I stopped in St Ignace & grabbed a couple shots of this replica Longhouse of the Huron Indians. The outside is covered in slabs of bark similar to shingles in their overlapping. The Huron were settled agricultural people unlike the migratory ojibwa. They buil tthese permanent structure that were 20' wide by 20' tall and could be 40-120' long. Unlike some tribes these were family dwellings as opposed to men dwellings.woven mats covered the floor & skins were used as door coverings. The longhouse ran north to south to prevent the severe east wind off the Lake from the blowing in the doors.

Thanks, Sunny. I like that last photo best - shows some more sophisticated engineering than most people would suspect, assuming this is 100% authentic. :)

It's outside the Ojibway Museum and I think they are trying to stick to authenticity other than the padlocked doorway! You're welcome-thanks for peeking.:D

Sunny, this looks identical to the Oneida long houses. Wonder if the tribes were at one time combined? I'm no expert, obviously, but the structures are exactly the same. Very interesting. I'll have to go out to the Oneida Museum one of these days again and ask about that.

What an interesting structure. Photographically I love the 3rd image but they are of of interest as the other show more detail of the construction. I've also been educated as I thought the only permanent indian settlements were much further south. Show how little I know of American history.
We have an archaeological site which is said to have been a great wooden hall dating from the Neolithic. (See Here) (http://www.britarch.ac.uk/ba/ba64/feat3.shtml) . Your photos are just how I imagine it may have looked.
