A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Photography Portfolio
Project Leader: drapier
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Photograph
Medium: Other
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Building Your Photography Portfolio

From time to time we all must submit our photography portfolio to prospective clients. If you don't already have a photography portfolio, this project will help you develop one. Or, if you do already have one, it will help improve the one you have.

Because this project is starting in the middle of the year, please start your portfolio with five images that you feel are your very best work. The comments section of each entry will serve as a means to discuss each image and help each participant build a strong portfolio.

At the end of each month, please add only one new image. By the end of the year you will have 12 images with comments about each one that will help you decide which to include in your prospective client portfolio.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=454)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

It is going to take me some time to decide on this. I can't even decide if I should make my portfolio cohesive as I have several photos I really like but I do not think they gel very well together for a portfolio.
I don't wan't to use my yellow cab collection as that's too narrow.
Questions Questions.........

SunnyJon

Mike-I didn't sign up yet but I think this would make an excellent discussion topic.
#1. I too have some best non-cohesive statement shots! I have my abstract work in which I believe I excell but I think I also have some extraordinary nature shots so? If a gallery carries both?

#2. How many images make a best presentation portfolio without going overboard? Maybe one should have an extra one in case prospective galleries or clients can opt to see more images.

#3. I'm also a sculptor & some galleries deal in 2D & 3D -should I present one first? If so which one? Or maybe a combined portfolio? Or maybe I should appear to be single-minded about one. Most artists I know are multi-talented sooo....
I have a million questions, because I was taught one way to present a portfolio but seems galleries have an altogether different perspective on them & sometimes different with every one!

Oh yeah & I'm curious what type of portfolio & case folks use.
I use Itoya art portfolios-archival safe & PVC free, and a canvas bag 20" x 25" with shoulder strap.

I'll sign up for sure- this sounds like a great project since I don't have a portfolio of photos of any sort.

More questions for people... what size photos do you use in your potrfolio? 4"x6", 5"x7", 8"x10" something bigger?? How often do you higrade and change images?

SunnyJon
06-10-2003, 11:50 PM
I use 8 x 10s> Most galleries want to see that size because they want to see the details and how well the prints look at a larger size. That is the ones that don't want to see slides of photos! I think that is a little redundant but who am I to say?

Now here's something I can sink my teeth into. Great idea.

I've got a portfolio that I put together this year on my "fine" art. I use the same type portfolio that Sunny uses and I carry it in a large black leather flat purse that is 14 x 20, two compartments and a zipper pocket in the center. It works for me.

I use 8x10 size on my larger paintings and 5x7 (two to the page) for smaller works. The first page is my "Artist's Statement". On the page opposite each picture I put a description of the work. Title; medium; ground; size (unframed and framed).

I also keep a binder with plastic sheet protectors where I put the first print of each card that I produce; two to a page. I developed an order sheet with identifying numbers and ordering information for each card in the binder. This also fits into my "purse".

I have been thinking of doing the same for some of my photographic images and this will be a very helpful project. I already have some images that I want to use but will be developing more this year.

Thanks for this project.

I have decided to put together a portrait portfolio as it has begun to interest me just lately and I think it might be a good way to push myself.
To be honest I only have two portraits that are up to the standard of a portfolio but it'll be a good start

And I know my favorite of yours! :D

So, Mike and SJ, why not do more than one portfolio....for different 'target audiences'? Mike, I don't think it would be a mistake for you to do a portfolio just of your cab work....that is a true and creative project. Or even make it a tad more generalized.....like New York traffic.....and then do a separate one for your portrait work?

Just a thought.....

Obviously, I don't have to decide which genre to use...I only *DO* portrait photography!

I put in five...tough decisions! I didn't go back into my pre-digital pictures, maybe I should have?

In real life I think I will make a general portfolio, but also an animal photos one (domestic and wildlife)

Another question...how many photos do you include total in your portfolio?

Shots like this are difficult for me. You did a wonderful job catching the dew drops among all that great texture and color. How far away from the flower were you? I wear tri-focals, and my eyes get confused on closeups.

I really have a thing for lines. I see them everywhere, and can not stop staring. It is like they mesmerize me. This shot of the light from the blinds on this hat is a great composition. I am such a beginner, but I hope to hone my skills with the camera.

The idea is to but in five initially and then add one a month till years end so you should have twelve images at years end.

This is a familar site. The early morning sun through you window lighted this beauty perfectly. The reflexion of light off the taunt skin, and the light freckling of yellow around the crown running towards the back is nice subtle contrast that gives the tomato life even off the vine.

Thanks Sassy for all your comments! I don't know how much of a photography brain I have to pick...lol....still learning myself! Digital has enabled me WAY more practice than film ever did!!

Sassy with the iris shot I was maybe an inch or two from the flower. I can get as close as about a half inch from something if the lighting is right and the camera will focus! I could never get this shot with my Olympus. The Nikon's macro abilities are still amazing me every time I use it!

I want to reshoot the hat shot, as I only have it stored as a mid-sized image (shot in my early digital days when i was resizing everything to save space). Shouldn't be too hard to re-shoot it, since I have the same blinds and window :D.

Thanks again! I look forward to seeing what everyone submits for this project- should be awesome with all the talent in this forum!!

Then I spent the next several hours going through all my digi photos. Whew! I haven't a clue what to include. Wildlife, architecture, flowers, flower macros, trees, sunsets, IRs, Holy Moly--I got tired just looking through them all.

I did write some numbers/titles down and will consider them. I just don't know that I think I have ANY that are worth putting in a portfolio. Maybe it's just me this week. I haven't been the most "up" person the last several weeks. Things have been a bit difficult, as some of you know.

Anyway, I did sign up. That's a good thing. I did look through my photos. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to tackle actually submitting some pics.

I have some similar questions to ones others have asked. Do I just have one portfolio with 12 completely different, eclectic photos? Or do I do one with some kind of cohesive qualities? But then that leaves so much out since my interests are many any varied. My plans lately have been to get into some industrial photos. They've just finished a Metrolink train through my neighborhood to downtown, and it was wonderful and exciting to see it actually up and running -- lights, bells and whistles. I want to photograph it. Plus we have an old (still working) power station in Pasadena that I always check out when I'm in that neighborhood. It's huge and marvelous and I've been wanting to do photos of it for years. My idea is to ask for permission to enter the grounds and do it--just haven't got my nerve up yet.

The way I see it, I might need ten different photo portfolios.....:D OMG! and double

Well getting started with maybe just one idea might be a good thing. I'll settle on one idea and then follow through. Or does that sound too boring. An entire year of flower macros? Oy vey!

Anyway, whatever....... great idea Mike and thanks for starting this project. I'm sure to learn something from it. Just have to do the legwork and the rest should take care of itself.

I signed up. I tend to take pictures of two main subjects: flowers and pathways, although I don't really plan it that way, it just happens. I think I will focus on the pathways for this project, but work on a second flower portfolio at the same time. I am excited about getting started. I have felt the need for a little push to be more focused (excuse the pun) lately.

Sassy, I'm curious about where you shot this from (hard for me to tell with the cropping). Wind surfing, etc., is huge here in Alameda, but I know they do quite a bit over by Crissy Field and down near Candlestick...and I think I've seen them over near Berkeley.

Is it too late for me to tune in on this? I am still learning my way around here, but I think I could manage it. How many images do I need to submit right away? (That might take me a few days!)

Are they all strictly photographs or can they be manipulations too?

I need the discipline of a project to keep me moving...it sounds great.

I am still not clear on uploading. I know I can upload 500x600 pixels. Do I drop the resolution to 72 or keep it at 300. (I will get better at this..)

Lea :

I wouldn't think its too late to tune in on this - I only uploaded my photos yesterday, so I think you've got time :)

As for photographs or manipulations? I've got both - and no-one's complained yet :)

All of my images have a maximum width of 500px - and the height is generally around 600px - if I have one in portrait format. As for pixels - I'm protective of my images - so I have them at 72dpi.

Hope this helps :)

I did get 5 picture posted. I ended up using a mixed group instead of focusing on "Pathways". I had 8x10 's made from the photos I chose, except for the black and white rose which would not process correctly through the kiosk. I got so frustrated that I broke down and bought a photo printer today. I have had a bad year with printers (gone through 3 already, not to mention all the ink), so it took a lot to convince me to try another.

Would it be acceptable as part of the project to post pictures in the "progress" area that we are thinking of including but are not sure of?

Thanks for the great comments guys. I'm currently a student at MTSU in Tennessee. I took a B&W photograpy class a while back and i've been hooked ever since. The Haircut shot is one of 2 shots, I haven't decided if i'll post the second of not.

I'm a litte confused about how posting and projects work. Do I have join a project to post? Or do I just upload them and post them?

I will say this, I'm having such a tough time choosing. I've got 3 up so far, they are favorites of mine but old. I feel like you've all seen them, most of you more than once. In fact some of you have postcards of them from postcard project IV.

My question is this: after we get our five entered, do we enter a 6th for June and should it be one we've done in June?

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered already. I've been indisposed for awhile, but I do think I read the entire thread. May have missed a post here or there, though.

Hi folks,

I've managed to get two photos uploaded, these are some of my images using our Fujifilm Finepix 2800 zoom Digital camera, using the auto settings and flower settings.

My next set is where I'm in control of the settings, I'll upload them later. It looks like I've set my portfolio subject on flowers

Thanks, Zyf. He was born in Los Angeles (L.A.Zoo), first ever to be delivered by Caesarian and by a "people" doctor, hence his name "Caesar." He was too socialized to people in his first five years or so, therefore he didn't relate well to the other gorillas. No aggression or anything, just not interested. He's 26 years old this year and has never successfully mated. They kept him alone in his own exhibit, but there was another lowland family (rather large) with a patriarch right next door. They sent that family all off to the Boulder Zoo, and sent Caesar all alone to Atlanta. The only thing I can hope is that he'll get "lonely" enough to get interested in a female and live a "normal" gorilla life (as normal as life can be living on exhibit in a zoo.)

When I was in the L.A. Zoo docent program, I used to visit him almost every day. He came to know my voice, and if he was "hiding" in his cave, when I came and called, he'd come out, to the delight of other onlookers. I just fell in love with him--how could you help it--what's not to love? :D

Eilene~Talk about a small world. I thought the handsome guy in your pic looked familiar! I lived in Glendale, CA all my life until last May. I was a student volunteer at the zoo in the late 1980's, then a docent for a couple of years. My mother, step-father, and grandmother were all docents for several years in the 1990's. I used to go talk to Ceasar too, he seemed to invite human conversation sitting there all alone.

Yours is a perfect picture of my old friend Ceasar:)

AriadneArts
06-29-2003, 05:43 PM
Thanks for the nice comment, Vega. How neat to meet another friend of Caesar's! If I hear anything about how he's doing in Atlanta, I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks.

The L.A.Zoo is undergoing a vast change. Many of the animals have been removed, either temporarily or permanently, because of the disruption and noise of the construction. They have taken out the aviary--talk is they're not replacing it. (What a shame.) They're building a brand new gorilla exhibit, but none of our gorillas are due to come back (so far). And theyre doing a bunch of other things--huge changes. A new multi-story reptile house is in the offing too, somewhere down the line. I feel that is sorely needed. The present one is very unsatisfactory in many ways. A decent gorilla environment is needed also, but I'm sad that none of "our" gorillas are set to return to it, especially Caesar. Oh well........

It was incredible. I think I like Yosimite better than Yellowstone, or any other national park, and I have been to most of them. Yosimite has a feel about it like no other place. There are some really wonderful photos in the gallery...after I've played with Simon (who's sitting next to me howling for his mommy-and-me time), I'll come back through with more comments. (I was on a good roll for a bit, but Simon jumped on the desk and managed to hit just the right combo of keys to prematurely post my comment string...)

I took this one to the photography club meeting tonight. It was only my second meeting and first time to enter any photo competition. I won 3rd place! I am excited. There are some amazing photographers in the club. When they began showing the honorable mentions they were gorgeous, and I thought "oh well at least I tried, no way I beat those", then when they announced I had 3rd place I squealed. I took my 6 year old and he yelled "allright Mom!".

I don't know what it is about this shot that I like, whether it's the textures or the composition. There's something almost Japanes about it... probably because of the leaves at the bottom. I do like it very much though!

I like this shot very much, but I do feel that it would benefit from some 'spotting' particularly to get rid of the hair(?) near the centre. Maybe even a little touch of sharpening. That aside, it's a great composition.

They were very welcoming. All of the entries are anonymous until after the judging which helps prevent favoritism. The first place winner (who's photo was awesome) has not been a member very long either.

I added more shots to my portfolio. I tried to make it reflect what is actually in my printed portfolio that I have been showing in person. My presentation folder has 24 pages (up to 48 images) so I need to add more than 12 or it will look unfinished. I am shooting for 24 with my aritst's statement in the clear pocket in the cover and my resume in a separate folder.

"Fire","Firefly" ,"A Rose of Any Color","Beauty Needs No Color" have all gone into a gallery with the latter two already selling:)

Although I have received good feedback on the more scenic shots, I don't think they have enough personality. So I am focusing on developing the style in the floral shots more, but not just with flowers

Boy, I checked back in the project forum at the right time, just set up a portfolio less than a week ago and would love to have some input.

My portfolio consists of slides exclusively (so far) and so I'm going to be posting all my images without cropping, and only a little sharpening to counter the scanner fuzziness. My idea is that you guys should be commenting on what is actually in my portfolio as opposed to what I see iin it. (If anyone is curious enough to ask I'll post what I see in the progress section)

Take a look and tell me what you really think, I'd appreciate the feedback, tips, or suggstions!

Flehmen

G'day Drapier,

Well, first off, two excellent portraits. Both show you can do studio work and capture something about a person. The one problem I do have with them is the fact that they are both in your portfolio. The poses are very similar. Unless you make sure you seperate them with something else. (Kinda like your mirror shot.) Your clients might look at that and see a lack of inovation. Obvioiusly not the case when we look at your stuff, we know. But your clients might only want to look at the first few shots to decide if they want to look farther. I've been doing a little reading on portfolios "that sell".

Also, doesn't the project creator have to continue adding pictures 'til the project is done? ;)

Take care,
Flehmen

This is lovely - the lighting, the subject, the composition - a painterly quality to it.

love the subject and the composition. I'd be tempted to try keeping the jay in colour (or toned down colour) while leaving the rest b&w, as it has a slight tendency to get lost in the greys. But that may just be my monitor. Anyway, neat picture.

I love all your pictures here, Alan, but this one really does it for me - the subject, the setting, the composition (wonderful strong directional lines), the colours, the delicacy of the wildflowers in the foreground - it's wonderful.

hahaha me too Maria. Thanks for reminding me about another commitment I haven't fullfilled. Maybe I'll leave the sickies to themselves and go out and play. But then again it's probably gonna be 100+ again today so maybe not. I think I'll just go look at everyone else's work.

I noticed after I had uploaded this image that it wasn't very clear. Can someone tell me how to remove it from my portfolio so I can upload a better shot?

Hi folks,

I haven't forgotten about the project, I'm waiting for the new computer to download my images from the camera, this computer seems to like disrupting my down loading even ruining some images, hoping the new computer will be here soon. I've a lot of work to do sorting my photos into categories :( I've plenty of CD burning to get done as well

gorgeous, Alan - I love that kind of reflection. And the whole picture is so strong and peaceful - I love the "old bronze" colour of the land, and the bright pure blue of the sky.
