Hi.
These photos are taken at a local small Rodeo we have here once a year. It's at a place called Rules Beach.
There is no digital manipulation with any of these photos. they are just as they are out of the camera.
I used a Canon EOS 5 Camera with a 28-105mm lens.
When I take photos of action events I always try to depict the movement into the photo.
I can't remember what shutter speed I used but it was slow. I panned along with the action & took the photo while the bull & rider passed me. I was very close to the action so I had to be very cautious.
When Panning I alway pivot at the waist not the upper body. Always keep you upper body still & just pan at the waist. It does take some practice to perfect, but is well worth the effort.

Excellent! You certainly caught the action with these two shots Phillip. What's with the helmets. It about 7 years since I was last at a rodeo down in Tamworth NSW. but I can't remember anyone having a helmet. It definitely makes sense though but I was wondering whether this is law or personal choice.
Great work with the panning.

These are some of the best action photographs I've seen for many a day, Philip. Extremely well done. That is also some excellent advice re panning.

Great shots Phillip. They certainly convey action. Really like that top shot, very nicely capture, including the expression on his face. That wrist looks just a little painful.
I certainly wouldn't want to be that bloke on the bottom photo, did he get stomped?
This has got to be one of the toughest sports around.

Thanks for the great comments.
I think I might have to post more here.
Your spot on there wintherstudios, These guys are just your average cattle farmer. I think the prize money is only about $200.00 if they come first. Most don't even wear a helmet. Intact I usually try to capture the guys with no helmets. but these are the best I got on the day.
We have around 6 or so Rodeo events locally per year. Were I live is mainly Cane farms & Cattle property. One of the last Rodeo's we had here the world champion competed in it. I think his name was Troy Dann. Not sure If I spelled his last name correctly.
Unfortunately a 19 year old Lad, died at out last Rodeo. I was not there. but He got crushed by the bull & died 5 minutes later. It's so sad.
Some of the bulls we have here must weigh a ton. There just small bulls above.
