What do most of you know or think about online Artists Registeries. I found 2 today.
One is a new one for Texas Artists but they have no one on it yet and they offer free web sites but still only have blank demos sites so far and I can't really tell that any artists have registered with them yet. It's all free although one of the links is to a Gallery of some sort.
Also, I found another registry that registers Artists from each state and its free to get listed.
On either of these you can post name, bio and a piece of Art.
Are getting listed on these wise?

Doesn't anyone have any experience with these types of things? I'm anxious to know.

Generally speaking, artist registries are a good thing. Since I am not familiar with the two you specifically referenced it is hard to comment. On the Texas one, check to see when the site was created. It might be that they just started, or it might be that not many Texas artists have listed with them yet.
The greatest benefit online for any site is the fact that you get listed and another link to your own site is added.
The greatest benefit to being listed with a "good" standard registry (one that is not online) is the visibility you gain by being in their archives. Most standard registries require your 35mm slides, bio, etc. be sent to them. Your data is posted in an accessible notebook of some kind that local designers, musuems, corporate art reps, etc. can physically see, and seek local artists to collect or purchase their work.
"Physical" registries usually charge a nominal fee which is well worth it particularly if the registry is specific. In other words, if it is a "portrait" only, "landscape" only, "Texas" artist only registry, etc.
If you are considering postin with an "online only" registrie please post the URL and I'll take a look at it (them). I'll be away till Monday, so also email me with the info so am sure to see it.
Take care,
Diane

The more places you are linked to, the better the chances that your work will be seen. I take all the free links I can get for artist registrys.

Thanks ya'll and I take that back about no Artists on that website above. You have to use their search box for Oil, etc and then you find the Artist. They've been online since 98 apparently.

Tammy,
I tried to email you last week right before I left on my trip and have just returned to find your email was bounced back to me. So I will post the info here to be certain you get the invo I sent :
http://www.texasonlineart.com/
Seems to have been online since 1998 by a man who wants to work with artists and dealers. However, you are right. There are only 3 sites represented. Unless you contact and discuss what Eric really has in mind to actively represent the artists, I don't recommend listing with this site.
And this one: http://www.artistregistry.com/
says, " We welcome all Artists and Galleries to stop in..." You want someone who is not waiting for people to "stop by" but represent you or who at least has "Rolodex" of clients seeking the work of Texas artists. This site has only been online since '99 and has done a better job of visually displaying the work. At least they have a link to the artist's site and a brief description. There is no indication of where this site is based or who runs it, a minus. They list artists from all over the world and in their News section have mainly European and African-based art news. Not much help if you are trying to market in Texas. I view this more as an online directory than as a registry. If it catches on, they have a great domain name, but that is all at this time.
I would recommend sticking with the major online directories right now such as:
http://www.fine-art.com/ http://www.wwar.com/ http://www.artswire.org/ http://www.absolutearts.com/ http://www.artist-info.com/artisthtml/index.asp http://www.art.net
who come up in search engines for Texas as well as other states...
and perhaps the ArtRegistry.com above. In addition try individual galleries and organizations in Texas online such as:
http://www.tfaa.org/artservices/index.html http://www.austingalleries.com/browse_artists.asp http://www.womenandtheirwork.org/about.htm
Also write to Mark Harden at mharden@texas.net
Mark owns and runs one of the best online art archives (http://www.artchive.com/). He might be more familiar with Texas registries/sites and opportunities to list/display.
Take Care,
All the Best,
Diane

Oh, Diane, just an update. I had already signed up on Texasartistonline and today I signed up on Artregistry but haven't had a confirmation from them yet.
I did take your advice though and signed up on wwar.com. I didn't know you could sell your work there too although selling on there was the last benefit I was looking for.
I just wanna get my name in them directories. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks again and I think I saw lee smith there! Gee, never know who you are gonna run into! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
