View Full Version : May 27 paintalong - Sedona

As Rosemarie said, it's probably a good idea to have a separate thread for each paintalong. They do get bloated and it's hard to find the paintings from a particular date. So I'm starting this one, even though....

There are a few pages of posts for this paintalong posted in the thread titled "Live Paint Along Classes Discussion Thread," around post #410. You can see some students' work and J's finished painting there.

For additional comments or posts of painting, post here. (If a moderator sees this post, feel free to move those posts over to this thread.)

A soaking wet "hello" from Beryl drenched Jacksonville, Fl.!

Here is the pan pastel I did during the paint along. I don't know how you get the thin edges with the tools but I saw you do it yet couldn't duplicate! Found some pastel pencils and used those very slightly.
I'm just proud that I made it through the whole day and kept up as much as I did.
Thanks again for a great learning experience!

So many great results with pan pastels--even more impressive since they are so new to the market, no one has had a large number of months, let alone years to work with them! It appears Johannes is unleashing a lot of ability through these paintalongs.

I can't paint along on Sundays, but I bought the paintalong package at Northlight and downloaded the bridge lesson from last week. Can't wait to get started. Do you get an email when each lesson becomes ready to download? I am anxious to finally be unleashed, too! :)

Randi I sure know what you mean by rain drenched. here in St marys it is still raining here this morning and i see you are still getting rained on too. we had a tree blow over on the house next door. Tropical storm (hurrican what 4 mph) Beryl has not left yet. stay safe. and anyone else around here.

Johannes's final painting, "Sedona Beauties," slightly revised from the picture two posts up from here.

(He noticed some negative triangle shapes between some of the white trees, so revised those shapes. Also it looks to me like he reduced the size of the lowest white area in the water, in the NFZ).

Thanks! That program actually worked on my cranky old computer! I tried two other zip programs that didn't help before I finally posted at wetcanvas. I now have Johannes, voice and image, on pause so I can take a minute to thank you.

I started reading through the previous paintalong thread to see if this problem might had been covered in it. I think you saved me at least 10 or more pages of reading, plus I almost feel like I know you after all I read! ;)

Johannes, I am confused. First you posted your painting (post #16 above), then you revised it (post #18 above). In that revision, you changed some of the negative triangles between the white trees, and also removed some of the white foam near the bottom. But then in the ones AFTER that, the triangles and the white foam are back. Was the first "revision" just in Photoshop, not really in the painting itself?

Thank you for posting them as you do them. It is interesting to observe.

Yes, Sherry for the time being I did those changes in photoshop to get it in right away so others would not copy my mistakes. In general it is a good idea to fiddle in photoshop and once you are pleased then apply those final changes in the original. I just haven't gotten to the later stage yet. It is still important to know where and why to make those subtle improvements. I am all for technology. I suggest you all do the same thing. You will also learn a lot by making changes to see if you can improve things. I also think it is good that they see these subtle improvements as I post them as time goes by. Whatever it takes to get to the final result. Then you implement those final changes once you have made all those decisions. I have not had time to sit down and actually work on the original pastel. Do you remember the event last summer when my dog was lost for 12 days? Well during that period she had no injuries. But guess what. In my back yard which is only the size of a lot most homes have in cities, she tore her ligament wnd needed surgery? Can you believe that? It is like someone paragliding and nothing happens to him only to end up breaking his neck in the bath tub.

Just like Sherry I can't see any difference in the three images. My guess is that you haven't changed the name between the versions and even though you upload different versions the Wetcanvas application read the same name and shows the same image. This is a phenomena in the application Pages I use a lot. I have to be certain that the names aren't the same otherwise it will show one image several time instead of several different images.

I am so sorry about your dog. I hope she will soon be well and running around. Yes, it's amazing the things we survive only to succumb to the little glitches in our "safe" home environment! We do love our canine companions. And of course, I am sure that your experience in Jackson Hole just endeared her to all of you even more tightly.

Thanks for the explanation and encouragement. I remember when I was first posting something for your critique on Wet Canvas in Jan 2011, an adobe wall with an old wooden door in it partially open, some shadows on the wall... and you suggested putting bougainvillea on the wall top, then having the evergreens behind the open door grow taller than the wall. I tried things out in Photoshop to see if I was getting what you were suggesting. Very helpful. A great tool. AND "undo" is so wonderful - which we do NOT have for our paintings!

BTW, when I was playing with Photoshop to try out bougainvillea - what color to use, how much I should add, etc, I just decided to have some fun. Do you remember this one?

Johannes, your remark is quite kind, given how horrible this is. I did it as a joke. First I photoshopped just a few flowers, then added a few more, then just went crazy and photoshopped them invading the place, like kudzu or worse. The painting itself is quite different. I won't post it as this is the site for our paintalong. (Your remarks about trying things out with photoshop reminded me of this series. I was just demonstrating what can be done - it's not ALL good!) :wink2:

thanks for the link. Those paintings are an inspiration!

You suggested bougainvillea, others helped with what they looked like. You posted one of your own; I photoshopped. I tried boug growing on THIS side of the wall and liked it. THEN I made changes in the painting. You suggested extending the trees, I tried it in photoshop, you liked it, I changed the painting, etc. etc.

Here is my May 27th pastel. I could not get the pastels to mix real well and I only had 20 set of mediums. It looks a little blurry. I did have a cheap set of hard sticks and also this is pastel paper by strathmore in a pad I bought at local Michael's. I believe pastels will be good after getting use to them. I found the little sponges difficult to clean. After washing them with dish-washing liquid I went online to find a better way and the site said to use alcohol.

Excellent handling of greens. His missions scene are his forte. Personally I prefer not to go so dark in my own paintings when it comes to landscape shapes tough.

Understatement.

Clyde Aspevig...Scott Christensen...Jim Wilcox...in this century; Sorolla and Sargeant before...sigh!

I am gradually doing the bridge paint-along this week. In it, you said to look at Mian Situ's work so I put the recording on pause, went to his site, and checked out his building textures. Then I tried putting in a "Mian Situ" style bridge. I didn't quite pull it off (OK, that's also an understatement), but I had a lot of fun trying my hand at it.

I love the paint-alongs! It helps to try out new ways of doing things that would have taken me a long time to "invent" on my own. Thanks! I'm nowhere near to where I want to be with the final picture, but I feel I'm now on a path and progressing far more than I could have before.

9 X 12 Canvas board, Water Mixable Oil

Finally I painted something. Last Sunday I was in the paintathon. Although I have all Johannes recorded classes I have not had the time to paint. So this is my first attempt. With all that is wrong with it, I am pleased...........all comments appreciated........Dorian

Thanks Stu for looking and commenting. I hoped you would see it so you would know I am trying.........:cat: Dorian
I have order a set of pan pastels they should be here by Tuesday. I hope I will be able to paint tomorrow with my oils even though it is a water color class.

Dor, that's a knock out painting! Did you use PanPastel to do it? I like the glowing color and if you got it with PanPastel, I think I need to try again on white paper instead of the tinted because your colors really 'pop'! I hope you'll post more of your paintings. You've done a magnificent job!

Finally finished a paint along - although, now I can see that more tweaking needs to be done in the 'white' trees and the snaky line of the bank to the right.

I love the vibrant colours here Dor - your painting is really stimulating. I have some water mixable oils, but have never used them. Maybe I'll give them a go after seeing how beautiful they can be.

This has been sitting in the computer and not being posted because I hate the washed out colors in the photo.

I realize that there are many other thing that can be wrong and that not being open to other possibilities will not help me improve. So any advice is gratefully accepted even if it's "Get a new camera!". :wink2:

Johannes - is the part where you paint the cliffs to the left lost? I can't find it in the recordings.

Are you talking about the tall rocky cliffs in the background left? Those are mainly on part 1 (with a few touchups later). The rocky stream edge in the foreground left is in the middle of part 4. Do you have the complete downloads? Part 1 should be about 421 MB and part 4 should be about 562 MB.

Hi Sherry! Love your name, the dry version ;)
Yes, I have the complete downloads and I mean the rocks (cliff s to a grand word) in the foreground to the left. I can't find that Joe is painting them on the videos. On part 4 they are already painted and on on part 3 they are not.

My apologies, Rosemarie, for me they are in the middle of part 3. (Part 3 should be 452 MB.) Part 3 starts with the top two-thirds of the painting mostly done, the high cliffs, the light trees, the far shore with trees on right. The shoreline between water and left rocks is just drawn. After some twiddling, he does the water, then not quite half-way thru he starts the left rocks.

Thanks, my version is only 203 Mb and the last 5 seconds shows the start of the rocks. I will download part 3 again when June 30 downloads are finished. They are huge and part 1 took 7 hours. I wish I could get a faster Internet connection but that isn't possible if I don't move.

Joe, we are talking about 5/27, "Sedona Beauties" in pastel. That one is much shorter than the current ones. I think you might be talking about 6/30.
