this is an image created from a photo of my hubby and our son. It is the first charcoal image I have done.

You should be congratulated on your first charcoal attempt. Nice strong confident strokes have given them an alive quality.
The only things I would change would be to use a kneadable eraser to lift off the strength of the lines under your son's eyes, and also to remove those parallel ilnes either side of the tips on the noses.
Good effort.

Your expressions are excellent! I agree with Geoff, great first attempt at charcoal, I haven't ever tried it yet. Really great portrait to keep for memories. Cheers. Debs =))

A good destination. Your work has got soul. It has become a drawing of real persons, no matter some faults in anatomy.
