I still need to fix values and do a bunch of tweaks -- and finish painting :)
This is a response to my last painting not having a clear COI.
Acrylic, 60 X 80 cm (23.5 X 31.5 inches)

Wonderful so far Mary! My only crit is the baby's face and arm on the right, my eye keeps going there for some reason, not sure why? Maybe his arm blends in too much with the pink girl in front of him, his head looks almost as if it's not attached to anything. The man on the distant left bending forward carrying a pack on his back seems to merge with the grey area in front of him, perhaps some definition / dark tones here would separate him a bit. Also the man in the middle's hat seems to continue and be attached to the girls trousers in the distance. As you said, it's not finished yet and you are adding more value variations. I can't see much else, just my opinion, I love the atmosphere and relaxed feeling you have created, lovely variety of people, colour and figure positions, really a very charming painting. Well done. Cheers. =)) Debs.

The baby was the first thing I noticed, too. I thought it was just a head with no body, then I realized it was a baby. Maybe his head is a little too big? I like the rest of it.

Perceptions are a strange thing,i didn't notice the baby ,the first thing i saw was the yellow umbrella.
I think i would wait until you have done this "I still need to fix values and do a bunch of tweaks" then have another look.
I think it is great:)

I didn't notice the baby either. At first it seemed like his positioning was that of over the shoulder. Now it seems he is strapped to the back. If that's the case, it doesn't read right. None of his body is showing and he somehow wouldn't seem to fit.
Love this bustling scene and composition. I think you've captured it very well!

I really appreciate these suggestions! Now to decide if I should move the baby and his mom over ....

Beautiful painting full of movement and narrative.
I noticed the child on right as well. The yellow umbrella grabs the COI but the person is lost. I would suggest making the COI persons features darker so he grabs attention - I think then the child will be lost in all the other activity. Hope that helps. Arnie

Beautiful and dynamic art... Catching such activities on a painting should have been a challenging one...

now to get rid of that baby's sunburn
Personally I like the first version, with the darkening of the girl's legs so the person's hat stands out more (good call). Noticed the yellow umbrella first and thought the figure yet unfinished because it is a work in progress and you are still tweaking. For me the lightest light is there (at umbrella lady), but the darkest dark is at the edge of your painting supporting the baby and also behind the baby in the shadow of the girl's dark pants. I thought the baby fine as he was. Find the tall man standing in the middle of the piece, thus far, looks like a tourist; somewhat Caucasian in appearance. I'm a bit confused by the light direction though it is a bustling busy place and light could be bouncing off this that and everything.
This is going to be fabulous when done. Much to look at and my eyes move throughout the piece. The people are engaging, have me wondering about them. The figures and gestures are very well done. Looking forward to seeing how you finish.

Looking good after changes. The last photo seems to have less contrast on the left side - take it thats the photo. Fix the sunburn and I'd call it done:thumbsup: Arnie
