaches! So maybe that is why your sister hates them so much!

This is one that I have uploaded before - but it fits in so well with the thread that I thought I would cheat a little and include it while I am getting a brand new one ready

Welcome to the Projects ! Beware...you will become as addicted as the rest of us.

This is a great start. I love the movement in the graphite work, the moth just pops right off the screen. I am a big fan of black and white work with just a splash of color.

Cheers,

Li

I am becoming a big fan of your work Pete and this is another beauty, still think they have that Asian feeling. I think it's the muted colors and your sense of composition.

Thanks for adding it. The colours look fantastic. It inspires me to go do some more cp drawings myself :)
