I want to make some gritty priming on cardboard to use for pastel paintings. I wonder if marble dust and matte acrylic medium will do the job? Has anyone done this (besides Kitty Wallis, who is probably not reading this thread today...:cat: ) Thank you in advance for your assistance!

yes. I have done this. The amount of grittiness you get depends on the amount of marble dust you use in the medium. Test this on some small boards, and see which quantity you prefer....ifyou make notes about the amount of marble dust you used viz a viz the medium, it will help. For example, 2 teaspoons to acrylic to half a teaspoon of marble dust, compared to 2 teaspoons of acrylic to a whole teaspoon of dust, etc.
It makes an excellent surface. You may also like to try more than one coat, and some people even sand between coats.

I wouldn't coat cardboard! Use rag mat board or something that isn't highly acidic.
