Awesome for a first or not! If you wanted to get the flower more in focus , try a larger F stop. That was a Geck hint to me on macros. She said try F11 but I only have a 9.5 & it worked.
Anyway I thought you did great!  :D

i'm really not sure that the camera will allow me to change the f-stop - since it pretty much controls everything else I do..

I'd eventually like to either upgrade to a better digital, or i've got my eye on a macro lens that does up to 5x lifesize - but the only drawback to that is the fact that i don't have a dslr - so i wouldn't be able to use it freely - and its fully manual focus ;)

Looks like he's stuck in there! Quick! Grab a coolpix!!!

I *think* I know the macro you're talking about...lol... what a weirdo lens, huh! MP-E 65mm? I would love to try it though. In the meantime, I inverted an old 50mm onto the *new* 50mm I got with the Canon, and it works pretty well! I do want a real macro, like the MP-E65 (http://www.photo.net/photo/canon/mp-e-65/) or a close-up filter, like the 500D though.

yup, thats the lens... goes for about $800 at B+H Photo.

but for that price, i'd consider scrapping the coolpix and getting a dslr body and the lens....

as for the ant being stuck? nope it was just feeding on the nectar in the flower :)

yeah, that's a lot of cash for a lens! I just watched one on eBay that was mint... It went for *only* $620.00.

These are are really good macros, you did a great job with limited equipment.

Neat shots and the flowers themselves look great too. Ant's are not exactly the easiest choice for your first insect macros. I've been trying for ages without any success.
