I appreciate this chance to bring you this information as the previous publisher of Art Calendar Its really wonderful to find this site - and find so many friends here. The news from Art Calendar is not all good and not all bad. For four years I did my best to bring to the art community the most valuable information and ideas I could gather. It has been the most rewarding time of my life. Like the Dali Lama says however, great love and great achievment take great risk. I had purchased the chance to do this for a million and one half dollars from the previous owners of Art Calendar. I did this with no money of my own but with the generous backing of the Puffin Foundation. To this foundation I owe a great deal. As it turned out no matter how hard I worked the purchase of the magazine required greater cash flow than I could sustain. For four years I think I pulled rabbits out of hats and dodged more bullets than a cat with nine lives. Finally the lending institutions which included the previous owners of the magazine decided that I was not making good enough financial progress and they called a halt to my efforts. This took me a bit by surprise leaving me unable to notify anyone. Recently for no good reason that I can see, they have also shut down our website. But when one door closes another opens. I will work diligently to bring the dialogue here to wet canvas. I will also work dilligently to bring the listings of opportunities - calls for entry to the art community free of charge. This will be done by a monthly posting on the internet: the site will be announced here if this is acceptable to the Wet Canvas moderators. It seems that one of the previous owners of Art Calendar is clearly about to publish the January issue. (WE missed the Nov, and Dec) This previous owner has the subscription list and an intent to fulfill all subscriptions. This same previous owner has been very critical of the content of the magazine from the time I became the publisher so I am sure you will see many changes. As the previous publisher I am committed to helping artists. Please contact me with any questions or areas in which the resources that I have gathered in my tenure may be of help to your careers. Also anyone who feels that the company Art Calendar owes them money after seeing the new issues let me know.
When one door closes another opens.
I wish you all with all my heart a great 2001. PS the iraa is well and can be found at iraaregistry.org

Thanks Barb, and welcome to WetCanvas! I know that everyone will welcome your presence here and please do feel free to post any and all information you have or will have to the forums.
Yes, you will find that many of the members at WetCanvas were also members of Art Calendar. We don't have a hot tub here, but I think several of the AC members are building one in the Cafe Chat Room. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I think your information might fit into the forum called "Art Business". Or, if you have general information to share, you might stop by the Cafe. At the Cafe Guerbois you can talk about anything.
Once again, Welcome. We are sooooo glad you are here. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Dear Barb Dogherty,
I am so glad to find you here, alive and kicking, and finally giving us the low-down on what has happened to AC. It's a killer world out there for entrepreneurs, yet if we didn't spring for what our hearts know is a good idea, nothing at all would happen. Thank you for all you have put into AC magazine, and for the stress that I KNOW it costs to sustain a venture like that.
We artists ARE a force in society, and even totalitarian governments have not been able to shut us up and discourage us from venturing forth with ideas and truths.
Onward and upward.
This looks like a great place to build a swimmin' hole. (sorry--huge image--all wrinkles showing...no holds barred)

Welcome Barb,
And mucho thanks for the explanation...we were wondering what had happened and all we had wanted was some information. How about posting the info in Art Business if Scott feels that is ok?

Glad to hear from all of you - I have not been allowed to see the new Art Calendar so if anyone wants to send me an issue please do to Barb Dougherty -PO BOX 170 Upper Fairmount MD 21867. After a gander I will send it back. We struggled for a long time with the no entry fee policy. The bottom line was that if artists helped organizations afford exhibitions we would all bring a greater art exposure to the public. Like having a lot of athletic meets gets the public excited and with knowledge about sports. So we encouraged small and reasonable entry fees. We also put on exhibitions and contests ourselves to see if there was a profit from entry fees - there certainly was not. So I for one believe that small entry fees are acceptable - how about the rest of you?

Barb and others,
Hope y'all do not mind, but I am going to move this thread over to art business so that it can be discussed further. This is the forum that welcomes new members to WetCanavas! and answers WetCanvas! questions, sorta like the Welcome Wagon. Since this is great information for the Art Business Forum here at WetCanvas!, it makes good sense to move it there.
For further clarification, ArtCalendar.com is/was/is another website for artist that has recently undergone changes and will experience more changes in the near future. Our wish for them is that they live long and prosper for the betterment of all artist on the internet and in real life.

Thank you, Barbara. I did just receive my January issue today. They indicated that it was put together hastily, so I'm wondering what some of the other changes are likely to be, if that's something you can comment or speculate on?
It looks as though the Scuttlebutt section has become simply a letters to the editor section... I really appreciated getting a heads up on scammers, and will miss that.
BTW, I particularly appreciated the contract series you were running, as well as the articles on art markets in various cities.
I wish you all the best with everything.
Sincerely,
Karen
I was sorta hoping that Barb would continue that here. How about it Barb... You could do a weekly article or you could leave the information here in the Art Business Forum.
We all would love it if you would. Hey, you could even turn your past articles into new articles for WetCanvas! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I would love to do a weekly article for wet canvas. Give me the details of how you want it sent and I will begin.
So much that happens in the art world is a matter of misunderstanding or lack of information. My commitment at Art Calendar was to address that issue. Thus the commitment stays but the place to find the messge changes
Thank you

Dear Barb,
Welcome aboard!! I remember when you started ArtCalendar with little or nothing. You did a masterful job with the publication. I have kept most all of my copies for reference.
I wish you all the best with your future challenges and endeavors. You did a great service with AC to so many artists.

After having met you at an Art Festival, where you were a judge, I can understand why the old owner was critical of you. I recall you (and your co-horts) as being quite rude to the artists. I also recall you giving the prize to a friend of yours who had a booth full of plagerized "art".
After meeting you, I ceased considering Art Calendar a credible source of information. I'd guess that you are more interested in helping yourself, than in helping artists (ie:the request that subscribers contact you if they want a refund because of the revamp, is pretty transparent. Anyone who would lke a refund can contact the publisher directly).
Hopefully the new/previous publisher will be able to rebuild the magazine into something worth subscribing to.

I guess since this topic was begun at my initiation as an explanation - then I need to reply to the last posting here.
First I know a lot of artists very well so when I jury a show I usually do know the winner. ( I have been an artist making a living at my art for over 25 years and a juror and publisher of an national art magazine for over 4 years. For this reason the jurying of the show at Virginia Beach was done by 3 judges, with equal wieght so that my selections were considered only in regard to the other judges. All 3 judges gave the highest scores to this artist. Second I read the letters about plagerized work and the work accused of being a plagerism was in fact the original design for the record cover - in other words the artist herself designed the record she was accused of plagerising. However while I study art all the time I may not always recognize a derivative work of art. In some respects though all art is derivative. This artist later was asked not to reapply because her pottery was done at her own production studio. We picked her painting as the winning work not the pottery and we were not responsible for the jurying in of the artists only the selection of award winners. As to your accusation of our rudeness. I would hope this was not true .I was the first judge at that show to insist on talking to each and every artist there. I took far more time than any judge has taken and tried to give feedback to each and every artist regarding my choices or lack thereof. I recall many years exhibiting in that show myself and having the judge just glance at the booth not even walk in and walk by - I did not do that. As to the rest - i guess we leave that to a higher authority. Thanks for your feedback. I know that when a person steps out into the world and tries to serve others that everyone may not see the effort as what is intended.
I hope you have a successful art career

Hello, all,
After 6 months of catching up and rebuilding, I have finally discovered this forum. Better late than never.
First, I'm pleased to report that Art Calendar magazine is alive and well. The 1997-2000 staff is no longer associated with it in any way, and I am indeed publishing it again (I was the original founder and
publisher from 1986 until 1997). Hard to believe 6 months have already passed since the change-over -- it's late May 2001 as I write this, and we have published 6 issues.
For specific info about what happened, please go to our website, http://www.ArtCalendar.com, click on "Discussion Forum," and scroll down to "Old News at the Magazine." That'll probably tell you more than you want to know!
Anyway, I am reading the postings on this forum and passing the word where it seems appropriate.
Blessings,
Carolyn
