I would like to start a discussion on how and where we can find collectors on the
Web. We know how they can find artists but do we have to wait for them to find us
or can we fine them first. Where do we look? How do we put our work in front of
them.

A very good issue... most of the art sites out there have so many artists listed that collectors have to plough through thousands. What's the chance we'll be found?

I'd be curious to know if anyone has found collectors by advertising (in print) their personal web gallery? In art (appreciation, not artist) magazines, local papers and magazines, etc.

collectors aren't surfing the web, looking for art to buy. they buy from galleries they're comfortable with. they buy on their trip to london or new york. that is,,,,,,,if you're looking for,,, "collectors".....{M}

I believe collectors are surfing the web but it may not be the best way, or maybe I should say the only way to find them. Below is a quote from a post I did about a week ago. It shows three sales from surfing, one from a friend, one from someone seeing my work in a gallery and one from someone seeing my work in my studio (all sales where finalized over the Net". I have advertised in Art Magazines at a great cost with no feed back but I still think this is a very important way to go because most collectors are looking there first.

"I am selling directly from the website. But I find that it is more an after market tool.
That is someone may see my work in a gallery then look to see if I have a web site. I have sold 6 works, two at Bigvine, one who saw my work first in my studio, one to a friend, one who saw my work in a gallery and only one totally from my web site. (Bigvine isn't my web site but those where sales just over the Web. This all in the last 11 months".

That quote pretty much matches my experience... I use my websites as a portfolio (links on business cards are good), and as a convenient cash register to take credit cards from afar. That's pretty much it. *All* my big sales except one have been from local promotion, friend of a friend, people who've seen my artwork in person, etc.
