I took a long break from painting, about 5 years. And recently i decided to get back into it. So i figured doing a master copy, would help me get back to painting. Here is the underpainging i'm doing right now. i would like to make sure the underpainting is good, before i continue on.

the questionable areas for me are the smaller detail items, the walnut, ribbon and the key, melting wax. There are a couple of areas that probably could use a highlight or shade, but i can't do it right now, because the paint is still wet in places.

Any feedback would be apreciated, because i think there are things i'm missing from staring at it for so long.

the key seems to have an odd hang, an odd shadow perhaps?
i think i'd rather see the skull jaw bottom instead of the flower stem
the walnut seems a bit flat somehow
it's a bit unclear as to what, besides the feather and envelope, is behind the candle

i really enjoy the brushwork and general clutter

La, thank you for your feedback!

Here is the image i'm working from

In all honesty, i can not make out what it is behind the candle, and the thing by behind the feather, is an ink well (i think). If you look at P. Claesz other still lifes, he uses a lot of same items, arranged differently.

I will defiantly work a bit more on the ink well, the key and the walnut!
