A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Tape your paper in 3
Project Leader: Scitzo
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

If you feel like the picture you want to paint has no focal point or something is missing, just try this, no matter its a landscape, flower or whatever.

Before you start to paint your drawing, tape the paper in tree parts by using masking tape.
Paint your subject, remove tape...and enjoy!
No rules to divide the tape, you can even tape diagonal, just give it a try.

Have a look at http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114272 to get an idea.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=458)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Well, I've started!! Got my paper taped, drawing on, masque on, waiting for that to dry. Hopefully, it will be a Southwestern scene, with my new Daniel Smith Desert Duochrome paints!!:)

Well, here it is! Don't know why the taped off portion is showing sort of blue or graay, it's pure white paper:confused:

Thanks, Lady Carol! Hope you think I did okay w/your reference!

I used the Daniel Smith colors Duochrome Adobe (the bronze color), Duochrome Saguaro Green, Duochrome Desert Bronze (a greeny bronze) and Duochrome Cactus Flower (on top of Winsor Violet), WN Burnt Sienna, and DS Genuine Lapis Lazuli on the sky.

I hope you enjoy it--I did painting it!

BTW, the taped edges are all straight, the digi shows them as a little wonky.

Oooooo! Lyn, the new colors are stunning! You have a nice wide range of values. I love the sunny feel you've captured. That blue is luscious! I think you should do one of these in "untaped" mode as well.

Thanks, Erin, I probably will--I know what I would do differently to give a feeling of receding butte! I love the glimmer of the Daniel Smith paints in RL.:D

I like the painting , and the fact there's three of them, really makes you look again. Beautiful.

I don't know if you seen the picture I posted on the thread that started this. I took the painting into the matting. Check it out.

Lyn, the colour is absolutely vibrant! I can tell that you really enjoyed painting this... the foreground foliage is well done, too... I love the intense blues in the butte (wish someone would tell me how to get a receding butt  ) and your sky is really lovely!!!

I pulled your picture into my photo software and autobalanced it... then, couldn't get the uploader to work, so maybe someone else could help you with that... anyway... it made quite a difference when the taped sections showed up as white...

Steph, Nice abstraction over the flower pattern. Were you going to Brunswick for vacation? We used to summer on St. Simons before it got trendy...

Sylvielu, nice work! I love the composition, and the cropping by the tape is really dramatic. Great!

I'm looking forward to seeing the others in this project.

artmom! I love your taped painting. That assignment really intriqued me but I'm so busy trying to do all the other things that caught my eye first! I love how it makes it look like you're looking out a window (that was a strange sentence!)... it's a good lesson to learn that sometimes it's the simplest things that can make a big and interesting impact! I would like to look out of the window of your painting for a long while...

I think this one is fantastic, great way of dividing the tape, nothing wrong with the bottom section if you ask me!

Scitzo

Thank you Scitzo! I was really trying to get 3 mini paintings which could work on their own. I might try again on a larger sheet of paper. Thanks for passing on this idea, it really is fun!

Steph, Rapolina, Lyn, Char, thanks for your comments :) I was trying to create depth, Rapolina, so I left that little area of field paler.

BTW it's 11x7 on Arches rough paper (had to really burnish the tape edges with the end of a spoon to prevent paint seeping underneath) And I used my brand new Winsor yellow - I'm a convert! :D

*edit* I meant to mention a great use of these paintings! Sometimes when a subject is big it overwhelms you and you can't work out a composition. Try taping like this then painting a quick sketch of the whole scene, when you're done you can choose the composition you like best for a more detailed painting!

Sorry I talk rubbish alot! lol

What I meant (remember this is after midnight, Friday night!)

If you look at a scene and can't decide which bit would be the best composition, try taping in sections, paint whole scene loosely, then see which small area works the best. I think. Like the right section worked best on mine?

I dunno, seemed a good idea earlier! lol

JJ, this is beautiful!!! And what a perfect subject for the taping!!! This would have been probably just another landscape without a particular focal point but with the taping it is ab-so-lute-ly beautiful! Your clouds are great--the little sailboats and the reflections! JUST SUPER!!!

Can you tell I like it? LOL

Thank you Scitzo, I have had this photo for years and never thought of doing this with it. Obviously it was begging to painted taped in three.

I actually only took the photo, because of the red yacht in the middle, it fasinated me and really stood out from the rest.

Thank you all for your comments. I used Caran D'Ache Neocolor 11s. They are crayon-sized. My wcs are packed to go to the cottage so I just grabbed these.

After taping in a regular diagonal pattern, I turn around the page to imagine what to do, then developed this concept of a dessert landscape whith a long glass wall reflecting. Donīt know if contributes anything to the project but I pick up the idea and redo in a more conventional composition wich Iīll post as a thread cause i like a lot.
So, altough didīt get the most of the project yet, it helps me a lot in having a new subjets to research, thanks Scitzo

This is my very first picture post in an ongoing forum. Hopefully I'm doing this correctly.

I did this a while back in colored pencil and just didn't know what to do with it. It was so busy, but just didn't feel complete yet, soooo... I broke it into a triptic using paintshop pro and wah la!. I like it much better like this. It really helped to use the computer to test-drive it before cutting it apart.[

Very nice shapes. If you used Dan Smith's duochrome paints, I'm sure this picture doesn't do your painting justice. Aren't they fun to play with? Zyffyr:D

Interesting concept--Wonderful rendering of the Spanish street--the lower panel is VERLY dramatic. A very hot Spanish feel to it.

IMO, the whole painting would be much more dramatic if the upper part of the building was a little different in color than where the tape was. Perhaps it is, but it doesn't show on scan.

Thanks, I agree fully about the white-on-white problem. It was the first thing I noticed as well.

I think the painting might be improved by either using a thin strip of mat to separate the sections or even cutting the rectangles apart and spacing them further.

Cheers,
lidia

I'm clapping right along with Snoopy. It always amazes me what framing adds. I try to remind myself not to throw anything out in disgust until I look at it framed. On the flip side, the cost in time and money to frame something helps me throw out the iffy stuff.

I like the one with the framing--IMO the mat is still too close in color to make it dramatic. Thanks for asking for my opinion.:)

At first I hesitated to enter this painting since I did it a few years back for a class assignment, which is probably "cheating". But it fits in so well with the theme for this project that I decided to go ahead anyway. Forgive me if I violated any rules.

Our assignment was to do a tryptych. As soon as the assignment was given, I knew that the photos I took while riding through the Blue Ridge Mountains the summer before would be perfect. I tried to make sure that each panel would also work on it's own as an individual painting. I think I succeeded.

I used tape when I painted it. I think it was 1" tape. The painting has been matted and framed for a few years. I cut the mat myself. I did not take it out of the frame to photograph it. Like I said, I cheated and used a painting I did in class a few years ago, because I thought it fit the project so well.
