View Full Version : And the next sketch is ......
07-21-2012, 08:14 AM
Over on the photography forum they've got a fun thread going (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=421600)
They post a photo that references the previous link and then give a subject for the following person to show. The idea is that people can dredge through old work to find a suitable image.
No time limit - it can go on until people become bored.
Does anyone fancy doing it here? but with sketches/paintings?

OK, so this subject is supposed to be "cozy".
This is from my sketchbook and drawn in 1996. It was done in my son's third floor walk-up in Philadelphia. He lived there while working on his doctorate at Drexel. Seems so long ago. I always thought it was a cozy place.

Julie, I have shot a bunch of photos of my sketches to have on hand. Things do move fast here...

12-29-2012, 07:27 PM
maryinasia: Rembrant! One of our Gurus! Nice trip!
Joan T: such a quaint and lovely sketch/wash of the little church.
Vivien: great gestural qualities of your much loved daughter-your use of sepia gives such warmth too.
Deborah: beautiful nose/profile-so fine!
Julie: Because it is so hard to keep up here, I may be breaking some rules? However, I'm posting a sketch on the subject a few posts back: "and the next sketch is one of the earliest ones you still have". This may not be the very earliest one in my "archives" (I could dig through some old portfolios and find some) , however it is handy in one of my sketchbooks from the late 1960's (does anyone besides me remember the 60's?):
"The Artist's Room"
8 1/2" X 11"
on sketchbook page
so, back to Deborah's last request for "the next sketch is":
breakfast/ brunch (I'm hungry!)

love it - the resident tiger, here illicitly having a drink from a jug, sketched from life on the ipad, so a very quick drawing.
Deborah was that drawing of your grandaughter from life? it's lovely and if from life I'm doubly impressed!
It's really nice to see some new people joining in - welcome to all of you :)

01-04-2013, 10:03 AM
love these sketches!
01-04-2013, 01:14 PM
maryinasia: Great rhythm in the sketch of the dancers! The color sketch done for your mother is a little gem-I bet she loves it.
Deborah: Beautiful color in your Easter sun rise celebration! and the "looking up" of your infant study is certainly an interesting perspective that you pull-off just right.
Jacquie: Your equine studies are so well done!
Rocket Jones: Your early ATC card is charmingly allegorical!
Vivien: Love the "bull's eye" on the cat's hip!
and here's a sketch of myself done while not looking in a morror:
"Precise" pen on sketchbook page

My favorite subject? Wow--easy...
Next: an art making tool of any kind
01-04-2013, 07:42 PM
Wow, Deborah, these are so comprehensive. You've shown depth and great perspective in these simple compositional studies. I can see why this is your favorite subject. I love the mountains too! I just visited your web page and see that you certainly "know" this subject. Beautiful creations!
01-04-2013, 08:22 PM

and love the landscape thumbnails!
01-05-2013, 10:45 AM
this was done from a photo I took at an urban park
the next sketch is of anything that is both a noun and a verb

Wow! So many beautiful sketches here...
01-08-2013, 09:36 AM
Love the simplicity of your sky and mountain, Mary. It's elegant and expressive.
Something I don't usually draw: storks (from a challenge a few years back.)
Next: an interior space
01-08-2013, 09:57 PM
an interior sketch
next sketch: animals
01-08-2013, 11:46 PM
was that a vacation sketch? love it
Here's a koala at the zoo -- my camera ran out of battery, so I sketched it.
the next sketch is more animals
01-09-2013, 12:58 AM
more animals. . .
There are lots of these around where I live now. . . they are so fun to watch.
Next subject: around the house
01-09-2013, 02:46 AM
I love seeing these sketches! I'll try to participate if I can.
I'm still planning my "transportation" sketch from several weeks ago. :)
01-09-2013, 05:44 AM
At last, one I have for around the house, 'rubbish'.
The next sketch: something wild.
01-09-2013, 04:57 PM

next another wild
01-09-2013, 08:07 PM
01-09-2013, 09:17 PM
oil pastel play
the next sketch is tame, or perhaps deceptively tame
01-10-2013, 05:09 PM
Nice work, everyone! Love the koala, Mary. The roadrunners are frequent visitors where I am, too, Rainy. You got the all-out fierceness when on the hunt! Vivien, the wild sea is marvelous!! Rich colors. And the hippos are wild, Mary!
Ah yes, this might work for "tame or perhaps deceptively tame..." :wink2:
01-10-2013, 08:01 PM
the next sketch is evening or night
01-10-2013, 08:35 PM
Wow, Mary, nice movement.
Next: your breakfast.... (here's a chance to sketch what's right in front of you!)
01-11-2013, 12:46 AM
I like the tree, Deborah.
Mary, that's a beautiful morning painting. What medium did you use?
Great sketches, everyone. You are all so fast I'm getting dizzy.
01-11-2013, 01:00 AM
thanks! oil pastel.
Love the tree, Deborah. How big is the painting?
01-11-2013, 09:34 AM
Thanks. It's an ATC, 2.5" x 3.5", gouache. I gave it to a friend last Christmas. :D
Next: your breakfast.... (here's a chance to sketch what's right in front of you!)
01-11-2013, 10:58 AM
wow, that is a great atc of the snowy tree!! Love that one. beautiful
01-13-2013, 10:25 PM
well, I didn't sketch it today, but I did have an apple for a mid-morning snack today
the next sketch was done while watching TV or listening to music :)
01-14-2013, 07:54 AM
That is lovely, Mary!!!
01-14-2013, 12:53 PM
This was done while watching tv - not of the tv but memories of the gorgeous sunset that night, coming home.
Done using the iPastels app on the iPad.
Next picture ..... Another sunset.
01-14-2013, 01:02 PM
OK also done on the ipad:)
Next sketch snow scene

the next sketch is fire :)
01-15-2013, 12:13 PM
Mary, I love that painting! so expressive but minimal. Nice.
Not a sketch, but a painting of the fires in San Diego a few years back.
01-15-2013, 03:34 PM
Love this one!
01-15-2013, 03:39 PM
My water image
Next image .... Lets have water again
01-15-2013, 06:27 PM
So many wonderful sketches and paintings here. This is such an awesome thread to visit.
01-15-2013, 06:47 PM
Such enjoyable and interesting creations always posted here. My kudos to everyone! I really enjoy this forum.
"Next image .... Lets have water again" (as requested by vivien):
The water in this image is pouring from a jug in a garden at the Hotel Villa River in San Miquel de Allende, Mexico. The pool is in a lovely garden at the hotel. Every evening before dinner, my companions and I would enjoy drinks in the garden and most evenings I would sketch while we visited and experienced the environment. I was there about four years ago, so this image was drawn then.
graphite on sketchbook page
and the next sketch is: arichitectural
01-15-2013, 09:03 PM
great sketches. . . esp. liked the one of the SD fires as I lived there during those! Scary. A wonderful depiction of that.
01-15-2013, 09:40 PM
Vivien, I really love that beach one! So simple and elegant.
Thanks, Rainy. :)
Steven, love the tropical look.
Okay, architectural....not my strong suit but I have this from my sketch journal. It's a RIL favorite, somewhere in Europe, I expect. A small sketch, about 2.5" x 4.5", in gouache.
Next: free for all--post WHATEVER SKETCH YOU WANT TO SHARE!! (copout :clear: )
01-15-2013, 10:37 PM
Whatever you want to share...
Finally one I am ready for! Thanks, Deborah.
The "Norman A. McDonald", a derelict boat that sunk near the dock after a storm. Sketched from life from the dock above.
And the next sketch is... trees.
01-15-2013, 10:55 PM
love all these sketches and paintings!
01-16-2013, 12:27 AM
Great architectural Deborah
Cool sketch of the ship wreck Philip
I have a tree......
And the next sketch is... hand/s
01-16-2013, 02:45 AM
these hands drove me crazy!
the next sketch is also hand/hands
01-16-2013, 11:19 PM
Well, they look lovely those hands Mary!!
Here are mine...
Next are .... mountains!!
01-16-2013, 11:36 PM
Love the scale you created, Jenny! And Mary, the hands look great. They ARE hard, aren't they?
Mountains. I was working up some sketches for paintings, as you can see.
01-17-2013, 04:57 PM
Nice thumbnails, Deborah! You're so professional!
I really like both hands pictures, the second one is very creative; I wonder what the story behind it is...
Love the colours on the tree, Jacqui! No lollipop trees in your book! ;)
When I hear the word 'peace', the symbol I think of is a dove and twig (natch!). The closest thing I have to that is a little bird done in my new Epsilon.
The next sketch is humorous (and comes with an explanation if necessary:) ).
01-17-2013, 08:21 PM
01-17-2013, 08:38 PM
01-17-2013, 09:08 PM
Those poor children... and that beast looking so very smug...
What medium did you use to do this and what size and on what substrate... just curious.
01-17-2013, 09:32 PM
Thanks! Something about water buffaloes is just funny.
The children here often lead the water buffalo out to graze.... they can play while he's grazing, after they harvest plants to take home for the pigs to eat.
about 6 1/2 X 9 inches, oil pastel on paper
01-17-2013, 09:36 PM
Mary, the look! My mare used to look at me like that after she had dumped me off her back in the dust, as if to say, 'Why did you get off?'
another humorous, of a different sort
I've always enjoyed blind contour drawing but this one amuses me. The figure was just walking down the street but this contour suggests all kinds of things! Anyway, I'm easily amused...
Next: another free for all--post a sketch you LIKE
01-17-2013, 11:57 PM
This one is great Deborah, looks like she is sashaying down the street full of attitude.
For me this is an oldie but a goodie. I am still really pleased with how it turned out.
And the next sketch is.... makes you smile
01-18-2013, 02:11 PM
Makes me smile
Next sketch: expensive
01-18-2013, 03:00 PM
Aw, Jacqui, what a charming drawing!
And Joan...this makes me smile and melt. :D
01-20-2013, 09:15 AM
precious pics! these skirts are very expensive, selling for hundreds of dollars -- first they shear the sheep, then spin the wool by hand, then weave by hand, then pleat by hand...
the next sketch is of something/someone that is often within 50 feet (17 meters) of your home
01-20-2013, 11:08 AM
They are usually in blossom most of the year in our garden.
The next sketch is something else in the garden.
01-20-2013, 11:12 AM
More of something else in your garden.
01-20-2013, 08:16 PM
01-21-2013, 07:10 PM
Great art everyone! This is the most "fun" page in all of WetCanvas!!
As Eileen has requested:
"More of something else in your garden."
This one may be a bit of a surprise, however it was in my garden.
india ink (and some water for wash)
on sketchbook page
8 1/2" X 11"
and the next sketch is something that grows from the ground
01-22-2013, 08:11 AM
another oil pastel:
the next sketch has a background that almost looks abstract :)
01-22-2013, 07:43 PM
Mary, your flowering tree is gorgeous!!
"the next sketch has a background that almost looks abstract"
I did this last summer. It is a mixed media sketch using graphite, wax crayon, acrylic wash and felt marker
18" X 24" on paper
and the next sketch is something surreal
01-22-2013, 07:54 PM
beautiful flowers and background!
01-22-2013, 10:40 PM
Wow, love the feathers and flowers.
(As surreal as I get anyway! :clear: with apologies to Magritte!)
01-23-2013, 01:19 AM
love the "surreal"!
the next sketch is animal eyes
01-23-2013, 04:04 AM
A portrait of my daughter"s cat , detail.
Some great images being shown :). The eyes in that are really compelling maryinasia, a lovely portrait with a deft touch.
Next image ..... Dark. ...... Interpret it as you will
01-23-2013, 07:12 AM
beautiful painting, but it looks like the cat ran out of it :)
01-23-2013, 08:39 AM
ooops that the wretched overwriting thing again! And I hadn't double posted today either :(
here it is
it's a coloured pencil drawing
Next image ..... Dark. ...... Interpret it as you will
01-23-2013, 09:14 AM
oh, love this cat!
01-24-2013, 03:48 PM
Vivien, I think the one with the words is exciting! The cat is marvelous, however.
"A Little Shady" ATC (2.5" x 3.5"), gouache
I seem to personify apples when I paint them...
Next: something old, something new, something borrowed or something blue
01-25-2013, 04:15 AM
An old sketch of an old tree.
now something blue or new or borrowed.
01-25-2013, 04:31 AM
Ok something blue. An old drawing of an artichoke flower.
Their textures, shape and colour were wonderful to draw.
Next ..... Shall we go with either the something new or borrowed to finish that theme?
01-25-2013, 09:48 AM
borrowed from Van Gogh :) very mixed media
so, the next sketch is something new? or a new sketch?
01-25-2013, 11:15 AM
Oh sugar! I forgot I'd added one here today! The artichoke has become a snow scene ... My fault, sorry. I added it to the iPad thread and it made it change this one as well.
Although the ice blue sky almost s fits the theme.
Very Van Gogh Mary.
01-25-2013, 03:10 PM
I saw the artichoke flower before it disappeared! Nice!!
Great take on van Gogh, Mary. :)
Okay, something quite new for me, trying to draw my granddaughter, and she's only 18 months old, so pretty 'new' herself!
Next: something in the kitchen
01-25-2013, 04:33 PM
You are drawing these so well, keeping the delicacy of a small child's skin. Open mouths aren't the easiest but it really works.
01-25-2013, 05:55 PM
Deborah that is such a charming sketch! So pretty.
Something from the kitchen...
What is on your porch or terrace.....
01-25-2013, 07:06 PM
love the granddaughter sketch and the onion/garlic sketch ... and fun to see both the artichoke and its transformation to the peaceful winter scene.
hmmm, what is on your porch or terrace...looking forward to seeing what someone come up with
01-25-2013, 07:58 PM
And the fun continues! I always enjoy what everyone publishes here.
so we continue on...
"What is on your porch or terrace....."
This was done on my terrace while vacationing in San Miquel de Allende:
on sketchbook page
and the next sketch is "something inside your home"
01-28-2013, 09:18 AM
flowers of a potted plant painted from life inside my home in 2011. I had to keep moving it across the room so that the sunbeam would keep shining on it. :)
the next sketch is done in pencil or pen
