This morning Island Girl spotted a cicada which had just escaped from its shell. As you can see in pic #1, it was just a few inches away. About 2 hours later it was gone.

(Must have taken the REDEYE!)

The red-eye!LOL!!!! Really-one ugly bug! Funny I didn't remember them as that ugly-used to play with them as a kid! If you squeeze the abdomen slightly they make a very strange sound!
Great catch!!!:D

Hey Micheal...:D I gotta a question.
Can I please have permission to use the close-ups and post the results in the Manipulation forum? I think they'll make a couple of pretty cool Virtual Painter Watercolors.

My gosh that is one ugly bug. Last two shots are awesome. The wings are beautiful.

Sunny and Julie....EEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!!
You played with them as kids?

Cool shots Michael. I love cicadas.

They certainly bring back memories for me both as a kid and of Australia in general. I have videos of my kids playing in Aus and pretty much all you can hear on them is cicadas.

Hope you don't mind me including a photo here. It's just a silly snapshot of my son (16 years ago) with a cicada shell on his head. What I like best about it is the way my sister-in-law looks like she's about to pass out. She really hated them  :D

Thanks for the comments, guys, even the EEEWWW!:D Cute hood ornament, Alan! I decided to 'adopt' the shell guy, so I brought him into the studio for a formal portrait.:D

Alan...LOL & LOL @ the face your sister-in-law is giving you over that cicada! :D

Nice close-up portrait, K.T.!

Sherloc...you must have a sheltered (not to mention a "girl's" ) ;)
My Dad wanted a boy and being the oldest of three girls the job fell to me. :D And I loved it! (All except the worm part when we went fishing. :( )

Fun thread, K.T.

Yep Julie I did. :D
No bugs for this girlie. I grew up in San Francisco. The only bugs I played with were lady bugs and roly polys.
