Hi, what a great idea this new forum :)
I just finished my studies, I still don't know if I'll roll next semester again, I studied at unversity of sonora, méxico, they were not classes for a formal career, they were open curses but very well structured and complete, I've been studying for 4 years now...
Regards :)
Currently taking a single course by correspondence from British Columbia Open University & Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design. It'll get me credit towards my regular degree. It's a sculpture course. Might as well have fun while I'm collecting credits!

September through may I'll be finishing off my highschool education and graduating. I'll be a senior next school year.
I"m currently looking for a decent college to fit my needs. Its tought though since I live in the middle of nowhere and I don't have funds for any formal education. :(
But i have hopes. This forum is great! Its already helping me immensely! :D

as to what I've done in highschool already. I"ve taken 1 semester of 3D design/sculpture, 1 semester of photography, and like 2 years of 2D art/painting/drawing. This coming year I'm taking 2 semester's of sewing, and i'm taking like double art classes. like 2 art classes per semester. oh yeah, and I'm on the yearbook staff too!!!
oh and, I"ve taken some graphic/web design classes. and a desktop publishing class.

Right now I'm taking a correspondance art course, Art Institute (you know the 'draw me' people ;0) Next year I will be a senior in high school and will be in the advanced placement art course.

My school doesn't have advanced placement art courses. I've already taken all they have to offer so I'm doing it as an independant study next year. Which I guess might count as an advanced class. But really its just doing whatever you want. You don't get assigned anything, and you don't get much help.
:cat: stacy

06-23-2003, 04:24 PM
Hehehe Well it sounds like fun at least! (no assignments)
I'm nervous that I won't like the class, I haven't taken an art class in forever, and don't really like the teacher, he is very moody. But I guess I can always drop it if I hate it ^_^
Stacy_Renee
06-23-2003, 05:06 PM
yea....my art teacher isn't too great either! I don't understand him at all! Which I guess its good if you don't have assignments so I can avoid him most of the time. You still have to turn in a minimal amount of work. He just doesn't assign specific projects.
He thinks I'm a ditz or something. (Ok so I can never get the mat cutting thing right!) I guess its a personality clash.
My highschool art teacher is strange. He will give everyone a project to do, and a due date. But he doesn't show us HOW to do anything. He has never taught me any techniques. Which is ok, I"ve managed. But I think I could really have developed faster if he would have done that. Is that just the way my school is?

Well the last art class I had...It was either 6th or 7th grade....I cant remember, (you know the mandatory one that alternates with the mandatory music class-boring) He gave us projects, and they were soooo dumb, all of them ,I hated them all, he would sort of explain how to do it, but it was so simple there was no explanations needed. I wouldnt call it an 'art' class so much as a 'crafts' class. Hopefully next year will be better :D

I'm enrolled in a graphic arts program in community college. My major is desktop publishing and probably web design too. But I'm adding some art and design classes to round out my skill set (not to mention just for fun!) I just finished my first design class and I'm now enrolled in Drawing I. :)

Hey,
I am attending Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska for undergraduate studies. Major is Graphic Design, Minor is editing and publishing. Chose that major because I have 2 kids and need to be able to find a job somewhere when I get out of school. Still get to take many fine arts classes though, like sculpture, painting, and figure drawing. Eventually plan to get my MFA somewhere.

Hello! I'm going to be a senior in high school, and I'm planning on attending art school or majoring in art. I've been interested in art since I was very young - my parents would take me to museum in a child carrier before I could walk. I was selected for an art program for "gifted" students (I feel funny saying that, for aren't we all gifted?) in elementary and middle school. During high school I've taken Intro to Art, Drawing I, Drawing II, Painting, and Sculpture. I'll be taking Advanced Art, Painting II and Sculpture II next year. Painting II and Sculpture II are only available this year because of the construction on our schools. It's to replace Black and White Photography until the photo lab is ready. And I really wanted to take that class! But I also take classes outside of school at nearby art colleges. I'm getting nervous about preparing a portfolio, and I'd really like some advice on that.
Stacy_Renee
06-25-2003, 10:43 PM
wow melancholy, your school sounds nice. my highschool doesn't have a gifted program for art, they have them for everything else though! and i'm so jealous that you get to go to an art college for classes! that's really good experience. that way you'll already know what its like. I have no idea what to expect when I go.
I'm also very nervous about preparing my portfolio. and i feel my work is kind of weak. (i've been lazy! shame on me) so I don't really think I have a winning chance.
the only courses my highschool offers is intro to art, 2D art (painting and drawing), 3D art (sculpture, 3d design), art 4 (independant study), and b/w photography. the photo class is good (but expensive) and the rest is just silly. i don't think my school takes art very seriously. i assume its because there isn't really a majority of talent in that area. we're getting a new highschool but its not going to be open before i graduate. i'm sure the facilities will improve once we get that.
advice would be nice :p

The gifted program is actually just for elementary and middle school kids, but it's just been cut! We have major budget problems, and the override that was going to save the high school's clubs and some sports didn't pass. So we're going to have to raise money ourselves if we want any clubs at all! Also, the art classes are going to be HUGE next year. But I suppose it's much better than many schools have, and I'm glad that they havn't cut art all together.
Stacy_Renee
06-26-2003, 02:30 PM
i wish our school had an art club. but even if we did no one would join. you see everyone at my highschool takes art, but none of them are exactly artists. none but a very few. our school is so small that everyone does the same thing. even when it comes to art. which isn't very creative at all. i've wanted to start one but i'd be too afraid that i would have a whole bunch of artist wanna be's on my hands.

Yeah, I was in the art club my freshman year of high school. I enjoyed it for a while, my favorite project being painting a piece of furniture for an auction to benefit the homeless. But I felt really quite alone there. It seemed like a lot of people thought it was the craft club and not the art club (Not that I'm dissing crafts-neon pipe cleaners rock!). I didn't participate during my sophomore year. I couldn't help feeling so alone. Strangely enough, the best artistic support I found in my school's poetry club. I was the president this year :) . I really hope that we can continue to have meetings this year, since we never used any school money anyways :p .
Stacy_Renee
06-26-2003, 04:41 PM
yeah....its really funny how poetry and art goes hand in hand. i really think a poetry club would be nice. i write poetry all the time myself. i'm going to make a book and publish it one of these days...i wish the summer could last forever so i'll have plenty of time to do what i need! it doesn't help that i have to visit a whole bunch of colleges and prepare my portfolio and admissions stuff. that's beside all that i wanted to do this summer. that's the stuff i HAVE to do.
:cat: stacy
ps-there is a whole bunch of books i want to read (art instruction books, etc..) that's been sitting on my shelf for ages. but i guess you could say i'm lazy.

Im a Senior at Towson University in Baltimore MD, and I'm a Digitial Illustration major...maybe photo minor, depends on if I get all my classes to graduate on time or not. I plan on doing forensic art when I graduate, and trying to do concert photography as well.

Yeah, that's the funny thing about art books. I find that I often spend more time reading about art than actually doing art, which then makes me feel kind of guilty that I'm not practising what I'm learning. But I have found that what you've read shows up in what you do, when you do it. I've also found that I have sort of an addiction to art books. It's like if I get enough art books, then I'll have a lot to read so I can avoid making art and then feeling that I'm not good enough. The whole idea of "good enough" is really detrimental, since you never are "good enough." The mindset has a lot to do with making art. When I worry about the art being "good enough" for a portfolio, it usually isn't. If I just think "Ok, it doesn't have to be anything it isn't. Just do it and enjoy it", if usually comes out well.
I'm having fun with these colors....

If you ever need more art books i HIGHLY RECOMMEND buying them from amazon instead of from a craft store or book store. They are SO MUCH CHEAPER! on amazon.com. You can even buy used books for prices lower than amazon's. Plus they always have that great deal where if you spend over @25 you get free shipping! I have made a list of books I want on Amazon. You could call it my wishlist. Yes I love buying art books, I just don't have the time to read them all! But I like looking at all the pictures and illustrations and stuff. I think instruction books are much more helpful than my art classes. But that's probably because I have never really been exposed to a good art teacher yet.
If you buy any more art books I recommend "The Natural Way to Draw: A Working Plan for Art Study", by Kimon Nicolaides. He is an awesome art teacher and his book is awesome too. It is set up so well. It even has a lesson schedule and everything!
i am so much more satisfied with my art when i enjoy the process of making it. it doesn't matter if its good enough, if i like making it i will most likely like the finished result.

[COLOR=darkblue]Oh yes, the Kimon Nicolaides book is great. I also love "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards. I just got "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing" by Anthony Ryder in addition to another anatomy book I got earlier, "Anatomy for the Artist" by Sarah Simblet (beautiful b&w photos in that one). I think Amazon is really cool for checking out new books, but I've never bought anything online. My mother won't let me, plus she works at a bookstore now so she get a good discount there. The problem is that it's a nation-wide chain. Those stores can be cool because they're so big and they have so much, but sometimes that selection isn't great and they also make business hard for local places. I feel kinda guilty buying from places that help to homogenize America's taste in books. But I dunno, my family's going through tough financial times (as are so many people) and I want books. I just want. Wanting can be really embarassing. :(/COLOR]

My name is Rachel. I am attending Idaho State University where I am a "special graduate" (meaning someone who already has a Bachelor's degree--mine is in Sociology--and is getting another Bachelors) in Fine Arts. My emphasis is mostly on jewelry and metalsmithing, though I'm sorta burned out on that right now. (I have a damned Incomplete to finish and its pissing me off. :D ) I start my last semester (YAY!) this Fall, and I will be having my senior show and orals (ULP! PANIC!) by November.
Great that we finally got a dorm room!

Hello! :)
I studied art for two years in highschool and did a drawing class for 6 months. I got a certificate for that one.
I've been painting for almost 2 years now and recently took up with abstract, which i've been told is my best feature.
Just got accepted into the Cultural Productions ~ Art History class at the Brisbane Institute of Art in town and the class begins in around two weeks time.
The class only goes for a little over four months, though I will probably keep signing up for courses because they are great for people like me who didn't do so well on their highschool leaving certificate. You don't need an overall mark to enter. So i'm really pleased with that :)
Then someone mentioned I should check the dorm out.. so here I am :)

I wanted to jump back into this thread quick, to say hello to everyone who's replied! There are some new faces in here that I've never seen before - so HELLOO!
I hope everyone will find this forum to be helpful :D If you have any suggestions on what we can do to help make it better, let us know (in a thread outside of this one perhaps ;) )! I realize things are a little slow right now, and maybe we could brainstorm ways to get more people (expecially former students) into the forum to help share their information, without it getting too chaotic.

See my Bio in my link to see the ever growing awards and scholarships I have won. I'm really not bragging, just proud of my accomplishments so far. :) The latest news is I have just won a performance award. That means, two exhibits of my art in the college gallery over the next two semesters. Jumping up and down clapping with joy. YEAAAAA I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!

i had little art in highschool (no "formal" teachng), then went to Camosun College in Victoria, BC, Canada. good two-year diploma program...all art.
photography, painting/drawing, sculpture, pottery, multi-media (video and performance), video, animation, and printmaking. talk about a well rounded two years.
but now i need to learn about other things...i'm 22 and need more input academically.....so now i go to University of Vicotoria come September for a BFA but get to take philosophy courses and the like., this year i'll take painting, photography, and open-media (yet to find out what that means, he, he...i was just hoping it meant i could do wahtever i wanted...i guess i shouldn't count on that...
anyways, anyone close to Victoria should consider their first two-years at Camosun rather that Uvic because you get one hell of a two-year portfolio for other schools and scholarships.
speaking of porfolio....i wish i had started from the start!!!!
advice to any new student...think portfolio to day you start!!!! keep the good old slide film rolling...and keep only the quality images!!!!!
Haha^^ I guess I´m late here:p
I´m Pep, still a senior at high school right now but I´m planning to study next year visual arts here in Argentina in a arts university called Prilidiano Puerredón (and nobody knows it=_=).
Before this I have never studied anything related to arts so let´s hope I´m lucky with it n_n

Hi, Planning on applying to Rutgers University Mason Gross School for the arts MFA program next fall in New Jersey. I'm so excited to have found a place where I can study, afford, and balance my home life (I have two children). I just hope five months will be enough time to add more meat to my portfolio. Does anyone know how much time a professional photographer needs to produce slides?? Also, when looking for a photographer does anyone have any suggestions as to what to keep in mind?? I've never had professional slides taken. :) Kim

I've already posted, but I'm signing in. I am currently at Bristol Community College in Massachusetts. I have attended BU (not as an art student) and UMass Dartmouth (as an english major), I am currently working in both painting and printmaking, although I have also worked with large scale sculptural installations.
After returning to UMass after I finish up my associates (after next semester) I will get my BA in English (I only need 4 credits) and then be able to start work on a second BFA in either printmaking or sculpture. I'll be in school till I'm 30, but what the hell. Making art is about living it, so who cares how long it takes, I love learning new techniques, and being introduced to new artists.

ah well..,lemme just break the ice after sitting on the fence for too long! lol!
i'm akanimoh., (now that s a mouthful isnt it lol) and i still dunno what i'm doing here. logically..,i'm in the university of nigeria nsukka...oops.., i see yur mouths gawping lol! i 'm what i call an"overgraduate!". i guessi should have sat dound and faced my freaking g.s courses. lol!
studying art in nigeria is a hell of a hell. i guess its the most expensive course in any university. sadly we students never seem to know this until the last moment ..unfortunately., its kinda too late.
i really give kudos to any artist who studies art in this country and actually knows how to paint or draw or whatever.. this is cos u pay fees to be taught and you are never taught anything..and i mean..ANYTHING! the highest favour a lecturer could do to you is to dish out assicnments like .., .., "hey you guys.., go to the park and paint whatever you see"! its sad you kno cos most of the time., the poor students actually dont know how to mix colors.., i mean i actually came across a girl who ddint know what colors yu mix to get purple! its sad.., it really is sad. but funny enough, the most surprising thing here is that ..,, at the end of the day.., the students, throught thier trial and error techniques, turn out to be superb artists!.., i guess mine is a typical example lol!
i really dunno how it is liek over there ..,, i think you guys sometimes have things a little too easy for yurselves. .., the school provides art materials and all that.., u really are lucky. i and many of my pals over here know what pains we go thru to get a painting done. most times, u are on yur own.., the school proovides yu guys with nothing. i could have been better if tubes and othe art materials were a bit cheaper than they are.., most times its just too terrible to imagine..
but anyway.., despite all these and more.., i guess i went to school and actually became a self-taught art student. lol!

A really late comer to this thread, but I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts!
My name is Iris, and I work at a university in admissions... :-)
I started out Pre-Med and biology and changed my major to art 3-1/2 yrs into my coursework... 60 credits of science classes became elective credits... (not a recommended way to do things.)
I have a B.A. in Studio Art (painting/drawing) and a B.F.A in Studio art (Sculpture).
(Basically, I really wanted to get the degree for Mom & dad's sake and then went an extra year because of an inspirational sculpture prof.... unfortunately, he had a heart attack that year, and I ended up with a different prof.)
It's been 11 yrs since I got my undergrad and I've been painting and sculpting on and off over the years... my 1st one-woman show will be in the spring (May, 2004).... and I am hoping to get my portfolio together to apply for an M.A. (grad school that I can do part-time!) :-)
I'll try to give my insight on getting into colleges, but I find it interesting to hear what the students have to say as well!

Great to hear all the interesting stories from each artist here, especially kannymoore in Nigeria.
I finished a basic drawing course and am now completing a sculpture class today at my local junior college. We are really blessed to have a strong Arts faculty and comparatively low costs for art education.
At age 49 last year, I had successful cancer surgery but complications like a stroke that have altered my memory and concentration. So my neurologist challenged me to take an art class, NOT for art therapy so much as for learning 'muscle memory' to compensate for my reduced 'mental memory'. I laughed and told him that I couldn't even draw stick people. But I will forever be grateful for his suggestion. This has opened a whole new world to me. There are some learning challenges, but the creative process and fulfillment of completing each project is priceless.
There is no drawing on the wrong side of the brain. ALL drawing/art is right for each brain.

I guess i'm REALLY late!!! Just as i usually am.
a little intro.. my name is kelly. I'm friends of julsiebear. We pretty good pals. I'm not planning to study art after high school (right now grade 12). It's more of a pass time for me. Something to relieve stress. I love working with acrylic, oil pastels, dark room photography, color pencils, etc. etc. I do produce a huge amount of art work, seeing i have a huge amount of stress because i'm a single mother...at 17. lol....can't you see i'm going insane. My art work is my only mean of expressing my self, and my dreams and fantasies. I love working with very dark colors(backgrounds mainly) and contrasting the with extreme contracting colors (black to white). I have been working on a collection entitled "imperfections" which depicts a life of a young girl, who is Gothic, pierced and homeless. It's just the details of her everyday life, her dreams her fantasies. Its currently 10 piece's and i hope have the collection grow to be about 30-40 pieces that are painted, sketch and sculpted. Anywayz i really hope that I will enjoy this forum. And i hope to receive a lot of help and inspiration cause god knows i need it!!!

Well I'm not in college anymore, but....
I graduated from the School of Advertising Art in Kettering, OH...It's a small 8 room, 2-year school but they sure teach you a lot. I've done about everything graphic/web design and illustration wise (except or canvas painting...though we did paint...it was on illustration board).
I now work full time as a graphic and web designer for pretty much myself (clients are www.crossroadsbp.com and www.inyourimage.net to name a few)...then I work at inyourimage as a production manager (I'm second in command under the owners...lol I've stayed there the longest and I only started in October). I do both jobs within the building and I get paid to do art :) how COOL is that :)

Hello!
So, this is my first posting! I have been wandering through the webpage, and it has great stuff. I'm an interior design and business management major @ University of Nevada, Reno. I would love to have my own interior design firm one day. But, the degree stuff is to pay the bills. I am begining a journey in murals for home design, as well as original art from myself for the homes that I would love to design. :D
So, I start...

Hello everyone. I am a graphic design major at UW Stout. I originally started out as a telecom/networking major for 3 semesters, just changed majors last fall, so I built up a few unnecessary credits. I have a ways to go but at least I will be going to school for something that I like.
P.S., this is my first post on this site.

I'm Katie, and I'm a freshman at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). It has the best painting department in the country, and is ranked 3 or 4 overall, but I'm a painting major so that's why I chose it. So far, I love it! I would recomend MICA to anyone serious about becomming an artist.

My name is Mary Ann. Right now I am a student at Okaloosa-Walton Community College (NW FL) with a plan to transfer to U of West Florida for an Interdisciplinary Humanities degree. Attending a smaller college has afforded me close contact with my teachers and nurtured my strengths. The instructors are very supportive of their students.
Painting in oils, pottery and drawing have been my visual arts classes so far. I came across wetcanvas.com after I saw it posted in a message from an art group on yahoo... this is such a terrific site and I enjoy meeting new artists this way. There are many things I find on this site that can be utilized on a daily basis as an art student.
See you around!

This is my first post to the forum I am an aging and indecisive art student, I graduated in 96’, its never to late right. I was attending an on line art course and did not feel I was moving into a progressive or growing stage. I’m currently looking toward RISD and Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design both have left a visual lasting impression on me. Living in Arizona will have me relocate to the other end of the US. I have yet to complete, what I consider, a confident portfolio and visit schools. I’m stuck and growing tired. I continue to have the desire to do this I’m a self-diagnosed tired. I’m hoping I wake up one day buy a one-way ticket and and well who knows. The student forum does give me a bit of push. Oh and I want to study painting and minor in illustration.
Wake up wake up wake up ok sleep now…

This is my first post to the forum I am an aging and indecisive art student, I graduated in 96’, its never to late right.
Welcome! (I'm new too!) :D
It is never, ever too late. Look at Van Gogh, he was late in starting his art studies although he wasn't considered "great" at the time, he is one of the world's most celebrated artists.
I too graduated High School in '96 and (due to restrictions placed on me by family members) was unable to take any art classes until I was out on my own. So, we're not art proteges at the age of 16... we've got plenty of time to become great. :)
I guess I should introduce myself huh?
I am Mimsy (though that isn't my real name... I just like it as it references one of my obsessions: Lewis Carroll)
I am a 26 year old mother, professional, wife, and student. *phew* I'm busy... but I'm slowly working on obtaining my art degree by attending night courses. I'm debating on whether I should go to a CSU to save money... or go to Cal Arts to save commuting time. :P
I was forbidden to persue art during High School as "the powers that be" at that time in my life, felt that I would ruin my life. It was much more sensible to become a business person, well... I gave up my dreams and made some bad choices. Although my decisions were not the wisest they did lead me on my path to self discovery and have enabled me to once again persue my dreams. (*Ultimate Dream* = Donating my art to auction for charity)
Now I'm back in school and trying really hard to piece together my self-confidence and quiet all the nay-sayers by doing what they thought was not possible.

Always leave room for another dream, and another after that, and...

Ok, so I ought to introduce myself too, instead of just lurking!!
My name is Anthea, I'm 27 and currently a housewife that is trying to study Interior Design by correspondence. My only problem is that I seem to be getting VERY distracted by all sorts of things..... including Art. I am considering getting off my rear end and attending college in September. My local college does a BA in Fine Art (3 years) and also an HNC Fine Art (1 year). I haven't quite decided which one I'm going for, but have applied for both. I'm kinda hoping that my decision will be made for me by only being accepted to one!!!
Oh, and I live in the Scottish Highlands.... although I was born and raised in South Africa. I studied Music at High School and totally missed out on Art. This was because I was Talented at Music and heavens forbid that I could possibly be interested in anything else!!! When I asked to drop music in favour of Art the "powers that be" told me very firmly that I was never going to be allowed to do that. So now, I'm finally getting to do what I wanted!!!! Although I'm rather nervous about that too.....
Ok enough chatter, back to the real world.
Anthea
PS I will be continuing my Interior Design studies concurrently with the art studies!!!! I must be crazy!

I'll be the second Allison in a row! Cept I'm Allison D. :) *waves to Allison C.*
I'm not going to a fancy art school or anything, but I am majoring in Studio Art (2d) at Louisiana Tech. Heaven's knows I wanted to go to a fancy art school :) But I'd rather get paid 870 dollars a quarter than have to pay 10000 a year... :D
So far I've got a pretty good Mural business going. 4 jobs so far and more to come! Hopefully it will help me pay for everything I need! (Supplies and books!! Ahh!)

I'm 38, and studied Commercial Art at a juniour college 15 years ago, 'cause I didn't know whether to pursue art or music, and ended up studying art 'by default', 'cause I had to declare a major, and I was already taking commercial art classes.
Do you still pursue your music, even as a hobby?
I'm rebuilding my recording studio, and hope to sell my drum set later this month, to purchase a PA system, so I can start lining up some small gigs this fall, performing electronic dance music, for extra money.
I've decided that I'm not going to choose between visual art and music; I'm going to do both. Study visual art in college during the day, and work on music at least a couple evenings and on the weekends!
Best wishes to you for finding your way through school, whatever you decide to do,

Hey there
Thanks for your reply Keith. Just to let you know.... I still do Music as well, but only as a hobby and occasionally in our church. Although I do enjoy it, I've had too many years of forced enjoyment..... so I only play when I get in the mood to do so.....
However, that is becoming more frequent! Perhaps oneday I'll get back into it properly, but right now I'm enjoying my art!!

Looks like this thread is pretty old, but I don't see any harm in keeping it going.
My name's Caitlin and I'm a biology major/art minor, although I haven't actually taken an art class yet. I'm going into my junior year at Willamette University in Oregon and will be taking my first drawing class this fall.
Eventually I want to get a master's in medical illustration, and I'm already freaking out about grad school applications and putting together my portfolio. It feels good to be among a group of people that know what that's all about :-)

I'm new here, and I thought that this thread would be perfect for a first posting ;)
I am a rising junior at Vermont College where I am majoring in creative writing. I harbor dreams of getting an MFA in creative writing/literary arts, particularly from Brown. When it comes to preferred expression I am definitely a writer first, but I love learning about and tinkering in all kinds of visuals arts. My favorite mediums are digital photography, clay (I don't have a car but I do have a pottery wheel!), and fiber/yarn. So, I'm always studying regardless of if it is for college credit or not. :)

I'm also a "late" emerging artist, having graduated in '96. My own PTB's routed me towards an engineering degree. Once I finally decided that it wasn't for me (read-took too many calculus courses), I did a pretty good job at racking up student loans with no goal in mind before dropping out of school for several years. I came back this spring with one class, then again in the summer with one class. Working hard in those classes pulled my GPA back into good standing, and gave me the motivational "push" to try this out full-time, at least for a semester or two. I'll finish up my core this semester, and then it's just art history & studio classes from there on. I'm at Kennesaw State University (just outside Atlanta, GA) working towards my BFA in Graphic Design and possibly Photography & Printmaking with a minor in German. The big thing is to get that first BFA, then it's my husband's turn to work on his master's if he wants to go that route before I head back to school again.

This is an old thread, but I'll post my two cents to keep it going.
I've been out of high school for about two years now working on my portfolio since the school hired a football coach to teach art. I'm hoping to apply to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for admission in Spring 2005 to major in Studio Art/Painting.

I'm Emma, and I'm a student wannabe.
I didn't take any art classes in high school, somehow graduated with the idea that little girls should grow up to be engineers, and felt I was letting my gender down by settling for geology.
After failing calculus FOUR TIMES. I spent two years pretending to be a textiles major, finally graduating with a BA in geology and a minor in textiles.
Now I've been working in the "real world" for going on three years, gearing myself up to go back for a masters in textiles. Right now I'm working on redefining myself as an artist, not just a craftsman. I've already tried making money by selling jewelry as a craftsperson, and it isn't worth the time to me. I'd rather keep my day job and make what I want to make than pander to the uninformed public. Oddly enough, it's metalsmithing that brought me to WetCanvas, but it's the textiles that brought me here.

I am returning to art school this coming fall as a sophmore after a 20 year absence. I will be attending Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA. with my focus on painting and printmaking. I would love to go on to get an MFA as well.
Very excited to be returning to finish my degree after all these years :)
Hey guys. I'm 23 and from the St Louis area. I just graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It's a great school, hard to get use to, but excellent after you get into the flow. The teachers are fantastic, and the students are hard on each other and on themselves.
However, let me note that the school is very conceptual, and less technical. This is improving in some areas, but it's best if you combine this with classes from a more technical school, unless you are a self learner with computers, cameras, and so forth; depending what you do. The school is best known for its Painting/Drawing department, Fashion, and Photography, with a pretty good Film/Video and new Media program.
Make sure you also visit the school. Some art schools are extremely business oriented, and you can be stuck in a technical environment that will make you feel like you're being trained to become a robot.

Getting all those silly Generals out of the way. I want to graduate in Visual Arts with Commercial emphasis. Can't wait to get into the art part. I feel like I'm in High School agian with classes and such. I think the reason I am going to school is to expand and explore art that I havent thought of. And it never hurts to learn a new trick in something you already know alot about. But I plan to go into layout and design for a large (crosses fingers ) co. so haveing a degree is a must. Plus I'm taking alot of class's that help with public speaking and business could help with how to sell your work. Hope to get lots of help with all this new info I hope to absorbe. So far I have learned alot just searching in the forums.

Hello again, everyone.
One week from Monday, the fall semester begins. I'll be a seniour at the Kansas City Art Institute, majoring in painting. I have the same teacher for drawing and painting this fall, and I'll have that same teacher for painting in the spring, as well. She's a tremendously good painter, and her work is just as good conceptually, as it is technically.
I'm really looking forward to being back in school. I've prepared a number of preparatory drawings this summer, and I should be ready to start painting the first week of school.
I'll be applying to grad schools by the end of the year; I'm not going to waste any time between the BFA and the MFA, not if I can help it. I turned 40 last week; I've waited long enough.
Good luck this fall, everyone!
Keith.

I'll also be starting a week from Monday. I'll be in my second and final year at at a local community college (mainly just getting the general education requirements out of the way) and hope to transfer to the University of North Alabama next year to pursue a BFA.
I've got Drawing I and Design I this Fall semester (along with some general education requirements). Both of them are with the same teacher (who I also had for Art History I last semester), although I really don't "get" his art (it's mainly abstract, non-representational work), but he's a good, knowledgeable teacher and a really nice guy.
Really looking forward to it.

Hi everybody! I'm Anna. I like to draw, design, and paint. I got an Associates of Arts degree and am also a Disabled American Veteran lady. I consider everybody on this site as a much better artist than myself since I'm just beginning. I look forward to maybe some day when I can afford to attend art school. This is also my first time posting in this forum. Have a great weekend everybody!

Lulu, I know exactly how you feel. I'm dead-set on Chicago but after a summer program at the museum school in Boston, I know that that school is a glowing plan B. I don't know about the undergrad/grad program, but the ECP was absolutely fantastic. I just don't know about taking academics at Tufts--I'm a little scared of that.
I'm currently in high school in Florida (not in Miami!), and am applying to SAIC, SMFA, Carnegie-Mellon, and maybe Cooper Union. I need to find more colleges to apply to though, I know I can't put all my eggs in one basket.

Academy of Art University
BFA Sculpture
University of Wisconsin--Green Bay
Finishing up a BFA
Major: Gallery/Museum Practices
Minor: Communication and the Arts: Arts Management
There is a huge studio art emphasis with my program. As well as creating my own art, I also run an online art gallery and plan on opening a physical location in a couple years.

I am at Kennesaw State University.
I would have tried harder to get into SCAD, but I really don't know what I want to do, art or otherwise, and KSU has a good art program anyway.
Art Interest major right now. No art classes at the moment either... :(

Hello all,
I have just started at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto!
I've been waiting for many years for the opportunity.
I'm working full time, so my only option was one of their part time study programs.
Cheers all!

I try to follow classes twice a year for one month. So far, I was a student at the Art Student League of New York (4 times), Academie La Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France, Kunstschule Berlin in Berlin (Germany) and Mario Ferrari in Buenos Aires.
Academie La Grande Chaumiere in Paris and Art Student League are my favorites. Why? Very tradional, well organized.

I just went through the web site of Academy of Art University looking for oil painting lessons ON LINE. I am confused by their info.
Is it a good way to get any further? They do not mention any prices. How much do they charge. I do not feel at ease with them. Am I wrong?

Academy of Art University is a private art college in San Francisco, California. I was thinking about applying online there, but their prices are extremely exorbitant, meaning too expensive. They said that it was a fair price being that it's a private college. So I didn't apply there. I suppose nothing is for free, but it's just that I couldn't afford it. I'm happy with the less-than-$100 art classes at my local community college.

UNC-Greensboro, BFA in design/painting and I'll be a senior by Christmas. I've been asked to join some honor society...I could understand the motivation if I were going into business or politics, but do you guys see any advantage to these things as an artist?
