Title: Bruce W. Gilbert - Arts Administrator
Year Created: 2012
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas

MY COMMENTS:
Previously I have aimed for a more realistic photographic effect. In this portrait I have tried to loosten up, making only one brush stroke wherever possible and not reworking them.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I would appreciate any comments or criticisms you may have.

Great work. Background and subject resemble a lot and I like it. Will do well at exhibition. A point of critisim: the hair on the right side (to us) looks a bit like tubes instead of hair in my opinion. Hope you see what I mean.
But again: it has become a portrait of a high standard.

Nice job but I suggest it's not Bruce Gilbert but is rather Bill Nighy

Wonderful portrait, unique style - in both color and texture. I agree with the other crits that white under the mouth is off - unless it is a snippet of beard. And the hair on right is tube-like.Less dark shadows and more volume could fix it.

I absolutely love the background, the gold/orange line holds the painting, without being distracting, and the patterns on left I could look at forever, plus you have added a lot of these colors in his face, to make it all work well together.

I like this style very much. Agree about some of the white splotching being off.

Here's a similar image to the portrait. His nose does seem narrower in photographs. Too much nostril.

Thanks very much to those who have taken the time to comment and provide feedback.

I think perhaps there might be a little confusion about who My Bruce Gilbert is. Mine was born in South Africa and now lives and works in Western Australia.

Here is a photo of Bruce in my studio just before the completion of the painting.
